DISPLAY BACKING AND CARD Filed Deq. 19, 1930' 2 Sheets-Sheet l May 22, 1934- J. L. GARFIELD DISPLAY BACKING AND CARD Filed Dec. 19, 1930 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 Patented May 22, 1934 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 1 Claim.
My invention relates to an advertising display backer thought to have its best application with Christmas wreaths or the like.
A purpose of my invention is to display a popular selling slogan such as Buy now inside a seasonal and preferably a festive decoration such as a Christmas wreath, desirably associating a small article of merchandise or/and a small display card with the slogan, and optionally displaying the merchandise or/and the display card inside the wreath without the slogan, or in association with the slogan without the wreath.
A further purpose is to provide a novel display stand or backer that will be well adapted to interchangeable use with different slogans or/and diiierent wreaths.
A further purpose is to provide an easel support for a wreath backer or the like adapted to present the backer when hung on a wall so that it may face either horizontally or diagonally downwardly and that when set upon a counter or table may face diagonally upwardly.
A further purpose is to slit a wreath backer toward the top and bottom thereof in a way to provide both an upwardly directed tab and a downwardly directed tab near the top and one or more upwardly directed tabs near the bottom,
adapting the vertically spaced tabs alternatively to cooperatively support upper and lower edges of a single relatively large card or to individually support small articles as cards or merchandise.
Further purposes will appear in the specification and in the claim.
I have elected to show onemain form only of my invention, showing however minor modifications and selecting a main form and modifications thereof that are practical and efficient in operation and which well illustrate the principles involved.
Figure 1 is a front elevation showing a wreath mounted upon a display backer embodying a desirable form of my invention and displaying a removable article of merchandise and a removable card advertisement respectively above and below a printed slogan.
Figure 2 is a vertical section of Figure 1 taken 59 upon the line 22 thereof, but omitting an article of merchandise and a card advertisement displayed in Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a front view of the structure of Figure 1, with the wreath of Figure 1 removed and illustrating a folded easel support not visible in Figure 1 and that may be optionally omitted.
Figure 4 is a side elevation of Figure 3.
Figure 5 is a side elevation corresponding to Figure 4 but with parts folded in Figure 4 for hanging against a wall shown unfolded in Figure 5 to serve as an easel.
Figure 6 is a. front view corresponding to Figure 3 but with the displayed article of merchandise and the price card of Figure 3 replaced by a relatively large card presenting a different slogan from that of Figure 3 and a diiierent article of merchandise and a tag thereof.
Figure '7 is a rear elevation of Figure 6.
Figure 8 is a perspective view of a detail, comprising an easel in a set up position, ready to receive a display backer to which it is normally fastened permanently or removably.
Figure 9 is a side view showing assembled details including my easel and display backer of Figures 4 and. 5 with the easel unfolded and supported in a display position against a vertical wall.
Describing in illustration and not in limitation and referring to the drawings:-
My invention is directed to means for easily associating a festive decoration such as a Christmas wreath with a popular selling slogan such as Buy now with desirably a subordinate association of a small article of merchandise or printed advertisement as illustrated in Figure 1, where the wreath 10 is carried by a cardboard backer 11, the backer presenting within the interior of the wreath the slogan Buy now and being provided with means for carrying suitable merchandise 12 or suitable advertising matter 13, either or both, above and below the slogan.
The backer, desirably cardboard, is slitted above and below the slogan at 14 and 15 for use in removably and conveniently fastening any small article or articles that the user may wish to present within the wreath in association with the slogan.
Preferably the slit 14 is such as to provide one or more downwardly directed tongues 16 and one or more upwardly directed tongues 17 while the slit 15 toward the bottom may be such as to present an upwardly directed tongue.
I show additional upwardly directed tabs 18 and 19 near the bottom of the backer and that are usually for alternative use with the tab 15.
It will be seen that the article of merchandise 12 is removably suspended over the upwardly directed tongue 17 with the tag 13 held by the upwardly directed tongue 15.
I also desirably slit the backer at 20 at intervals around its circumference to better adapt it to removably fasten to the wreath or other festive decoration.
It will be understood that the wreath is r emovable and interchangeable with other wreaths of different appearance, the wreath being conveniently attached to the backer by ribbons or string through the slits 20.
The articles of merchandise and the cards are also interchangeable and optionally the slogan may be changed by the insertion of a large card 21, Figure 6, that may cover the old slogan and all or any desired portion of the space within the wreath.
The card 21 may then present the same slogan or a different slogan 22 with the same or with a different placement within the wreath. Optionally however the new card may be plain for presentation without any slogan of either advertising matter or articles of merchandise, either or both, preferably with a festive wreath framing the backer.
The large card 21 is provided with suitable tabs 17' and 15 on, opposite sides of the slogan for use in supporting the same or a different article of merchandise and printed card 13'.
The backer is preferably made in a way that adapts it to either stand on a sales counter or to hang on a wall, desirably directing the face of the display diagonally upward when placed upon a counter, diagonally downward when placed on a wall at a relatively high elevation or horizontally outward when hung on a Wall at near eye level.
As illustrated, the backer includes a cardboard easel 23 fastened permanently or removably to the rearward side of the backer l1 and adapted to fold up to lie wholly against the backer when the display structure is to hang flat against a vertical wall and adapted to unfold into an easel when the display structure is to be set upon a counter or table or to present the display structure diagonally downward from a vertical wall.
In Figures 2 and 4 the easel is shown folded while in Figures 5, 8 and 9 it is unfolded, Figures 5 and 8 showing it as used when presenting the display structure from a counter or table 24 while Figure 9 shows the unfolded easel hangingfrom a nail 25 in a wall 26 and presenting the face of the display diagonally down- Ward.
The easel 23 may desirably be formed from a single piece of heavy cardboard, the diagonal leg 27 comprising the center portion of the cardboard having a slit separation at sides and bottom from the front portion 28 of the easel with which it has a fold or crease connection at the top at 29.
The front 28 of the easel fastens removably or permanently to the backer and hinges at 30 with its bottom and tie member 31.
The bottom tie member carries a headed tongue 32 at its outer end, the tongue 32 being formed to interlock with the lower end of the leg at a suitable laterally slitted opening 33 when the easel is in its extended position and fitting within a suitable slit 34 near the upper end of the leg when the easel is folded.
The head or tongue 32 is provided with a perforation 37, preferably suitably reinforced for use in hanging up the easel and its associated backer and wreath over a nail in a vertical wall, as illustrated in Figure 9.
In some cases I may use the easel interchangeably with different backers and in this event provide the easel front 28 toward the bottom thereof with upwardly directed tongues 35 and 36 which are adapted to receive and support interchangeably the edge of different backers each of which may in turn carry at different times different wreaths or the like, with each wreath display including interchangeably diiferent slogans and different articles of merchandise and difierent cards.
Frequently however, I prefer to make the easel a permanent portion of the backer fastening the two together as by glue, with or without any tongue interlocking between the cardboards from which the two parts are made.
In view of my invention and disclosure variations and modifications to meet individual whim or particular need will doubtless become evident to others skilled in the art, to obtain all or part of the benefits of my invention without copying the structure shown, and I, therefore, claim all such in so far as they fall within the reasonable spirit and scope of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:--
A one-piece cardboard folding easel including a front, a leg slit therefrom at the sides and bottom, hinging therewith at the top, the leg having a slit near the top thereof and a tie hinging with and extending from the bottom of the front and including means for fastening to the rearwardly extending leg adapting the easel to stand when unfolded and to fold fiat against and fiat across the rearward faces of the front and leg and to be secured in this flat position by inserting the end of the tie into the slit near the top of the leg.
