Description

July 24, 1934. s. GERSHOWITZ ET AL TALKI NG DOLL Filed March 16, 1935 INVENTORS Jama e 43 GefiJ/zom'fz a LLLULMJL Patented July 24, 1934 UNETED STATES TALKING DOLL Samuel Gershowitz, New York, and Bernard Lipfert, Brooklyn, N. Y.
Application March 16,
1 Claim.
This invention relates to talking dolls and has for one of its objects the provision of a doll of the character referred to which is adapted to produce a sound or talk when actuated for walking.
Another object of the invention is to provide a doll of this nature with movable means in operative communication with a sounding device therein, so that when the said means is moved the sounding device will be actuated to produce a sound.
Another object is to produce a doll of the character described in which the maximum simplicity of construction and operation is secured.
Other objects and advantages will appear as the nature of the improvements is better understood, the invention consisting substantially in the novel arrangement and co-relation of parts herein fully described, and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein similar reference characters are used to describe corresponding parts throughout the several views, and then finally pointed out and specifically defined and indicated in the appended claim.
The disclosure made the basis of exemplifying the present inventive concept suggests a practical embodiment thereof, but the invention is not to be restricted to the exact details of this disclosure, and the latter, therefore, is to be understood from an illustrative, rather than a restrictive standpoint.
The invention idea involved is capable of receiving a variety of mechanical expressions, one of which, for the purpose of illustration, is shown in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a fragmental front view of a doll showing one embodiment of our invention.
Figure 2 is a side view thereof partly in section and Figure 3 is a view similar to Figure 1 of a modified form of the invention.
Referring now to the drawing in detail 5 indicates a hollow doll body made of any suitable material and provided at the lower end thereof with a rod 6. A pair of legs '7 and 8 slotted at 9 and 10 respectively are respectively provided with plates 11 and 12, secured at their lower ends to the said legs and provided at their upper ends with sleeves 13 pivotally supported on the said rod 6.
Approximately midway of the body 5 there is a strap 14 secured thereto in which strap there is rotatably mounted a pair of oppositely disposed and spaced apart crank members 15 and 16 secured to a strap 17 which carries a sounding device 18 of the gravity or weighted casing enclosed type. A link 19 is secured at its lower end to the plate 11 and is provided at its upper end with a slot 20 in engagement with the crank 15. A similar link 21 is secured at its lower end to the plate 12 and is provided at its upper end with a 1933, Serial No. 661,010
slot 22 in operative engagement with the crank 16.
In this form of our invention the sounding device is operated for talking when the legs are moved during walking or otherwise.
To produce a walking movement, the doll body is grasped in one or both hands and permitted to rest upon one leg, say for instance leg 7 and then a slight urging pressure is applied to the doll. This pressure causes a rocking movement of the plate 11 and swings the link 19 in the direction of the arrow 25 which actuates the crank 15 and causes the sounding device 18 to swing through an arc of approximately 90 degrees in the direction of the arrow 26 causing the sounding device to produce a sound. Simultaneously with the said movement, the crank 16 is swung rearwardly of its Figure 2 position, carrying the link 21 with it and swinging the leg 8 forwardly. The above described action is now repeated with the doll resting upon its leg 8 and the sounding device is brought back to the position shown, in Figures 1 and 2. It is to be understood that the sounding device may be operated by merely moving the legs to and fro without resting the doll on the said legs.
In Figure 3 we have shown a modified form of our invention wherein the arms 30 and 31 are each provided with slotted links 32 in communication with the cranks 15 and 16. In this form of the invention, a partial rotative movement of the said arms will operate the sounding device from one position to another to produce a sound.
If desired, the dolls head 35 may be suitably connected to the cranks 15 and 16 to operate the sounding device when the head is moved. In fact, many other movable members may be connected to the crank means to operate the sounding device to produce a sound.
From the foregoing, it will be seen that we have provided a doll, which when its legs, arms, head, etc., are moved, said movement will actuate a sounding device within the doll to produce a sound or talk.
We desire it understood that our invention may just as readily be embodied in other toy figures as for instance animals and the like. Therefore, wherever in the claim the word doll is used, other toy figures are to be included.
Having described our invention, what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
A doll comprising a body, a supporting strap carried thereby, cranks pivotally mounted, one at each end of the said strap, a casing carried by the said cranks, a weighted type sounding device in the casing, and a pair of movable members carried by the body in engagement with the cranks to partially rotate the casing and cause the sounding device to produce a sound.
