Description

9 B. H. LIVINSON ET AL 9 PINKING ATTACHMENT O R MACHINE Filed May 31, 1933 2 Sheets-Sheet l INVENT RS Ben am; [ILL/Wham & Henry (fwebskr Dec. 18, 1934. B. H. LIVINSON ET AL. 1,984,937
PINKING ATTACHMENT OR MACHINE 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 Filed May 31, 1953 Ben/a ill/ $353512 Henry E'Websfer ATTO R N EY design shown in Figures 1, 2, and 3, plates 14 and 15 are provided at the upper and lower ends of the slot to hold the cutter therein, however, it may be held by any other means or the sides of the upper part may be inclined or dovetailed, round, triangular, or of any shape so that the cutter may be held in the groove without the plates 14 and 15. At one side of the lower part of the head 13 is an extension 16 to which a lever 1'7 is pivotally attached by a pin 18, andin'the design shown in Figures 1, 2, and 3 this lever is attached to the cutter 11 by a link 19 thru screws 20 and 21. This lever mayalso be directly attached to the cutter, or attached to the upper end thereof, as shown in Figure-s6 and '7, or connected thereto in any manner or by any means. At the outer end 22 of the; lever isya plate 23 having a slot 24 therein which may b placed over a screw 25 on the needlebarof a sewing machine, as shown in Figure 1, sothat as the needle bar travels upward and downward'it will move the lever 17 upward and downward and thereby operate the cutter -11 with a reciprocating movement. The plate 23 is adjustablyheld to the end of the lever 1'7 so that lit maybe moved upward or downward to adjust the travel of the lever in relation to the movement of the needle bar, and it will be noted that it is pivotally attached by a screw 26 and provided with a slot 27 thru which another screw,28 may extend, and the screws may be tightened to hold the plate in any position. The lower end of the cutter 11 is provided with a triangular shaped point 29 to correspond with the opening 10 in the die 8, and it will be understood that the point of the cutter may also be of any other shape to correspond with dies of different shapes to cut pinking of any shape or design.
In the design shown in Figures 6, '7, and 8 the plates 14 and 15 are omitted and the slot 12 formed with inclined edges to correspond with similar edges of the cutter so that thecutter may be held thereinwithout the use of theplates.
- It will also be understood that the cutter and slot may be made round, as shown in Figure 10, in which the cutter is indicated by the numeral 30, and the slot by the numeral 31, or of any other shapeor design. In the design shown in Figure 10 one side of the cutter is provided witha slot 32 in which a point 33 of a. set screw 34 may extend as shown. It will beunderstood, however, that any other means may be usedfor holding the cutter. in position, and it will also 7 be understood that the lower or cutting end-of the cutter may be-pointed or of any shape. In the design shown in Figures 6 and 7 a clip 35 is attached to the upper end of the cutter by a screw 36 and this is pivotally attached to a link 37, thru a pin 38 and the lower end of the link is pivotally attached to the lever 1'7 thru a pin 39. The device may otherwise be constructed as shown in Figures 1, 2, and .3, and it will also be understoodthat the connection between the lever and cutter shownin Figures 1, 2, and 3 may be used with the device shown in Figure 6, or the connection shown in Figure 6 may be used with the device shown in Figure 1.
The device may also be used for cutting material for hemstitching so that a diamond shaped cutter may be provided to cut openings 40 in a piece of material 41, as shown in Figure 11, and it will alsobe understood that semi-circular notches 42 may be cut in the edge of the material instead of the V shaped notchesas shown in Figure 5; It W111 also be understood that these notches may be of any type or design and may be made in the edge or edges or in any part of the material.
It will be understood that changes may be made in the construction without departing from the spirit of the invention. One of which changes may be in the use of a stand of any other type or description, another may be in the use of other means for holding the stand to thesewing machine, another may be in the use of a cutter bar of any other type, and still another'may'be' in'the use of other means for connecting the cutter to the needle bar to provide reciprocating motion therefor.
The construction will be readily understood from the foregoing description. In use the device may be'attached to the machine and material to be pinked may be placed over the base and fed operated by any other means ,so that itmayfbe provided as an independent unit and operated by any means. Any other type of feeding. mechanism, similar to the presser foot of as'ewingmachine, or of any description may be incorporated in the foot or base of the device and this'may be used. independent of the sewing machine or in combination with a sewing machine, .asmay be desired. f Y The die is so positioned that it will engage the surface of the cutter with slight friction and the continual movingup and down will sharpen the edge of the cutter. Adjusting the travelfof the cutter makes it possible to out only with thepoint thereof, or with more of the cutting surface so that it is possible to cut shallow or deep pinking. It has been found that cutting materialin this man ner provides a. selvage edge which prevents fraying or raveling and at the same time providesfa unique-finish. a i f,'.' I Having thus fully described the inventionwhat we claim as new and desire to obtain by Letters Patent, is: I
1. In a pinking attachment adapted to'be used on sewingmachines-a triangular shaped cutter,
means slidably and vertically mounting said cut- 2. An attachment for sewing machinesforthe like, comprising a stand adapted to be attached to the bed plate of a sewing machine having a vertically positioned head with a groove therein, a cutter slidable in saidgroove, a lever pivotally mounted at one side of said head extending across theface .of said groove and with the free end adapted to engage a thumb screw on the needle bar of the sewing machine, and means pivotally attaching said lever to the cutter to'move the cutter upward and downward with the needle bar. 3. An attachment as'described-in claim 2 m which the attanhing means of the lever to the cutter comprises a link pivotally attached to the lever and cutter.
4. An attachment as described in claim 2 in which the means by which the outer end of the lever is attached to the needle bar is adjustable to regulate the travel of the cutter.
5. The combination with a stand having a vertically positioned head with a vertical groove therein and a base from which the head is supported by a goose-neck arm providing clearance under the head; of a cutter slidable in said groove and a lever pivotally mounted on one side of said head extending across said cutter, pivotally attached to the cutter, and having means at the opposite or free end for engaging the needle bar of a. sewing machine with the base of said stand attached to the bed plate of the sewing machine and in which the needle bar moves the cutter upward and downward thru said lever.
6. A combination as described in claim 5 in which a plate having an opening therein corresponding with the shape of the cutter is adjustably mounted on the bed plate with the opening 10 positioned to correspond with the cutter.
