Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ROBERT IV. SCOTT, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
TRIMMING OR EDGING FOR FABRICS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 395,004, dated December 25, 1888.
Application filed August 24, 1888. Serial No. 283,627. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT W. SooTT, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Trimmings or Edgings for Fabrics, of which the following is a specification. 7
My invention consists of an improvement in or addition to the invention forming the subject of J. D. lWIoI-leys application for patent bearing even date herewith, Serial No. 283,611. The invention of the said J. D. Morley comprises a trimming for fabrics, consisting of a row of stitches formed on the fabric adjacent to the edge of the same, a second row of stitches pa allel with the first, but some distance from the edge of the fabric, and one or more threads, cords, or chains, (hereinafter for convenience simply called a thread or threads,) carried back and forth between the two rows of stitches and incorporated with the same.
The object of my invention is to provide an acceptable looped or scalloped edge for the trimming. This object I attain in the manner hereinafter set forth, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, which represents an enlarged diagram of apiece of fabric with trimming in accordance with my invention.
A represents the inner row of stitches along the edge of the fabric, and B the outer row some distance from said edge, both of these rows of stitching being in the present instance in the form of single-thread chains.
The crossing-threads D D, which connect the inner and outer rows of stitches, pass through and are bound by loops of said inner and outer rows, as shown, so that the needles whereby said rows of stitches are formed never pass through the crossing-thread, and there is thus no liability of cutting or wounding the latter.
Besides the threads connecting the inner and outer rows of stitches there is in my improved trimming an independent thread which is incorporated only with the outer row of stitches, B, the thread forming beyond said outer row of stitches a series of loops which constitutes a scalloped edge upon the trimming and adCs to the attractiveness of the same.
It will be evident that my invention maybe oarried out in connection with the other styles of trimming shown in the application of said J. D. Morley; that is to say, the inner and outer parallel rows of stitches may be doublethread lock-stitches instead of single-thread chain-stitches, as shown, and but one crossing-thread or more than two crossing-threads may be used to connect the two parallel rows of stitches.
Diiferent forms of machinery may be used in making my improved trimming; but as an instance of one machine which can be used for the purpose I may refer to my application bearing even date herewith, Serial No. 283,628.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent The within-described trimming for the edges of fabrics, said trimming consisting of a row of stitches formed on the fabric close to the edge of the same, a second outer row of stitches parallel with the first and some distance beyond the edge of the fabric, a thread carried back and forth between the two rows of stitches and incorporated with each, and a thread incorporated with the outer row of stitches only and forming loops beyond the same, all substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ROBERT W. SCOTT.
