Description

Filed Oct. 20, 1935 III, I '0' Inventor C. W y/76f Patented Jan. 23, 1934 UITED STATES PATENT OFFICE Application Gctober 20,
1 Claim.
My invention relates generally to a device for removing, replacing and holding crimped bottle caps such as are used to close carbonated beverage and other bottles and containers, and an important object or" my invention is to provide a simple and inexpensive device of this character which will make the opening and re-closing of containers of the type indicated easier, quicker and accompanied by less inconvenience and en able the preservation of more sanitary conditions.
Other objects and advantages of my invention will be apparent from a reading of the following description in connection with the drawing, wherein for purposes of illustration I have shown a preferred embodiment of my invention.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a top plan view of the embodiment.
Figure 2 is a side or edge elevational view of Figure 1 taken from the right thereof.
Figure 3 is a transverse vertical sectional View through the bottle cap engaging portion of the embodiment showing the same engaged with a cap on a bottle.
Figure 4 is a transverse vertical sectional view through the handle portion of the embodiment.
Referring in detail to the drawing, the numeral 5 refers generally to the handle portion of the device which is composed of a pair of laterally telescoping members of channel cross section, one of which is generally designated 6 and the remaining one 7. The manner of slidable overlap of the sides of the members 6 and '7 is clearly illustrated in Figure 4. The member 6 has a hole 8 near its outer end to enable attaching the device to a keyring or watch chain. The device will be made of suitable metal in any desired finish, and the top 10 of the cap-engaging portion generally designated 9, provides space as does the peripheral flange 11, for display of advertising matter.
The inner end of the channel member 6 is reduced to the side portion 12 which is then gently bent toward the right in the drawing as indicated at 13. The side portion 14 and the indicated side of the channel member '7 is similarly reduced to the form indicated in Figure 2 and bent similarly to the portion 13 as indicated at 15 into a position wherein it overlaps and extends upon the portion 13 as indicated in Figures 1 and 2. The outwardly tending ends of the portions 13, 15 are then brought into a circular form generally indicated 16 which has a depending skirt or peripheral flange 11 forming a cap to be placed over the bottle cap generally designated 17. Portions 18 in the lower part of the skirt or flange 11 are inwardly indented as indi-- cated in Figure 3 at a point which will bring the resultant embossed portions 19 into the groove 20 which is provided in this type of bottle cap 17 by the crimping thereof around and under 1933. Serial No. 694,490
the lip 21 of the bottle generally designated 22. Flanges 18 on the lower edge of the flange 11 hook under the lower edge of the bottle cap for removing the bottle cap.
As surmised, the material of which the device is made gives it a semi-flexible or spring character which enables constriction of the sides of the bottle cap engaging portion 9 around the bottle cap simply by compressing the channel members 6, '7 of the handle portion together. When the embodiment has been placed over a cap in the manner just indicated, bringing up the handle will effect removal of the cap, and the cap will be retained by the embossed portions 19 in the device, instead of flying as soon as released from the bottle and falling upon the floor or other place as a result of which the same may become contaminated and unsanitary and the replacement thereof on the bottle ill-advised. When it is desired to re-close the bottle, the device with the cap held therein is placed over the mouth of the bottle, and when properly centered thereon, a light tap on the top of the device will spring the bottle cap onto the bottle mouth so as to be held thereon. In replacing the cap on the bottle, the device may be left on the cap and then be supported on the bottle or the device may be removed from the cap to leave the cap in place on the bottle.
Although I have shown and described herein a preferred embodiment of my invention, it is to be definitely understood that I do not desire to limit the application of the invention thereto, and any change or changes may be made in material and structure and arrangement of parts, within the spirit of the invention and the scope of the subjoined claim.
What is claimed is:-
A bottle cap removing and replacing device comprising a split ring, handle forming extensions connected with the ends of the ring, said ring being of angle shape in cross section to provide a horizontal flange for engaging portions of the top of the cap, and a depending vertical flange, said vertical flange having inwardly extended projections thereon for engaging portions of the cap for removing the cap from a bottle when the ring is tilted upwardly by the handle, the horizontal flange acting as means for pressing the cap back upon the bottle when said flange is pressed upon.
