Description

June 13, 1933.
F. c. DEL; Er AL PENCIL File'd Aug. 25, 1930 Patented .time 13, 1933 UNITED STATES PATENT oFFlcE 'FRANK o. DELI AND WILLIAM D. GRosEoLosE, or CHICAGO, ILLINoI's, AssIGNons rro' AUTOPOINI' COMPANY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION OF ILLINOIS PENCIL Application lezl August 25, 1930. Serial No. 477,624.
Our invention relates to pencils and more particularly to inechanical pencils.
It is conceded that there are innumerable methods and manners of constructing the common mechanical pencil, some of which are quite inefficient and the others serving to produce an inferior, troublesome construction. A further objection to the common form of mechanical pencil relates tothe tip thereof, which is generally formed of metal and contacts the lower end of the pencil barrel. In use it has been found undesirable to provide the entire tip of metal for the reason that the tip is thereby rendered quite slippery and frequently causes perspiration to form on the ngers if the pencil is used for any great length of time, thus making the use thereof somewhat unsatisfactory.
An object of our invention is to provide a moldedtip, the greater portion of which 4our invention;
Fig, 2 is a cross sectional view taken on the lines Q-Qof Fig. 1.;
Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional view taken on the lines 3-3 of Fig. 1, and
i Fig.'4 is a fragmentary longitudinal sec tional view of a modified form of tip construction.
By reference to Fig. 1 it will be seen that we have provided'a barrel 10 having an axial opening 11 therein, an eraser 12, and at the lower end thereof the reduced portion 13 having the shoulder 14. The tip comprises the lead tubeor guide 15 the lower `end of which is split at 16 to insure the retention of a lead. Near the lower end of the tube 15 we provide a circumferential groove for a purpose toV be later described. The upper end of said tube 15 is adapted to be received within the-aperture 11 of the barrel 10, and is provided with an internal thread 18 for co-operation with the threads 19 on the plunger 20 adapted to travel therethrough and to force a lcad \(not shown) out from the lower split end 16. At the lower end of the tube 15, We provide the tapered non-metallic molded portion 21, the lower end of which is adapted to be received within the groove thus providing an anchor therefor. ,The upper portion of said molded portion 21 is provided With' a socket 22 adapted to co-operate Withthe reduced end portion 13 of the barrel. The upper peripheral edge 23 of the molded portion 21 is adapted to contact the shoulder 14 on the barrel.
Thus it will be seen that we have provided a tip of two parts molded together. The provision of the groove 17 serves a double purpose; first, to serve as a limit for the molded portion, and second, to .anchor the same firmly tothe tube. Obviously the lack of the groove 17 would subject the otherwise very thin lower end of the molded portion to possible chipping or breaking off.
We have shown another form of our tip in Fig. 4 wherein the parts are substantially identical except for the tip which comprises the metal tip portion 24, the lead tube 25 centrally disposed therein, and the molded portion 26' serving to unit the tip and the lead tube. As shown the tip 24 is provided at its upper end with a crimped edge 27 serving as an anchor when the molded material is forced past it. The upper end of the molded portion 26 is suitably formed to interfit with the lower end of the pencil barrel and to contactthe shoulder thereon. If desired the Y lower end of the tip portion 24 may have the slit 28 to provide for expansion when the lead is forced therethrough'.
Obviously our construction is of the utmost simplicity and` economy of manufacture and provides a tip which is all that is desired in a Writing implement, as well as the advantage of the availability of various colors in the molded material if desired.
Obviously modifications and variations may be made the two forms disclosed, and
wedo not wish to be limited except as indicated in the appended claim.
We claim:
In combination, a cylindrical pencil body composed of non-metallic moldable material having an axial opening, the lower end of the body providing a reduced portion and a shoulder, a tapered portion also composed of non-metallic nioldable material and'having a socket adapted to receive the reduced end of the body, the upper end of the tapered portion lying against said shoulder, whereby the line of separation is at the junction of the cylindrical body with the tapered portion, a metal tube firmly anchored within said non-metallic moldable tapered portion 'and adapted to project into the axial opening in the body, and lead advancing mechanism cooperating with said tube and body.
In testimony whereof We have afixed our.
signatures.
FRANK C. DELI. WILLIAM D. GROSECLOSE.
