J. CLAVIN WINDOW FASTENER OR THE LiKE Filed NOV. 1927 I IN VENTOR JA/Vfj f. CZAV/N ATT RNEY Patented" May 7, 1929.
siren STATES PATENT OFFECE.
JAMES E. cLAvIrr, or PROVIDENCE, Bironn ISLAND.
I WINDOW FASTENER on TI-IE LIKE.
Applicationfiled November 9, 1927. Serial No. 232,161.
' and is attached to only one of the window sashes, the fastener being capable of coacting with the window. frameto prevcnt the raising of the window sash by unauthor zed persons.
The device also comprises a catch means for holding the fastener member out ofengagement with the window frame when 1t is in the inoperative condition.
Other objects and advantages of my invention will be apparent from the detail description which follows.
I attain these objects and advantages by means of the device illustrated in the drawings wherein:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the window fastener showing it attached to a window sash and its position when in the operative position.
Figure 2 is a perspective view of the rear half of the window fastener showing it when in the inoperative position, there being a catch on the base member for holding the fastener member out of engagement with the window frame.
Figure 3 is a perspective View showing the fastener members disassembled whereby the spring and pivot is shown more clearly.
Referring to the drawings, 1 is the base having upright ears 2 and 3 at the sides thereof. The base'is provided with screw holes 4- through which pass screws for attaching the base to the top rail of the lower window sash in a position shown in Figure .1. The rear edge 5 of the base is rolled to form a hole. The rear edge is notched at its mid portion to receive the clip 6 which is provided with a rolled edge to conform with the rolled edge 5 and having its other end bent at right angles to serve as a catch. A pin 7 passes through the rolled edges of the ase and the clip whereby the two are hinged together.- The clip serves a purpose to be hereinafter described. The upright ears 2 and Sare provided with aligned openings through which a pin 8 passes, the pin 8 having a spring 9 'mounted thereon.
The upper or fastening member 10 is provided with angular edges 11 which taper towards the contacting end of the fastening member. The contacting end of the fastenmg member is bifurcated to provide'the fastening points 12 and 13, the intermediate space being suflicient to accommodate the sash cord without the latter interfering with the operation of the window fastener.-
-Openings 14 are provided in the widest portions of the angular edges whereby the fastening member may be pivoted on the pin 8, the spring 9 abutting against the tail piece '15 causing the fastening member to engage the window frame when in actual use. The edges are made angular in order to provide greater strength to the fastening member. It is well known that an angular member has greater compressive strength than a plane member of the same surface. It will be seen that when the fastening member 10 is pivotally mounted on the base member 1, that the tail piece 15 overhangs the rolled'edge 5 when the fastening member is raised upwardly, and this is the inoperative position since then the fastening points 12 and 13 are out of engagement with the window frame. When in this position by drawing over the clip 6, the tail piece is engaged and the fastening member is maintained in its upward position.
The position and arrangement of the window fastener may be carried out in actual practice as illustrated in order to use the same. However, if a lesser or greater angle is preferred it will be appreciated that this may be achieved by changing the position of the base member on the window sash and may be varied at will. The window fastener in place on the window sash in'such a fashion to provide an angular relation between. the fastening member and the upper rail of the window sash, the clip on the as tener being released, the window frame is engaged by the fastening points or prongs whereby the sash is securely held against being raised from within or without. in order to raise the sash, a slight manual operation. is suiiicient. By depressing the tail piece 15 and catching it with the clip 6' as shown in Figure 2 the fastening points are drawn away from the window frame and maintained in an inoperative position rendering it possible to raise or lower the window sash at will. By reason of the spring-ur ec means with which the window fastener is equipped it will be seen that automatic disengagen'ient oi the fastening points is rendered impossible.
All that has been said above in the description of my preferred embodiment is offered by Way of illustration and not limitation. I do not wish to be limited to the exact structure of the preferred embodiment shown and described, or to any par ticular material used in the construction oi parts, or to the design of parts, but desire protection as against any variations in structure which utilize the principle of my invention and tall within the purvlew of my invention and are within the spirit and scope of the following claim.
The invention having been set forth, what is claimed as new and useful is A Window fastenercom arising in combination an oblong base member, a fastening memberhaving a bifurcated end for en gagement with a window frame, said fastening member havin angular edges which taper towards the bifurcated end to form sharp angular prongs, said base member having upright ears, a pin passing through said ears and the angular edges of said fastening member to act pivot, sp means for urging said bifurcated end w th its angular prongs downwardly into. ongagement with said Window frame, said base member having means at one end thereo'l for holding said fastening member in an inoperative position, said means comprising a rolled edge on said base member, a notch in said rolled edge, a clip member having a rolled end adapted to be receivedwithin said notch, a pin passing through said rolled.
edges whereby the clip member is hingedly secured to said base member.
Signed at Fall tiver, 1n the county or Bristol, State of lvlassachusetts, this fifth day of November, 1927.
JAMES E. CLAVIN.
