This invention relates to a device or attachment which may be used advantageously in conjunction with a sewing machine so that goods can be stitched and edge trimmed in one operation.
The principal object of the invention is the provision of a device or attachment of the indicated charactertoenable convenient adjustments to suit varieties of work, and which makes it possible for an operator to clearly view the work while operating the machine to secure accurate work with clean cut edges.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a device or attachment of the indicated character which will be simple-chicient and of substantial design. 1
The invention consists in the improvementsas hereinafter described and claimed, and as illustrated by way of example in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a plan view of the device or attachment operatively connected with portions of a sewing machine, and one of the parts being shown in section; v

As stated, the device or attachment is used in conjunctionwith a sewing machine; and in the drawings there have been illustrated portions of the machine directly involved consisting of the bed 10, feedlifting rock shaft 11 supported by suitable bearings, one of which is shown and designated 12, on the under side of the bed 10 at the front thereof; and a throat, feed and needle plate 13 which is detachably secured to the bed 10 by screws 14, the plate 13 being flush with the upper surface of the bed 10.
The device or attachment includes a unit which is secured to the plate 13 so as to be removed with the plate 13 by removing the screws 14. The unit includes a part or block 15 which is secured to the plate 13 by screws 16 passing upwardly through the plate 13 into threading engagement with the part 15. This part or block 15 has a projection 1'7 over which the material or cloth to be stitched and trimmed rides. The part 15 also has spaced bearings 18. The unit also includes a trimming or shearing couple consisting of a knife, cutter or trimmer blade 19 and a bar 20 having a shearing or cutting edge 21 with which the blade 19 cooperates. The blade 19 is 55 secured to a member 22 on one end of a shaft 23 by a screw 24 and apin 25. The screw 24 passes through theblade 19 and is in threading engagement with atapped hole in'the shaft23'. 1 The pm 25 is carried by the member22and extendsin a hole in the blade '19 to 'pre'ventthe blade from .60. turning. The member 22 is rounded as at '26 so as to deflect the trimmed portion of the material or cloth, as shown'most clearly in Figure lithe cloth or material being shown in dot-and dash lines and being designatedZ'I; The'shaft 23 is 05 supported by the bearings 18 and has axial and also rocking movement in said bearings. The bar 20 is held in place bythe p1a'te13 and the part 15, and also aset'screw 28, as shown most clearly in Figure 4'; Tl're p'art 15 has a groove 79 29 to receive one edge of the bar 20. The screw 28 is in threading engagement withthe partlii and bears on the bar 20; "-By loosening the screw 28, the bar'20 may he "slid to various positions of adjustment in order to trim-'thematerial or cloth 7 at various distances withre'spect to-the line of stitchingindicated Eat 30. -It"* will be "apparent that the shearing line of the' elements 1 9 and 20 will be adjacent the edge of the material or cloth being-fed in the'usuahmanner, and that this 80 shearing line will be" parallel to the stitching line 39, as shown most clearly in Figure 1. "Resilient means is employed to yieldinglyhold'the'blade 19against the cuttingedge'21, to thus steady the blade 19 and keep it in proper shearing 'relation with respect to the edge 21. The said resilient means con istscra; strip 31 of spring steeL and this strip 31 is substantially ofllJ-shape and has one end thereof secured to thepart 15'by a screw 32, and its" oppositendhas a notch 33" therein so that said endmay be disposedlagainst a shoulder 34 on the projectingend-of 'the shaft 23 opposite that having the blade 19. The shaft 23 is groved to provide the shoulder 34, and the reduced portion 35 of the shaft is disposed in the notch 33, as shown most clearly in Figure 3. It will be apparent that the spring strip 31 constantly urges the shaft 23 axially in one direction to yieldingly hold the blade 19 against the cutting edge 21 of the bar 20. It will also be apparent that when the screw 28 is loosened for the purpose of adjusting the bar 20, the blade 19 may be adjusted at the same time by reason of the fact that the shaft 23 may have axial movement, and also by reason of the resiliency of the spring 1 strip 31.
The blade 19 is caused to move or rock in a vertical plane with respect to the cutting edge 21 to produce the shearing or trimming action, in response to the operation of the rock shaft 11.
This is accomplished by the use of an arm 36 which is secured to the shaft 23 by a set screw 37. The arm 36 has an arbor or pivot 38 on its outer end disposed parallel to the shaft 23. A curved link 39 has its upper end pivotally, and
slidably connected with the pivot 38, and. the,
lower end of the link 39 is pivotally connected as at .40 with one end of an arm 41 whose opposite end is secured-to the shaft 11 by-a-set screw 42. It will now be apparent that the blade 19 will have a rocking motion imparted thereto in response to the rocking motion of the shaft 11',"

It will also be apparent that while the material or cloth is being stitched, an edge portionthereof and the pivot 38enables adjustments to be made to the cutting bar 20 and the blade 19 without detaching the arm 36 from the link 39; that the pivotal connection-ofthe link 39 with the pivot 38 of arm 36 may be disengagedby first either detaching the blade 19, or by turning the shaft 23 so that the blade'l9 will clear the bar 20, and then moving the shaft23 axially tothe right as viewed in Fig." 3; and that the unit comprising the parts shown in Figure 3 may be readily detached by merely removing the screws 14, when it is desired to eliminate shearing or trimming of the work. w :Iclaim:-- 1-, 1. In an edge trimming device, the'combination of' cooperative shearing elements -mounted tov positiontheir shearing line adjacent the edge of the material traveling by, both of said elements being adjustable,.means causing the adjustment of one of said elements as the other is being adjusted, and also to maintain the ad:- justment of the former in cooperativeshearing relation to the latter, said means including a rockable and slidable member on which said shearing element is mounted, and a resilient member constantly acting on saidinember; and means to rock said member-which also allows said adjustment to be made without requiring disconnection of said last means.
3. In an edge trimming device, the combination of cooperative shearing elements, a shaft mounted for axial and rocking movement, one of said elements being secured to said shaft for movement therewith, a driven element for imparting rocking motion, an arm on said shaft, an arm on said driven element, and a link betweensaidarms and having pivotalconnection therewith, the pivotal connection of the link with the arm'on said shaft being such that the link shaft first on its own axis and then moving it axially a predetermined degree. 4. In an edge trimming device, the combination of cooperative shearing elements, a shaft mounted-fer axial and rocking movement, one of saidelements being secured to said shaft for movement therewith, a driven element for imparting rocking motion, an arm on said shaft, an arm on said driven element, a link between said arms and having pivotal connection therewith, the pivotal connection of the link with the armfon saidshaft being such that the link may be disengaged from said arm by moving the shaft first on its own axis and then moving it axially a predetermined degree, and resilient means acting on said'shaftto constantly urge it axially, so as to maintain the shearing ele- 106 ment thereon incooperative relation to the other shearing element.
