INKWELL ATTACHMENT FOR DESKS Filed Feb. 16, 1932 j Tego .E P-UEVES (Ittornegi' Patented Sept. 4, 1934 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE INKWELL ATTACHMENT FOR DESKS 7 Fred. R. Purves, San Diego, Calif.
Application February 16, 1932, Serial No. 593,293
1 Claim.
My invention relates to ink well attachment for desks, and the objects of my invention, are: First, to provide an attachment of this class which is particularly adapted for use in conjunc- 5 tion with school desks having recessed ink wells;
Second, to provide an attachment of this class which prevents ink from dripping on objects or the floor below the desk top should ink spill or leak from the ink well;
Third, to provide an attachment of this class which is readily secured in sealed relation with the under side of the desk;
Fourth, to provide an attachment of this class which, when once attached, requires considerable eiiort to remove, thus providing an attachment of this class which is well able to withstand petty vandalism of school children, and
Fifth, to provide on the whole a novelty constructed ink well attachment for desks, which is simple of construction proportional to its functions, durable, efficient in its action, and which will not readily deteriorate or get out of order.
With these and other objects in view as will appear hereinafter, my invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts and portions as will be hereinafter described in detail and particularly set forth in the appended claim, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the characters of reference thereon which form a part of this application, in which:
Figure 1 is a fragmentary perspective view of a school desk with parts and portions broken away and in section so as to disclose my novel ink Well attachment; Fig. 2 is a sectional View of my ink well attachment showing adjacent portions of the desk in section and the ink well in elevation; Fig. 3 is a top view or plan view of my attachment with the gasket shown fragmentarily,
and Fig. 4 is abottom view of my ink well attachment.
Similar characters of reference refer .to similar parts and portions throughout the several views of the drawing.
The conventional school desk includes a top member A provided'with an annular opening B therethrough near its upper right-hand corner. The opening B is provided with a narrow internally extending flange or ledge B1. The ledge B1 is adapted to support a flanged upper margin or rim C1 of an ink well C. The ink well C screwably receives a cover D.
My attachment is in the form of a cup member 1 having a flat bottom portion 1a and diverging upwardly extending sidewalls 1b. The side walls lb terminate at their upper extremities in an outwardly extending flange 1c. The flange in turn is provided atits outer periphery with an upwardly directed rim 1d which is relatively narrow. The flange 1c is adapted to receive an annular gasket 2 which may be formed of blotting paper. The gasket 2 is preferably confined within the margins of the rim 1d and has a normal thickness somewhat greater than the height of said rim so that when the cup member is pressed against the under side of the desk, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the gasket 2 is compressed. The cup member is fitted over the ink well C in v concentric relation therewith and is secured to the underv side of the desk by means of screws or the like 3 which extend through openings 16.
' The cup 1 is considerably larger than the ink well 0 so as to provide a chamber large enough to receive whatever ink may be spilt from the ink well.
Though I have shown and described a partic ular construction, combination and arrangement" of parts and portions, I do not wish to be limited to this particular construction, combination and arrangement, but desire to include in the scope of my invention the construction, combination and. arrangement substantially as set forth in the appended claim. 2
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
In an ink well attachment for desks the combination with a desk having an opening therein adapted to receive and support an ink well in suspended relation with said desk of an ink well attachment comprising an ink reservoir cup member secured to said desk around the lower side of said opening in spaced relation around the lower side of said ink well, the upper edge of said cup member being provided with an out wardly extending flange, then an upwardly extending flange with its edge adapted to press into the under side of the desk table, and a gasket interposed between the outwardly extending flange and the desk table whereby a double seal is formed between said cup member and. the desk table'in spaced relation outwardly from the ink well and opening in the desk.
