IMPROVEMENT IN Fl RE-ESCAPES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 198,626, dated December 11, 1877; application filed May 3, 1877.
To all whom it may concern:
'Be it known that I, MARCELLUS KERTSON, of the city of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fire- Escapes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The nature and objectof this invention are the construction of a cheap and reliable fireescape, which shall be always ready for immediate use, and adapted to be permanently secured to the windows of a hotel or dwelling,
. &c., or to be carried in a trunk or valise when traveling, and secured to a widow at a moments notice when an emergency may require it.
The nature and-character of my invention are illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and consist ,in a rope or light chain, A, provided at one end with an eye,.a, or other suitable device, such as a hook or dog, by which to secure it to the window frame or sill, and
the balls I), which are firmly and permanently secured to the rope or chain at intervals of about eighteen inches throughout its entire length.
By means of this device an individual may readily and with perfect safety escape from a burning building to the ground, the balls I) aflordi-ng a secure hold and preventing the hands from slipping, as will be readily understood. -It is also susceptible of being folded into a small and compact form, so as to occupy but little space, whether as a permanent fixture or to be carried about from place to place ball and rope, substantially as set forth.
