DRUM
Filed NOV. l1, 1953 Patented Nov. 13, 1934 DRUM Peter G. Peters, Bakersfield, Calif.
Application November 11, 1933, Serial No. 697,657
4 Claims.
This invention relates to the class of music and pertains particularly to a new and novel type of drum.
The primary object of the present invention is to provide a new and novel type of drum of a design which will enable one to conveniently carry it at and against the side of the body and which, in addition, may be made to produce sound effects different from those produced from drums of other types.
Another object of the invention is to provide a drum of such a design that a muiliing device may be readily inserted into the body thereof to alter the tonal qualities to suit various occasions.
The invention will be best understood from a consideration of the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing forming a part of the present invention,
with the understanding, however, that the invention is not confined to any strict conformity with the showing of the drawing but may be changed or modified so long as such changes or modifications mark no material departure from the salient features of the invention as expressed in the appended claims.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a View partly in side elevation and partly in longitudinal section, of the drum embodying the present invention.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged detailed sectional View through the edge of the head end of the drum.
Referring to the drawing in detail wherein like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views, the numeral 1 indicates the drum structure embodying the present invention, as a whole, the same being as shown of elongated design and centrally constricted as at 2, the constriction being located to one side of the transverse center of the body.
The longer portion of the body lying between the constricted section 2 and the end 3 is of gradually increasing diameter from the constricted area to the end 3 which constitutes the base of the drum, this gradually enlarging portion being indicated by the numeral 4.
The other or shorter portion flares sharply from the constricted section to the adjacent end forming the bell-like head end 5, the mouth of this end being of greater diameter than the mouth of the body at the base end. As shown, both ends of the body are opened and the base end is re-inforced by the flat ring 6, while the head end is re-inforced by the circular ring 7 which lies within the circumference of the head end.
the edge thereof being rounded to form a smooth surface with the reinforcing ring 7 for the membrane to bear against as is clearly shown in Fig. 2.
stretched across the open end of the head of the bell-shaped portion 5 is the usual membrane 00 8 which is of circular configuration and has secured to the edge thereof the ring 9 which hangs down from the reinforced edge of the head in the manner shown.
Surrounding the reinforced edge of the head is a tightening ring 10 which rests upon the ring 9 and which has its outer face recessed, as indicated at 11, to receive the hooked ends 12 of the head tightening screws 13. These screws 13 pass through apertures in the projecting portion 14 of a bracket 15 which is secured to the outer wall of the portion 5 of the drum by the bolts 16 which pass therethrough from the interior, as shown. The lower end of each of the screws carries a nut 17 which bears against the underside of the bracket 14 when threaded up upon the screw to pull the screw and tightening ring downwardly in the usual manner.
As shown, each of the brackets 15 has an eX- tension or foot portion 18 which bears against the outer face of the body of the head and in order to prevent the combined pressures of the bracket foot portions 18 from collapsing the body, there is secured about the inner face of the wall of the portion 5 a second reinforcing ring 19 which is arranged directly opposite the portions 18 of the brackets in the manner shown in Fig. l.
The base rim 6 is provided with a suitable aperture 20 to receive a ring 21 to which one end of a shoulder strap may be attached, the other end 90 of the strap being connected by the ring 23 with one of the tightening screws 13 in the manner shown.
From the foregoing description it will be readily seen that when the shoulder strap 22 of the present drum is slung over the shoulder of a carrier, the constricted portion 2 will position against the carriers side locating the head of the drum in the proper position to be played upon.
Because of the constricted central portion 2 of the present drum the tonal qualities thereof may be altered slightly by inserting therein a suitable muiing device such as a handkerchief or the like.
I claim:
1. A drum, comprising an elongated hollow metal body open at each end and constricted intermediate its ends, said body being of circular cross section and having one end substantially bell-shaped and of greater diameter than the other end, and a membrane stretched across the mouth of said bell-shaped end.
2. A drum comprising a hollow elongated metal body having an open end, a membrane overlying and engaging the edge of said open end, a ring secured to the edge of the membrane, a tightening ring engaging over the rst ring, tightening devices engaging said last ring, means for securing each of said tightening devices to the body oi the drum, and a reinforcing element Within the drum body adjacent the last mentioned means.
3. A drum comprising an elongated metal body or circular cross-section and having each end open, one end of the body defining a relatively short broad mouthed bell, the other end of the body denning a relatively long bell-like portion having a mouth of smaller diameter than the rst mentioned portion, a skin drawn across the mouth of the larger end, a reinforcing ring lying against the inner face of the drum body at the edge of the larger mouth thereof, and means for drawing the skin taut over the end of the body.
4. A drum comprising an elongated hollow metal body open at each end and having one end of greater diameter than the other, said body being tapered from each end inwardly to form a constricted central portion, a pair of reinforcing rings about the inner face of the body in the end of largest diameter, a plurality of brackets secured tothe exterior Wall of the body and overlying one of said reinforcing rings, a plurality of screw actuated pull members attached to each bracket, a skin stretched across the larger end of the body, and a ring member overlying the edge of said skin connected thereto and having a circumferential ange adapted to be engaged by said pull members.
