9 Claims.
This invention relates to check protecting devices. It is particularly directed to a fountain pen having a cap provided with devices for mutilating portions of written papers to prevent forg- 'ing or alteration thereof.
An object of the invention is to provide a protective device of the character described which may be compactly incorporated into a fountain pen cap, the construction including means for protecting and housing the pen point of the fountain pen.
A further object of this invention is to provide in a protective device having a pair of spring arms adapted to be pressed toward each other, highly improved means within said arms for piercing or perforating a sheet inserted between said arms, the construction being easy to assemble and positive and smooth in operation.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a device of the character described which shall be neat and compact in construction, comparatively inexpensive to manufacture, easy to manipulate for positioning the perforated members at the portions of the paper to be perforated and yet practical and efficient to a high. degree in use.
Other objects of this invention will in part be obvious and in part hereinafter pointed out.
The invention accordingly consists in the features of construction, combinations of ele-' ments, and arrangement of parts which will be exemplified in the construction hereinafter described, and of which the scope of application will be indicated in the following claims.
In the accompany drawing, in which is shown one of the various possible illustrative embodiments of this invention,
Fig. 1 is a side elevational view of a fountain pen embodying the invention with parts broken away to show the interior construction;
Fig. 2 is an enlarged cross-sectional view of my improved fountain pen cap;
Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional view taken on line 3-3 of Fig. 2;
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the cap showing the same in position. for perforating a check;
Fig. 5 is a cross-sectional view taken on line 5--5 of Fi 4;
Fig. 6 is a cross-sectional view taken on line 6-6 of Fig. 5; and
Fig. '7 is a perspective view of one of the rollers and its frame.
Referring now in detail to the drawing, 10 designates a fountain pen embodying the invention comprising in general a barrel 11 to one end of which there is attached the usual pen point 12, and, a cap 13 screwed to the barrel in the usual manner, as hereinafter described; The barrel 11 may be of ordinary construction, and comprises the screw threaded portion 14 63 and a tapering or frusto-conical shaped portion 15 adjacent one end thereof. The cap 13 comprises a tubular member 13a having an open end 15a. Adjacent said open end, the member 13a is provided with an inwardly extending annular member 18 having internal screw threads adapted to cooperate with the threaded portion 14 for screwing the barrel 11 to said cap.
The tubular member 13a may be provided with a pair of diametrically disposed longitudinal 7 slots 19 and 20, terminating short of the flange portion 18 of said cap, as clearly shown in Fig. 2 of said drawing, to form two somewhatresilient arms 22 and 23 which may be pressed toward one another. v
Adjacent the outer end of each arm there is fixed a frame 24 comprising a pair of substantially semi-circular parallel portions 25 and 26, the peripheral edges of which contact the inner surface of said arm, and a-fiat portion 2'7 interconnecting said portions 25 and 26, and disposed flush with the edges formed at the slots 19 and 20. Each fiat wall portion 27 is provided with a preferably oblong shaped opening 28 for the purpose hereinafter appearing.
The frames 24 may be attached to said arms 22 and 23 by means of projections 29 extending from the wall portions 25 and 26 and passing through openings 29a formed in the cap for this purpose. The opposite walls 25 and 26 of each frame, are formed with a pair of aligned openings 30 and fixed within one pair of aligned openings is a shaft 31 on which is rotatably mounted a roller 31a having a plurality of parallel, spaced annular peripherally serrated portions forming sets of points or teeth 32, adapted to partially project through the opening 28 in one of the frames. Fixed in the other pair of aligned openings 30 is a shaft 33 on which there is rotatably mounted a roller 33ahaving parallel, spaced, thin circular plates or portions 34preferablydisposed between the serrated portions and projecting through the opening 28 in the other frame 24. Thus, should a paper be inserted within the slots 19, 20 and the two opposite sides or arms of the cap pressed together and the cap then moved along the paper, the teeth 32 will pierce or perforate the paper for protecting any written portions of said paper against forging or alterations, the circular por drical portion 17a crimped as at 17b into one of the grooves 50 for retaining the said mem=' ber in position. Extending inwardly from the ends of the cylindrical portion 17a of each;
inwardly bent portions 2r member 16 are likewise substantially flush with the wall 27 of one of the roller frames 24.
mounted Within the arms 22 and 23. The shaftsSl and 33 are first fixed within the frames 24 with the rollers rotatably mounted on said shafts' The frames are then inserted within the arms through the outer ends thereof and the lugs 29 inserted within the openings 29a and upset slightly to firmly rivet said frames to said'arms. The end members 16 are then applied for covering the outer ends of said arms; Obviously the roller assembly may be applied to any perforating or protecting device having a pair of spring arms which may be pressed toward each other, the invention not being limited only to-a tubular member or a cap for a fountain pen, pencil or the like instrument.
Means is provided for adjustably positioning the perforating rollers 31a, 33a from the edge of the check or paper to be perforated, whereby, as shown in Fig. 4 of the drawing, a check for example, may be inserted within the slots 19, 20 to any suitable distance from the edge of said check and the position of the rollers with respect to said edge maintained as'the cap is moved from left to right for perforating a line of writing on said check. To this end'th'ere is slidably mounted within said cap 13, a tubular member 35 having an end wall 36 provided with diametrically oppositely disposed portions 37extending through the slots 19 and 20, said portions 37 being provided with wings or ears 38 contacting the outer surface of the cap on opposite sides of said slots. Said tubular member 35 may be further provided with a shoulder portion 35a' adjacent the end wall portion thereof, adapted to guide said tubular member 35 I through the open end of the cap 13 and pre-- vent wabbling of said member. Said members 37 or shoulder 35a limit outward movement of said member 35. The tubular member '35, as shown on the drawing, is open at'the lower end thereof and adapted to receive the pen point 12 and the outer end of the barrel 11. Thus upon inserting the pen point portion of the barrel 11 within said tubular member 35, the outeredge 39 of said tubular member will contact the conical portion of the barrel, thus forming a chamberforhousing the pen point and sealing said chamber to prevent leakage or evaporation of the ink. Said tubular member 35 may be provided, however, with small openings 40 adjacent the 'end'fw'all 36 t'o permit air to enter said tubu lar 'n'iember, air obviously passing through the slots 19oz" z'orortms purpose. VVhfel'l' the barrel 11 is screwed to the cap 1 3, theedges 39 'willcontact the conical por not 1501 said barrel and prevent the endor It will thus" be seen that the perforating device may bereadily' erably there is suflicient friction between the members 37 and the edges of the cap at said slots19-aiid120'for retaining the tubular memher-=35 inany adjusted position to which same may bemoved. Although the cap is shown attached to a barrel of a fountain pen, it will be iih'clerstood that said cap may be also attached tea pencilhaving a tapered end, or any other su able instrument or may be used alone. A spiing"clip"45'-may be attached to the outer side of the cap to permit the same to be attached to a pocket;
It will-be understood that after the tubular member 35 has been moved to any desired ad- Justed position and a sheet inserted between the two arms and 23, pressure on said arms toward each other will cause the edges of said arms topress against the portions 37 extending through the slots 19' and 20 for maintaining the tubular member in said adjusted position while the sheet is being perforated.
It will thus be seen that there is provided a device in which the several objects of this invention are achieved, and which is Well adapted to meet the conditions of practical use.
As various possible embodiments might be of the above invention, and as various changes might be made in the embodiment above set forth, it is to be understood that all matter herein set forth, or shown in the accompanying drawing, is'to be interpreted asillustrative and not in a limiting sense.
Having thus described my invention, 1 claim as new and desire to secure'by Letters Patent:-
