Description

T. s. REED. LeatherRounding Machines. No. 196,480.
Patented Oct. 23, 1877.v
ATTUBNEYS.
N, PETERS. Pnorn-Llmoehmnsn. wksummou. o c
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS S. REED, OF OALAIS, VERMONT, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND WALTER FULLER, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN LEATHER-ROUND'ING MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 196,480, dated October 23, 1877; application filed July 9, 1877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS S. REED, of Calais, in the county of Washington and State of Vermont, have invented a new and Improved Leather-Rounding Machine, of which the following is a specification:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved machine. Fig. 2 is an end elevation, showing the driving-gear. Fig. 3 is an end elevation, showing the pivoted journal-box.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding part-s.
The invention will first be described in connection with the drawing, and then pointed out in the claim.
In the drawing, A A are rolls supported by a frame, B, and made to rotate together by the spur-wheels a a, placed on their [shafts The journal-boxes of the lower roll are fixed in the end pieces of the frame, and the boxes of the upper roll are movable, the box I) being pivoted in the end pieces 0 of the frame B, and the box d arranged to slide in the end pieces 6. The box d is adjusted by a screw, f,-
that passes through a yoke that is attached 'to the said end piece. The rolls A are grooved circumferentially at intervals.
The grooves are semicircular, and diminish .regularly in size, so that the leather to be rounded maybe gradually compressed and reduced in size by passing it through the difierent grooves until it has attained the required diameter. 7 V
At one end of the lower roll there is a rectangular groove, a, and upon the upper roll there is a corresponding collar or flange, a. The groove and flange are designed to prevent end motion in the rolls.
The rolls may be turned by a crank or in any other convenient manner.
The machine may be used for rounding reins, traces, belting, &c.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- In machines for rounding leather, the upper roll, having one of its journals supported in a pivoted box, I), mounted in the frame 13, and the other in a sliding box, (I, as and for the purpose described. 1
