SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 289,286, dated November 27, 1883.

-; My invention relates to certain improve rnents in fire-escapes; and it consists in the improved structure, fully described hereinafter,

whereby the application of the improvements to buildings is readily effected, the device pre senting a neat appearance, and its effective oporation secured when required.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a front view of a window-frame, showing my device applied for operation; and Fig. 2 is asection. i

AB represent, respectively, the sill and side sectionsof a window-frame, upon the top bar, F, of which is constructed a rectangular case or receptacle, E. As the width of the top of the window-frame is ordinarily insufficient forthe requirements of the receptacle, I extend said receptacle by securing to the side sections, B0, of the frame, at theirupper sides,blocks a b, to the top of which and to the top of the sections B Ois secured the top 0 of the case or receptacle. The front faces of the blocks a b and front edge of the top 0 project beyond the plane of the window frame, and beneath the top a is a cross section, d, to the lower edge of which is hinged an angled door, 0, consisting of the parts f g, the part f, when the door is in a closed position, constituting a portion of the front of the receptacle, while the part g constitutes a portion of the bottom thereof. A horizontal shaft, G,within the casing E has its ends journaled in the blocks a Z) and rigidly mounted thereon, andtwo drums, H I, which revolve together. Around the drum I is wound arope, t,

which has one end fastened to the drum, while the pendent end carries a flexible belt, j, which is adapted to embrace the body of a person, to lower him when the rope is unwound. One end of a second rope, h, is secured to the drum H, but is wound around the same in adifferent direction from that on the drum I I, the said rope it being twice the length of the rope z. The disengaged end of the rope h passes through a rectangular opening, a, formed in the bar F of the window-frame, and is connected to a block or plug, Z, having abeveled edge, a, and adapted to be inserted and retained in therectangular opening a, when therein, by reasonof its beveled edge bearing against a similar beveled face consisting of one of the beveled sides of the slot or opening. A hand-ring, 0, is connected to the lower side of the block Z, to facilitate manipulation. Both ropes being wound up on their drums,the operation of the device is as follows: The angular door is swung back, and the ring 0 is grasped to pull the block I from the opening a, and the rope h is then unwound and passed to the ground its full length. During this revolution of the drums H I the rope 2',with the belt j,has been turning with the drum I, it requiring a revolution in a reverse direction to effect its unwinding. Thebelt j being passed around a persons body, or the end of said rope being attached to some article to be lowered, the person or. article descends and unwinds the rope iby gravity, and if it be a person he grasps the rope h, to regulate the speed of his descent.

When the end of the rope ishall have reached the ground, about one-half of the rope h will have been wound up upon the drum H, leaving sufficient unwound to effect the rewinding and ascent of the rope t by pulling on the rope h and revolving the drums.

It is intended that a gong or bell, M, located, in the chambers a or 12, (shown in dotted lines at the end of the case 13,) is to be connected with one of the moving parts of the device, so that it will be known at all times when the same is used, and thus prevent any fraudulent use thereof.
