Application December 2, 1931, Serial No. 578,546 Renewed May 5, 1934 Claims. (01. 126-494) 5 to have the door hinged in such a manner that the door will be substantially flush with the wall or door frame of such range. If this enamel finish of the outer wall of the door comes into direct contact with the door frame during the opening and closing movements of the door there is a likelihood that it may become injured.
It is therefore the object of this invention to devise a novel and simplified construction of a concealed hinge mechanism for the oven and fire doors of gas and coal ranges which will provide for a full opening of the door, prevent the enameled finish from coming into contact with the front wall of the range during the opening movement of such door, and also to provide a construction which can be readily assembled.
With the above and other objects in view, as will hereinafter appear, my invention comprehends novel concealed hinge mechanism for range doors.
It further comprehends a novel hinge mechanism for range doors wherein the Wall or plate of the range is constructed in a novel manner, and which, with the lining of the oven, for example, provides a pocket to facilitate the ready assembly and removal of the hinge pin, and which also cooperates with the door in such a manner that the enamel surface will not come into contact with the wall of the range during its opening movement.
It further comprehends a novel concealed hinge mechanism for range doors wherein provision is made for the ready insertion of a wrench in order to tighten the nuts which retain the hinge pins in assembled condition.
Other novel features of construction and advantage will hereinafter more clearly appear in the detailed description and the appended claims.
For the purpose of illustrating the invention, I have shown in the accompanying drawing a typical embodiment of it, which, in practice, will give satisfactory and reliable results. It is, however, to be understood that the various instrumentalities of which my invention consists can be variously arranged and organized and my invention is not limited to the exact arrangement I and organization of these instrumentalities as herein set forth.
Figure 1 is a front elevation of a conventional range in conjunction with which concealed hinge mechanism embodying my invention is employed.
Figure 2 is a sectional view showing the door in its extreme open position, vand showing in more detail the construction of the wall or frame of the range and the manner inwhich the door is hinged. 4
Figure 3 is a sectional plan View of a portion of the range, the section being taken in proximity to the hinge pin.

Referring to the dr'awing':-
1 designates'the right end wall orplate of a conventional range, and 2 designates the front plate or wall which forms the door frame. The wall 2 is provided with a rearwardly extending flange 3 to overhang the flanged end of the right end wall 1, and this front wall'2, at its front portion, is deflected rearwardly as at 4, then laterally as at 5, then outwardly as at 6 to form avertically disposed recess '7. The front wall then extends laterally as at 8 and has its free end por- 'tion deflected inwardly as at 9 where, for example, an oven opening is formed, and the laterally extending portion 8 is apertured at 10 for a purpose which will hereinafter clearly appear.
The front wall 2 is provided with a rearwardly extending flange 11. The oven wall or plate 12 has a portion thereof outwardly deflected as at 13 which overhangs the flange 11 and contributes to form a pocket 14 which is open as at 15.
16 designates the door which is provided with a hinge support 17 which is apertured as at 18 to receive the end of an L shaped hinge pin 19, which latter extends through an aperture 20 in the wall 6 and is provided with a nut 21 in threaded engagement with the shank of the hinge pin and bearing against the rear face of the wall 6.
The door may be of any desired or conventional construction and may be made up of one or more parts. As illustrated, it is provided with an inwardly extending flange 22 which, during the opening movement of the door 16, will contact with the hinge pin 19 and thus prevent the enameled outer face of the door contacting with the front wall which it would do if it were not for this construction.
It will, of course, be understood that a hinge construction is provided in spaced relationship at the upper and lower portions of the door.
It will now be apparent with the door mounted on the hinge pins, the shank of the hinge pins can be inserted through the apertures 20 and the nut 21 can be tightened by the insertion of a socket wrench into the pocket 14 which is made large enough for this purpose.
In case the door is a fire door then the apertures 10 are provided, in order to provide suflicient clearance for tightening the nut 21 by means of an S wrench. These apertures 10 are preferably in the form of slots.
It will be apparent that in accordance with my present invention I provide a recessjnto which the rear end of the door extends and the mounting for the hinge pins is such that the door, when closed, will be substantially flush with the front Wall'or door frame of the range. I also provide a pocket opening into the oven so that the hinge pin can be quickly and readily secured in position and also an aperture in case the door is to be a fire door, in order that the nuts of the hinge pins can be quickly and readily tightened.
My present invention provides a concealed hinge construction which will provide more than a opening of the door and the door contributes with the hinge pins to limit its opening movement so that the enameled face of the door will not be injured by contact with the door frame or wall of the range. 7,
It will now be apparent that I havedevised a new and useful concealed hinge mechanism for range doors which embodies the features of advantage enumerated as desirable in the statement of the invention and the above description, and while I have, in the present instance, shown and described a preferred embodiment thereof which will give in practice satisfactory and reliable results, it is to be understood that this embodiment is susceptible of modification in various particulars without departing from the spirit or scope;of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages.
Having thus described my invention What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. In a concealed hinge. mechanism for ranges, a front wall inwardly deflected to form a recess at one side of a door opening, a door to close said opening substantially flush, with said front wall, and spaced hinge pins "extending through a wall of said recess and concealed by said door, said hinge pins serving as stops to limit the extent of opening movement of the door.
2. In a concealedhinge mechanism for ranges, a front wall having an oven opening, and inwardly deflected at one side of said opening to form a recess, spaced hinge pins extending through awall of said recess, a door to close said opening, mounted on said hinge pins and concealing said hinge pins when closed, said door when closed being substantially flush with said front wall, nuts in threaded engagement with the inner ends of said hinge pins, and the wall of said oven in proximity to said nuts being inwardly deflected to provide clearance for the use of a wrench to tighten said nuts. 7
3. In a concealed hinge mechanism for ranges, a wall having a door opening, and a recess at one siderof said opening, hinge" pins extending through said wall and into said recess, a door mounted on said hinge pins and concealing them, and substantially flush with said wall when closed, and the opening closed by said door having one of its walls provided with pockets to provide access to secure them in position.
4. Ina concealed hinge mechanism for ranges, a wall having a door opening and inwardly de fiected at one side of such opening to form a recess, and provided with slots at one side of said recess hinge pins extending through said wall, a door mounted on said hinge pins, and substantially flush with said wall when closed, and nuts for said hinge pins accessible for adjustment by insertion of a working tool through said slots.
5. In a concealed hinged mechanism for ranges, a front wall deflected rearwardly, laterally and outwardly to 'form a recess at one side of a door opening, a door to close said opening and substantially flush with said front wall, 'and spaced hinged pins extending through a wall of said recess and carrying said door, said pins being completely concealed by said door and limiting its opening movement.
