GARMENT Filed Jan 50, 1928 INV NTOR ATTORNEY Patented May 14, 1929.
UNITED STATES MAX GOOD AN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
GARMENT.
Application filedj'anuary 30, 1928. vSerial No. 250,494.
The present invention relates to improvements in trousers and like garments.
Garments of the type mentioned produced in quantities for the general trade are made in standard sizes only. In order to avoid alterations in the waistline of the garment, it has been proposed heretofore to provide these garments with means for adjusting the width and tightness of the waist band and partly the waist portion, thereof. These constructions, however, do not take care of adjustments necessary in the seat portion of the garment, nor do they maintain theside seams of the legs of the trousers in their proper positions y when adjustments are made. In practiceit has been found that if in the constructions of the type mentioned the waist band and waist portion of the garment are decreased, the side seams of the legs-of the trousers are shifted backwards and, when said elements are increased, said side seams are shifted forwards, in both cases impairing'thewappearance and fit ofthe garment. In one particular type of these adjusting means, triangular gussets are inserted into the waist band and waist portion of the trousers adjacent the side pocketsthereof and combined with separable fastening means for adjusting the sizes of the gussets. This type of adjusting means is objectionable mainly on the ground that the gussets, in folded positions, give a bulky appearance to the garment, which is obviously objectionable. I
The main object of the present invention is to provide a simple and inexpensive means whereby not only the waist band and waist portion of the garment is adapted to be adjusted according to the size of the wearer but also the seat portion thereof, said means being constructed in such a'inanner that theseams of the leg portions of the garment are maintained in their normal positions, and, although in the form of plaits or gussets, do not impart bulkiness to the garment.
Another object of the invention is to provide an adjusting means of the character described inwhich the gussets or plait-sare incorporated in the side pockets of the garment and which allow of a great range of adjustment, is comparatively simple in construct-ion, inexpensive to manufacture and which may be applied to trousers of all types.
Withthese and other objects in view,
which will more fully appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the combination, arrange ment and construction of parts hereinafter described, pointed out in the appended claims and illustrated in the accompanyingdrawings, itbeing understood that many changes may be made in the size and proportion of the several parts and detailsof construction within the scope of the ap pended claims, without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention. e
One of the manypossible embodiments of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawin gs, in which I Figure 1 is a perspective view of the upper portion of a pair oftrousers, embodying theinvention, the adjusting means on the right side thereof being shown in their partly. extended positions in order to more clearly show the construction; Fig. 2' is a side elevation of the garment with the adusting means partly extended; Figs. 3 and 4 are inner views of the upper-portions, of i the trousers before being assembled, the adjusting means in Fig. 3,being, shown in folded position and in Fig. 4 in open position; F ig. 5 is an elevation of the blank of which the pocket is to be formed; and Fig.
6 is an elevation of the pocket in its finished state. i
Generally speaking, the invention consists in dividing the waistband of the trousers adjacent each side pocket thereof, providing a plait in each pocket and in :so combining the pockets with the divided portions of the waist band and the seat portion of the trons ers that the said waist band and portion may be adjusted according to the requirements. g
Referring now to the drawings, the numeral l0 indicates'a pair of trousers which,
excepting the features of the invention ap-.
plied thereto, is of the usual form The waist band 11 and waist portion 12 of the trousers are at thesides thereof divided from the waist band down to a point indicated at 1". In other words, the side seams 1st of the trousers extend from the bottom of the leg'portions thereof up to the point 13. The waist band is thus composed of a back section 15 and two front sections 16.- Each of the front sections extends from .the fly same, while the rear section of the waist band is attached in the usual manner to both back portions of the trousers and is provided with extensions 21 at both of its ends, which are adapted to overlap the front sections 16 of the waist band, as clearly appears in 3 and 4 of the drawings.
At these overlapping extensions of the rear section 15 of the waist band, the material of the trousers is extended beyond the side seams 14;, as clearly appears at 22 in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings, for a purpose hereinafter to be described.
Each of the side pockets of the trousers is made of a substantially oblongblank'23, folded at its longitudinal center line 24 and provided adjacent said center line with a seam to lend it some stiffness longitudinally. The pocket is folded along longitudinal lines 26 and 27 to provide a plait 28, as shown in Fig. 6 of the drawings. The pocket is provided with a line of stitches 29, extending from the lower end of the folding line 2d to a point 30 which coincides with the point 13 above referred to. \Vhen this line of stitches is applied to the pocket, the plait 28 is substantially triangular or wedge shaped. In inserting the pocket into the trousers, the plaited section 31 thereof is attached by a marginal line of stitches 32 to a rear portion 20 of the trousers along a side seam 14 up to the rear section 15 of the waist band and thence along the respective extension 21 of said waist portion. The other section 31 of the pocket is attached by a marginal line of stitches to the respective front portion 18'of the trousers along the side seam up to the respective front section 16 of the waist band, and thence along the top edge 33 of the said section 31 to the said section of the waist band, while the folded section 31 of the pocket is attached to the lining of the said front section 16 from the folding line 2 1 to the seam 25. In this manner the triangular plait is free to more with the section-15 of the said waist band.
In 7 order to prevent the pocket from wrinkling and to facilitate the folding of the plait as the trousers are adjusted, there are inserted into the section 31 of the pocket transverse stiffening means 84, extending from the line 32 of stitches to the folding line 27.
In order to permit the width of the gussets to be varied. according to the requirements, any suitable fastening means may be employed. In the case illustrated in the drai ings this means comprises a strap 35 at tached to the free end 36 of a front section 16 of the waist band and adapted to co-operate with a buckle 37, the latter being mounted adjacent the-respective extension 21 of the back section 15 of said waist band.
The operation of the device is as follows:
l/Vhen the plaits are in their folded posi tions the waist band, waist portion and seat of the trousers are of normal size. The ele ments are held in these positions by engaging the straps with the buckles. If the waist band and waist portion are too tight, the straps are disengaged from their buckles and the plaits extended, to be kept in extended positions by proper engagement of the straps with the buckles. As the plaits are being extended, the unattached ends of the front sections 16 of the waist band move toward the outer unattached ends of the extensions 21 on the-rear section 15 of the waist band, but the material of the pockets will not be exposed to view, it being covered by the extensions 22 of the trouser material. It is obvious that the waist band may also be decreased in size beyond that which it occupies in the normal positions of the folds above referred to. In making these adjustments not only are the sizes of the waist band and waist portion of the trousers varied, but the seat portion is also automatically increased or decreased in size, as the case may be. This is due to the fact that the plaits in the side pockets arelongitudinally arranged and it is also due to this arrangement of the'plaits that the side seams of the trousers remain in their proper positions when the waist band is enlarged or reduced in size.
It is obvious that, while herein separable fastening means in the form of straps and buckles have been described, any other type may be employed without departing from the invention. It is also obvious that, while herein the invention has been described in connection with trousers, it is applicable gen-' orally to bifurcated nether garments. In the appended claims the term trousers is intended to cover bifurcated nether garments of all types.
W hat I claim is:
1. A pair of trousers including front port-ions, rear portions and side pockets, said front portions and rear portions being vertically divided along the lines of said pockets, a divided waist band including front sections attached to the front portions of said trousers and a rear section attached to the rear portions of said trousers and having itsends projecting beyond said dividing lines so to underlie the front sections of said waist band, each pocket being provided with a longitudinal plait and being fastened to the respective front and rear portions of the trousers along the dividing line and also along its top edge but leaving the plait free to be extended and folded, and a set of extensible fastening means secured to each front section of the waist band and the adjacent portion of the rear section thereof, each pocket being provided with stiffening means along the plait and also'with stiffening means extending transversely of the pocket and being disposed adjacent the plait.
2. A pair of trousers including front portions, rear portions and side pockets said front portionsand rear portions being vertically divided along the lines of said pockets, a divided Waist band including front sections attached to the front portions of said trousers and a rear section attached to the rear portions of said trousers and having its ends projecting beyond said dividing lines so as to underlie the front sections of said Waist band, each pocket being extensible and fastened to the respective front and rear porand also along its top edge, and a set of extensiblc fastening means secured to each front section of said Waist band and the ad jacent portion of the rear section thereof,
each pocket being provided with stiffening means extending transversely of the pocket and being disposed adjacent the plait.
Signed at New York, in the county of New York, and State of New York, this 26th day of January, A. D. 1928.
