Description

E. GREASLY. KNITTED FRINGES.
No. 195,599. Patented Sept.25,18'77.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDMUND GREASLIQOF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN KNITTED FRINGES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 195,599, dated September 25, 1877; application filed May 9, 1877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDMUND GREASLY, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented an Improvement in Knitted Fringes, of which the following is a specification:
My invention relates to an improvement in that class of knitted fringes in which a series of knitted cords are combined with tufts held by the loops of the cords; and the object of my invention is to so secure the tufts that they cannot be as readily detached as those of ordinary fringes of the class to which my invention relates.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is front view of my improved fabric; Fig. 2, a transverse section, drawn to an enlarged scale.
In making ordinary knitted fringes, it has been the practice to attach the tufts to knitted cords, each cord being composed of one thread, in and by the loops of which the tufts were held, as shown in Fig. 3; but the hold of the cords on the tufts was very insecure, owing to the character of the loops made of one thread. To overcome this difficulty I make the cord of two threads, (1 and e, which, when knitted, are interlocked in the manner shown in Fig. 2. The tufts b are much more tightly bound by a cord of this character than by the usual single-thread cord.
It may be remarked that in making this fringe a series of strands are first knitted with the cords in a knitting-machine, and that as many of these strands as desirable are severed to form the tufts.
I claim as my invention, and as a new manufacture- A knitted fringe, having knitted cords of two threads, within the loops of which the tufts are confined, as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
EDMUND GREASLY.
