Application April 22, 1933, Serial No. 667,332 2 Claims. (Cl. 15626) This invention relates to'a combination shade holder and guide and in particular to a unitary structure which may be employed to prevent accidental falling of the shade and unwinding thereof.

An important object of my invention is to provide a combination safety shade holder and guide which, being made from a single piece of sheet metal and stamped and bent to form, may be produced at small cost and will serve the purpose of holding the shade in the'proper position with relation to a window and will also prevent fluttering of the shade as well as accidental unwinding thereof, the important feature of my invention being the use of channeled extensions providing a guide or yoke through which the shade material passes which limits the movement of the shade therethrough and prevents premature un winding of the shade.

A still further object of my invention is to provide a device of the character referred to which will prevent air currents from pulling the shade out through the upper part of the window when the same is opened, thus keeping the shade vertical and inside the window, preventing it from getting dirty as is commonly the case when the shade is blown out through the top of the window and hangs outside.

Changes and variations may be made in the construction shown and described without departing from the principles of the invention or sacrificing its chief advantages; hence such invention is not to be confined to the structures shown in the accompanying drawing, in which,--

Figure 1 is a view in elevation showing the application of my improved shade holder and guide to a window to support a shade in the proper position therein.

Figure 2 is a section on the line 2--2 of Figure 1 showing the relative position of the channeled extensions which provide a guide or yoke through which the shade passes.

Figure 3 is a plan view of one of the guides showing the same in development.

Figure 4 is a View similar to Figure 3 showing the opposite guide member in its development.

Figure 5 is a view in perspective of a modified form of my invention for use in connection on the outer surface of a window frame, the same being arranged for use where the forms as illustrated in Figures 1 and 2, are not possible due to the short space between the sides of the window opening, and

Figure 6 is a further modified form of my construction arranged to be used as is the form illustrated in Figures 1 and 2, but showing a simplified form of construction.

Referring to the drawing in detail, 5 indicates a window opening in which it is desired to position a shade 6 constructed in the usual manner and including the shade core 7 from one end of which extends the fiat projection 8 andfrom the opposite end of which extends the journal pin 9. V

In view of the fact that both of the combination safety shade holder andguide members indicated generally by the numeral 10, are identical in construction except that they are right and left, it is believed that a description of one will suffice and in making up the holder,'the same is preferably made of heavy sheet metal which may be stamped and bent to shape in a few operations. The blank, as illustrated in Figure 1; is provided withthe extended portions 11 which, when bent up to shape,jprovide the channeled extensions 12 which constitute guides or yokes and between which is arranged to pass, the shade 6. The bending or grooving operation of these extensions 11 is such that the inner edges 13, as indicated in Figure 2, are slightly higher than 3Q the outer edges 14 so that a greater holding surface is provided between the extensions 12 and also danger of the tearing or fraying of the shade is eliminated by the smooth surface presented by the extended edges 13. p

In its upper portions, the blank is provided with the extended part 15 which is slotted as at 16 and provided with the ears 17 which, when folded in the position illustrated in Figure 1, provides a v receptacle 18 which houses the extensions 8 and 9D 9 of the shade roller. The upper end 15 of the blank is provided with a screw hole 19 as is the intermediate portion 20, the screw holes in this instance being designated by the numerals 21. The only difference between the right and left hand members of the construction illustrated in Figure l beside from the fact that they are right and left, is that the right side member is provided with a circular opening 22 for the reception of the journal pin 9 while the opening 16 is 10 elongated to permit insertion of the flat end of the shade roller.

It will be noted that thelower portion including the guides or yokes 12 are offset relatively to the center of the shade so that the shade when 1 hanging vertically will pass through the guides or yokes 12.

It will be particularly noted in all of the forms of my invention that during the formation of the guides 12 from the extensions 11, the bead in the intermediate portion 20 of the blank, is extended as at 23 to a point adjacent one of the screw holes 21, this bead reinforcing the bracket and making the guide 12 strong and rigid.

Referring to the form of my invention as illustrated in Figure 5, the guide yokes 12 are formed in identically the same manner as previously referred to and the intermediate portion 25 of the blank is provided with a side extension 26 including an car 27 in which the screw holes 28 are provided, one being also provided in the portion 25 of the blank. The upper edge of the portion 25 is bent to provide an inwardly projecting ear 29 having a slot 30 therein, the left hand one having instead of the slot 30, a hole.

Referring to the modified form of my invention illustrated in Figure 6, the form is substantially as that illustrated in Figure 5 with the exception that no side piece 26 is employed and one side of the center portion 32 is rounded as at 33 and terminates at the upper edge in an inwardly extending ear 34 which is slotted or provided with a hole to receive the end of the shade roller. The center portion 32 of the blank is provided, also, with the screw holes 35 through the medium of which the device may be attached to the window frame.

It is evident, therefore, that I have provided a combination shade holder andguide which is cheap to manufacture, can be made from a single piece of metal and when in use in connection with the window shade prevents the same from fluttering, prevents it from unwinding and the guide portions extending as they do out toencompass the edges of the shade, are arranged to be engaged by the lower end of the shade in which the shade stick is disposed so that in running the shade all the way up, it is simply necessary to release the roller and let the shade run up until the lower edge thereof is caught by the guides or holders 12.

3 -What I claim is:-

1. A combination safety shade holder and guide comprising a body shaped to provide an oifset member at the upper end thereof and having an opening in said offset member for receiving a window shade roller projection, U-shaped channeled portions extending horizontally from the lower part of said body in the same direction as said offset upper end member and constituting a guide for the shade, a reinforcing head inthe body extending to a point between said channeled por tions, and said body having openings therein for the reception of a securing means adjacent-the offset member and the end of said bead.
