Description

The invention relates to closures for boxes and aims to provide a lid for a box which can not be opened except by the manipulation of certain parts, being constructed and arranged so that they must be operated in a proper sequence; and as some of the locking parts are more or less hidden or obscure their operation by an uninitiated person is rendered extremely dicult.
This box may be of any desired type or size, and made from any material, either wood or metal, applicable for use as a jewel box, or as a receptacle for holding valuable articles.
One form of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawing, in which Fig. l is a perspective View of the box in closed position. Fig. 2 is a similar view with some of the parts shown in their open position. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view through the center of the box in its closed position. Fig. 4 is an end sectional view. Fig. 5 is a top view after the cover-slide #3 being removed. Fig. 6 is a top view of the lower top part or main cover #4. Fig. 7 is a cross sectional view of the cover-slide The box cover consists of two layers. The upper is cut diagonally in two and beveled as shown in Figs. l, 2 and 5. This diagonal cut forms #l and #2. One of the top sections, #l is fastened stationary to the lower or main cover #4. The other top section #2 is fulcrumed on a pivot #5, which slides through an elongated slotI #15 in the main cover #4. On the top of the two double angle cut top sections #l and #2 is a cover-slide, #3, attached to a dovetail cut slide #20 (see cross section Fig. 7) and slides in a correspondingly cut out slot #22, extended through top sections #1 and #2, and in the base having a retaining screw #10. |Ihis screw slides in the elongated slot #16, and prevents the cover-slide from falling out from the slot #22 when the top section #2 is revolved upon the pin #5 as shown in Fig. 2. The cover-slide locks the top sections in closed position when slid over towards the pivoted top section; it also serves as a cover to conceal the openings or iinger holes #12, #13.
In the sectional View Fig. 3 is a complete detail of all the corresponding parts given. The screw #6 inserted in the end wall (see also Fig. 2), has a reception #19 for the round head in the top section #1, also an elongated slot #17 in the main cover #4. This screw retains and holds the respective end of the lid down, and prevents it from moving when the box is closed. A pivoted metal lever #11 inserted between the r top section #1 and main cover #4, is operated from the opening or nger hole #12. In straight position with the box this lever locks the lid. When slid to one side as shown in Fig. 6, it clears the screw #6 and the lid can be slid. The other end wall has a latch or lock #8 inserted (Cl. 20G-1.5)
(see also end sectional view Fig. 4). This lock is concealed, and turns on a pivot #9. The top end of the lock is on a level with the main cover #4, and has a screw #7 attached to the top end of said lock with a reception slot #21 in the main cover #4.
The various steps in operation and opening my device will here be set forth as follows: First move the cover-slide #3 on top of the box back from the pivoted section #2, then swing out top section #2 sidewise half way round, in which position the screw #7 on lock #8 is brought under nger hole #13. The main cover #4 now must be slid out from the screw #7 to clear the lock #8, but before that can be done the 1ever #11 must be turned to one side yclearing the screw #6. To get hold of the lever: move back cover-slide #3 to uncover finger hole #12. The main cover #4 can now be slid to clear screw #7 attached to lool: #8. 'I'urn the lock #8 down (see dotted line Fig. 4), and the main cover #4 can now be slid back oi the screw #6 and turned to one side and the box is open. A reversal or" this operation closes and locks the box.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is,
1. The combination with a box, of a cover having sliding and pivotal connection with the box, a pivoted concealed lock inserted in one end wall of the box, having a screw attached to the upper end of the lock, with a reception slot in the main cover, said look to be operated from an opening, finger hole, in the pivoted movable top section as and for the purpose described.
2. The combination with abox, of a cover having sliding and pivotal connection with the box, a pivoted concealed metal lever (Fig. 6, #11) inserted on the main cover #4, covered by a stationary top section #1, coactive with a retaining screw at the end wall of the box, having reception slots in respective top section and the main cover, said metal lever to be operated from an opening, finger hole, in the top section fastened upon the main cover as and for the purpose described.
3. The combination with a box, of a cover having sliding and pivotal connection with the box, a cover-slide on the top of the box, upon the upper surface of top sections #1 and #2, serving as a cover to conceal nger holes in the top sections, and by an attached slide, having a receiving recess in said top sections, to lock them together when the box is in closed position, having a retaining screw in the base 0f the slide With reception slot for same in the main cover, to prevent the cover-slide from falling out when the pivoted top section is revolved.
