Application May 1, 1934, Serial No. 723,390
3 Claims.
The invention relates to a ladder snubber and more especially to a ladder dog or hook.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character wherein the same when in use can be applied to any kind of a window sill so as to secure a ladder to prevent the same from skidding sideways or slipping out at the bottom and thus assuring safety in the use of the ladder.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character wherein a ladder can be snubbed from the outside of a building as easily as on the inside by standing on the ladder and the window sill or casing will not be damaged in the use of the ladder.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character which is simple in construction, thoroughly reliable and efficient in its purpose, strong, durable, readily and easily applied to and removed from the ladder, and inexpensive to manufacture.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described in detail, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, which dis closes the preferred embodiment of the invention, and pointed out in the claims hereunto appended.
In the accompanying drawing:
Figure 1 is a fragmentary vertical sectional view through a ladder showing the device applied thereto and constructed in accordance with the invention.
Figure 2 is a sectional view on the line 2r-2 of Figure 1 looking in the direction of the arrows.
Figure 3 is an enlarged perspective view of the device. Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views in the drawing.
Referring to the drawing in detail, A designates generally a portionof the wall of a building and B a window opening therein, while C is a portion of a ladder having the usual cross rungs 5 and being of standard construction. The device comprising the present invention includes a hook having the double bills 6, these being formed from side flanges 7 of a body 8, the flanges being bent at right angles and in spaced parallel relation to each other.
The body 8 of the hook terminates removed from the bills 6 and constitutes a connecting web between the flanges 7. Connected by pivots 9 is l the inner forked end 10 of a lever 11. The pivots 9 connect the lever 11 for swinging movement to the end of the hook remote from the bills 6, the side flanges 7 being formed with pivot ears 12 for the said pivots 9.
Carried medially of the forked end 10 of the lever 11 is an eye 13 to which is connected one end of a link chain 14, the other end being fitted with a hook 15 and this chain 14 is adapted to be passed around the rungs 5 of the ladder C and the hook 15 selectively engaged with any of the links of said chain 14 for the fastening of the latter about the rungs 5, while the double bills 6 are engaged with the wall A through the opening B, as shown in Figure 1 of the drawing, so that the ladder will be secure when placed in position against the wall A for use, without liability of the bottom of the ladder slipping or skidding sidewise.
Mounted on the body 8 is a pivoted latch 16, the same being acted upon by a spring 1'7 to have it engage with the lever 11 when swung inwardly against the body 8 and in this movement the chain 14 is pulled upon for the firm holding of the ladder when the chain 14 is engaged with the rung of the'same. The latch 16 can be manually released from the lever 11 and thereby free the same to slacken the chain and thus permit the release of the chain from the rungs 5 of the ladder C when it is to be removed from the place of use.
Engaged between the double bills 6 is a cross bar 18 on which is loosely engaged a chain length 19 carrying a screw 20 having the crosshead 21 and this screw is adapted to engage in a flat roof or a gable roof when the ladder reaches to the same, for service by painters, roofers or carpenters.
As has been indicated, the device functions to keep the ladder from slipping out at the bottom or from skidding sidewise and thus assuring safety and security during the use of the ladder, it being serviceable with any windowsillor window casing and can be used for fastening a line of fire hose in a window or over a roof, the ladder being snubbed from the outside of a building as easily as on the inside by standing upon the ladder. i
What is claimed is:
1. A device of the character described comprising a body having double bills at one end thereof, a lever pivotally supported on the body, a chain connected with the lever, a hook at the free end of the chain, and latching means carried by the body for engaging said lever.
2. A device of the character described comprising a body having double bills at one end a chain connected with the lever, a hook at the free end of the chain, latching means carried by the body for engaging said lever, another chain connected between the double bills, a screw carried by said other chain, and a spring latch carried by the body and detachably engaging said lever.
