Description

Oct. 23, 1934. 1.. c. LAWRENCE BOTTLE CAP AND OPENER Filed July 17, 1933 INVENTOR ATTORNEY Patented Oct. 23, 1934 some oar AND oran e Lloyd 0. Lawrence, Ariel, Pa. Application July 17, 1933, Serial No. 680,828
1 Claim.
The invention relates to a combined bottle cap and opener.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a combination device of the character specified, wherein the mouth of a bottle can be closed and sealed, the cap for the br ttle being of novel construction and readily removable at will, the opener for the cap being of novel construction to assure ready decapping of the bottle when required.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a combined cap and opener of this character, wherein the cap proper has formed therewith an arm which constitutes an opener for the removal of the cap from a bottle when applied thereto, the arm being normally against the neck of the bottle so as not to protrude therefrom and readily bendable to an opening position for the detachment of the cap from the bottle.
A further object of the invention is the provision of an article of this character which is extremely simple in construction, thoroughly reliable and eflicient in its. purpose, neat in appearance, readily and easily applied to and removed from a bottle, strong, durable, and inexpensive to manufacture.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described in detail, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, which discloses the preferred embodiment of the invention, and pointed out in the claims hereunto appended.
In the accompanying drawing:
Figure 1 is a fragmentary elevation of a bottle showing the cap and opener constructed in ac-, 40 cordance with the invention applied, the opener by full lines being shown in normal position andby dotted lines in decapping position.
Figure 2 is a view similar to Figure 1 looking at substantially right angles thereto, showing the opener in elevation.
Figure 3 is a plan view of the blank from which the combined cap and opener is made.
Figure 4 is a fragmentary sectional view on the line 4-4 of Figure 2.
Figure 5. is a sectional view on the line 5--5 of Figure 2.
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views in the drawing.
Referring to the drawing in detail, A designates generally a portion of the neck of a bottle of standard type, having at its open end or mouth the external mouth rim B, as usual. This mouth is closed by a crown" type cap 10, the marginal flange 11 of which is crimped or clinched against the rim B of such mouth, and the cap is formed from a disk-like blank C preferably made from metal, stamped or otherwise shaped to provide the flange 11.
Integrally formed with the cap 10 at the free edge of the flange 11 thereof is a strap-like extension 12 foldable on itself at the crease line 13 to provide inner and outer stretches 14 and 15, respectively, these being longitudinally ribbed at 16 to give rigidity and strength thereto. The inner portion 14 is foldable upon a crease line 17 next to the flange 11 to bring this extension from normal substantially perpendicular position to a substantially horizontal. position, the normal perpendicular position being shown by full lines in Figure 1 of the drawing, while the horizontal position is shown by dotted lines, and the direction of movement of the strap is illustrated by the arrow appearing in Figure 1 of the drawing.
Cut and bent from the portion 14 next to the crease line 17 is a pair of retaining lugs or cars 18, these being passed through slots 19 provided in the portion 15 for locking engagement therewith. The outer portion at its free end is provided with a curved recess 20 constituting an abutment end to engage the marginal flange 11 of the cap 10 when said extension is swung from perpendicular to substantially horizontal position, so that when an upward pull is exerted, the cap 10 will be detached from the mouth rim 3 of the mouth of the neck A of the bottle for the decapping thereof. As has been stated, normally the extension is in substantially perpendicular position against the neck A of the bottle so as to not unduly protrude therefrom and by an upward pull on this extension from the position just named, the abutment end 20 of the outer portion 15 of said extension will contact with the flange 11 of the cap 10, so that the bottle can be readily and conveniently decapped without excessive leverage or exertion on the part of a person when manipulating the extension. The upward force on extension exerts a pull upon the inner portion 14 of said extension at the free edge of the flange 11 of the cap 10, as will be apparent.
What is claimed is:
An article of the kind described comprising a. crown cap, a longitudinally ribbed folded-over llti 5 outermost folded-over portion being formed with a notch corresponding in shape to the side of the cap for the seating oi the latter therein when the said outermost folded-over portion is in contact with the cap, and ears struck from one of the folded-over portions and interlocked with the other folded-over portion to maintain these portions parallel with each other.
