TABLE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed June 29, 1920. Serial No. 382,841.
To all whom it may cance'm:
Be it known that I, SAM H. DAVIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Tioga, in the parish of Rapides and State of Louisiana, have invented new and useful Improvements in Tables, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a novel construction of table, the principal object of the invention being to provide a secret drawer in the table leg for containing jewelry, money, and the like and provided with means for concealing the drawer by a part of the table. .Another object of the invention is to 1'0- vide the top of the table with book hol ing means which are actuated by a weight placed in one of the legs of the table. This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
In describing my invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views. and in which Figure 1 is a side view of a table constructed in accordance with my invention.
Fig. 2 is a plan view with parts broken Flg. 3 is a longitudinal sectional VlQW.
Fig. 4 is an enlarged fragmentary plan view showing a portion of the book holder moved outwardly to disclose the cover for the secret drawer.
Fig. 5 is a view of the drawer removed. In these views, the table A is shown as formed of the base 1, the legs 2 and the top I 3. The table top carries the book supporting jaws 4 and 5, the jaw 4 being stationary while the jaw 5 is slidably mounted on the top by having a rib 6 thereon engaging a slot 7 formed in the table top. This jaw is automatically held against the stationary jaw or against the book placed between said jaws by means of the weight 8 located 1n one of the legs and connected with the-movable jaw by the cable 9 which passes over the pulleys 10. As will be seen each jaw is formed of a jaw part and a flat shank part 11 and the shank of the stationary jaw, is formed separate from the jaw part and has its inner end engaging a groove 12 formed in said .jaw part and said shank is hin edl connected w th the jaw part as shown at 1%, this hlnge being so arranged that the shank may be swung outwardly across the table top to provide access to a hole 14 passing through the tabletop and into the leg. The part of the hole 1n the leg is preferably made of cyllndrical shape while the part in the table top is of square shape. A cylindrical drawer 15 is adapted to fit in the cylindrical part of the opening and the top part of the drawer is of square shape as at 16 to fit in the square upper end of the opening. This square part carries a small latch 17 for en gaging the keeper formed in the wall of the square part of the opening so as to hold the drawer in place. A spring 18 is placed in the bottomof the opening and tends to force the drawer upwardly and out of the opening when the latch member is withdrawn. The drawer 1s provided with a door 19 in its side which may be provided with a Suitable lock and 1f desired the latch may be made so that 1t can be locked. The movable shank 11 is also provlded with a lock, though this look should be a secret one and so arranged that 1t cannot be seen.
It will thus be seen that the drawer is hidden from view and from a casual inspection of the table the stationary jaw and its shank appear in one piece and rigidly attached to the table. Thus there is no evidence that the table contains the secret drawer. When access to the drawer is desired it is simply necessary to swing the shank outwardly to uncover the top of the drawer and then by withdrawing the latch the spring will force the drawer upwardly so that it can be readily removed andits door opened. The weight will also be hidden from view in the other table leg and will act to keep the movable jaw bearing against the books placed against the jaw. I
I may provide the top of the drawer with a handle 20 for facilitating the removal of the drawer or for use if the spring should fail 1to push the drawer from the opening in t e eg.
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of my invention will be readily apparent.
I desire it to be understood that I may make changes in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall within the scope of. the appended claims;
Patented Mar. 22, 1921.
What I claim is:
1. A table of the class described comprising a hollow leg, book holding jaws on the table top, each jaw consisting of a jaw part and a flat shank part, the shank part of the stationary jaw being hingedly connected to the jaw part, the table top having an opening therein communicating with the hollow leg and a drawer in the hollow leg with a top in said openin 2. A table of the class described comprising a hollow leg, book holding jaws on the table top, each aw consisting of a jaw part and a shank part, the shank part of the stationary jaw being hingedly connected in place, the table top having an opening therein under said movable shank and communicating with the hollow leg, a drawer in said hollow leg with its top in said opening and a spring in the leg pressing against the bottom of thedrawer.
3. A table of the class described comprising a hollow leg and a table top having an opening therein communicating with the upper part of the hollow, a drawer in said hollow leg with its upper part in said opening, a spring in the bottom of the hollow leg for forcing the drawer upwardly, a latch on the upper part of the drawer for holding the same in place, a pair of book holding jaws on the table top, and one jaw having a hinged portion normally covermg the opening in the table top.
4. A table of the class described comprising a le having a cylindrical opening in its longitudinal center and a table top having an opening therein of square shape communicating with the top of the cylindrical opening, a cylindrical drawer fitting in the cylindrical opening and having a square top engaging the square opening, a spring in the cylindrical opening for forcing the jaw upwardly, latch means for holding the drawer inposltion, a pair of jaws on the table top and one jaw having a hinged part thereon for normally concealing the top of the drawer from view.
5. A table of the class described compris ing a hollow leg, a table top having a slot therein, a stationary jaw on said top, a movable jaw having a portion engaging said slot, a weight in the hollow leg, and a cable connecting the weight to the movable jaw.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
