J. BARTA LAMP HOLDER FOR mums CAPS Filed July 25, 1924 Patented Feb. 24, 1925.
JOSEPH BARTA, OF MARTIN S FERRY, OHIO.
LAMP HOLDER FOR IKINER3 CAPS.
Application filed July 25, 1924. Serial No. 728,222.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Josnrn Basra, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Martins Ferry, in the county of Belmont and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lamp Holders for Miners Caps, of which the following isa specification.
My invention is in the nature of an improvement upon the construction disclosed in my prior Patent No. 1,397,200 of November 15, 1921., and is intended to overcome certain min-or objections to the patented device and to improve the same in the light of experience.
An object of-the invention is to provide a holder that may be employed with a cap carried frame of somewhat flexible material and will strengthen and support the same in proper form.
Another object is to provide a holder into which the hook of the lamp can be readily inserted without taking care to have the lamp in any particular position, and wherein II the hook will be firmly supported at several points against any swinging movement either sidewise or from front to rear.
Other objects will be apparent from the following detailed description and the appended claims.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a perspective View of a cap with the holder attached and the lamp re moved.
Figure 2 is a perspective view of the supporting frame to which the holder is at tached.
Figure 3 is a vertical section through a portion of the cap, the frame and the holder, with the lamp indicated in dotted outlines.
Figure 4 is a bottom plan view of the holder.
Figure 5 is a top plan view of the holder.
The drawings disclose the usual miners cap A to the front of which is fastened the Z-shaped frame B of leather or fibre or similar material which bends with considerable ease. The upper arm 1 of the frame B is attached to the top of the cap and the lower arm 2 to the visor, While the portion 3 occupies a substantially vertical position when the device is in use. The fastenings are preferably rivets or similar means.
If a holder such as shown in my prior patent is attached to a frame of any material which may bend without difficulty, it is apt to distort the frame and allow the lamp to hang in irregular and varying positions. I have, therefore, devised my new and improved holder which forms my present invention and which cooperates especially with a frame 13 such as described although so far as some features are concerned, it has great utility when employed with other types of fran'ies.
This holder may be designated as a whole by the reference letter C and is made of copper, brass or other desired material. It has a top portion whichrests on and is attached to the top portion 1 of the frame B and a front portion 5 at substantially right angles thereto which contacts with and is attached to the upperpart of the vertical portion 3 of the frame.
Closely adjacent the bond 6 between the portions 1 and 3 of the frame B is a substantially circular hole 7 which communicates with a \l-shaped cut 8 extending downward into the vertical portion 3. The upper or top portion 4 of the holder has a depending tubular extension 9 which extends through the hole 7 Communicating with the front side of the top of the extension 9 is a groove 10 in the top, front and through the right angle portion 11 of the holder. This groove extends downward almost to the bottom of the holder but is deepest at the right angle 11. It is not cut clear through the metal but the angle portion is thickened so that the bottom 12 of this groove lies within the ll-shaped cut 8 in the frame B, as clearly illustrated in Figure 3.
A flange 13 surrounds the top of the tubu lar extension 9 and the groove 10 in the top part 4 of the holder. The top of the eX- tension 9 is flared outwardly at 15 and communicates with the groove in order to receive readily the straight end of the hook d of the lamp D when it is positioned. For a similar purpose the front inside corners of the flange 13 are beveled at 14 as shown.
When the straight portion of the hookd is within the tubular extension 9, obviously fore and aft swinging movement of the lamp is prevented, and since the curved portion d" of the hook lies in the groove 10 and contacts with the bottom thereof through substantially its whole extent, any sidcwise movement is prevented, so that the lamp is held against any movement independent of the cap.
The thickened angle portion 11 of the holder enables the groove 10 to be made quite deep which aids in preventing any accidental displacement. The right angle form of the holder will prevent any bending of the Z-shaped frame B at its upper bend and will maintain this frame in proper form throughout a long period of use.
It is obvious that the lamp hook cl may be readily and quickly inserted in the holder and that the lamp will be held firmly against movement relative to the cap. Various detail changes as regards material, proportions and the like may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention which is to be regarded as limited only by the scope of the appended claims.
I claim as my invention:
1. A device for supporting a miners lamp upon a cap comprising a Z-shaped frame of somewhat flexible material having an opening in the top adjacent the upper bend communicating with a groove extending down in the vertical part, a right angle holder attached to said frame and having a tubular extension extending downward through said opening and a groove communicating therewith and extending downward in the front portion of the holder and a flange at the sides of the groove on the top of the holder and having its inner front corners beveled.
2. A holder for miners lamps comprising a right angle metal member thickened at the right angle, a downward tubular extension from the top of said member and a deep groove in the thickened portion communicating with said extension, whereby the strai ht portion of the lamp hook is received in the extension and the curved portion fits snugly in said groove substantially throughout its extent.
3. A holder for miners lamps comprising a right angle metal member thickened at the right angle, and a downward tubular extension from the top of said member and having a flared upper end, the thickened right angle portion and the front having a groove which communicates with the extension and has flanges at the sides thereof on the top portion, which flanges are beveled on their front inner corners, whereby the straight portion of the lamp hook is received in the extension and the curved portion fits snugly in said groove substantially throughout its length.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto subscribed my name.
JOSEPH BARTA.
