My invention relates to cosmetic containers and refers particularly to those containers adapted for carrying cosmetics in which the application requires a brush.

Certain cosmetics in paste and cake form, such as eyebrow, eyelash and lip cosmetics, reqiL re the use of a brush ii. their application and hence containers for these cosmetics should contain a suitable brush, the ordinary form being somewhat similar to that of a tooth brush.

One of the objections to those containers in which the brush is loosely carried is that if the brush compartment is large enough to allow the fingers of the user to grasp the brush handle in order to remove it, the brush moves within the container and soils the inner face of the container.

If the brush compartment is sufiiciently small to retain the brush from movement, it is difficult to insert the fingers to remove it from the container.

My invention overcomes all of the above mentioned and other objectionable features of the present employed devices and presents a device in which a guard, or cover, protects the brush from marring the container arid which, when the device is open, presents the brush handle in an extended position from the container, thus allowing its ready removal.

The new and advantageous features of my device will be evident upon a consideration of my specification and its accompanying drawing in which similar parts are designated by similar numerals.

Figure 1 is a perspective view of one form of the device of my invention.

Figure 2 is a top plan view of the device of Figure 1 in open position.

Figure 3 is a section through the line 3-3 of Figure 2, showing the elements in both open and closed position of the device.

Figure 4 is a section through the line 44 of Figure 2.

Figure 5 is a perspective view of the brush holding element of the device of Figure 1.

The particular form of the device of my invention shown in the accompanying drawing comprises a casing having the bottom 10, the sides 11 and 12, and the ends 13 and 14. I-Iingedly attached to the side 12 is a cover 15, having downwardly extended flanges 16, 17 and 18 abuttable respectively upon the side 11 and the ends 13 and 14. A spring catch 19 operates with the member 20 to maintain the device in closed position.

Within the casing is a plate, or platform 21 Serial No. 524,595

raised from the upper face of the bottom 10 by a downwardly extended peripheral flange 22 and two downwardly extended tongues 23, 23. The plate 21 has an elongated opening 24.

A brush holding element of spring, or resilient metal, consists of the element 25, which is fixedly attached to the under face of the plate 21 by means of the cut-out members 26, 26. The brush holder element 25 extends upwardly through an opening in the plate 21 into the member 2'7 normally positioned at an angle to the plate 21. One side 28 of the member 27 is turned down and the other side is turned into the cylindrical member 29.

A mirror, or reflective member, 33 is carried by the inner face of the cover 15.

A cosmetic, as a tablet of mascara, 30 is placed between the bottom 10 and the plate 21 accessible through the opening 24, and a brush is placed with the bristle portion 31 within the cylindrical member 29 and the handle 32 extending therefrom.

The operation of the device is as follows:-

When the device is closed, the brush is in a horizontal position within the device as shown in full lines in Figure 2 and in full lines in Figure 3, the cover 15 forcing the brush into this position against the resilient property of the material of the brush holder. When the cover is opened the resiliency of the material of the brush holder causes it to assume the positions shown in dotted lines in Figure 3 and in full lines in Figure e and hence the handle 32 is removed from within the casing to allow of the easy removal of the brush from the holder.

Resilient means other than that shown in the drawing may be employed to accomplish the described brush holder movement.

It will thus be seen that my invention presents a simple and effective means for allowing of the easy removal of the brush and overcomes the diiiiculties which would be incident if the brush remained within the casing when the latter is open.

I do not limit myself to the particular size, shape, number, arrangement or material of parts, particularly shown and described as these are given simply as a means for clearly describing the device of my invention.

What I claim is:

1. In a cosmetic container, in combination, a casing, a cover for said casing, a plate spaced from the bottom of said casing and a brush holder resiliently operated to be normally extended above said casing when the device is open casing, a cover for said casing,

and capable of placement within the device when it is in closed position.

2. In a cosmetic container, in combination, a casing, a cover for said casing, a plate spaced from the bottom of said casing and having an opening therein and a resilient brush holder normally extending above said casing when the de vice is open and capable of placement within the device when it is in closed position.

3. In a cosmetic container, in combination, a casing, a cover for said casing, a plate spaced from the bottom of said casing and a resilient brush holder carried by said plate and normally extending above said casing when the device is open and capable of placement within the device when it is in closed position.

4. In a cosmetic container, in combination, a casing, a cover for said casing, a plate spaced from the bottom of said casing and having an opening therein and a resilient brush holder carried by said plate and normally extending above said casing when the device is open and capable of placement Within the device when it is in closed position.

5. In a cosmetic container, in combination, a a plate spaced from the bottom of said casing and a resilient brush holder adapted to retain and partially in.- close the bristle portion of a brush while allowing the brush handle to extend therefrom, said brush handle being normally extended above said casing when the device is open and capable of placement within the device when it is in closed position.

6. In a cosmetic container, in combination, a casing, a cover for said casing, a plate spaced from the bottom of said casing and having an opening therein and a resilient brush holder adapted to retain and partially inclose the bristle portion of a brush while allowing the brush handle to extend therefrom, said brush handle being normally extend-ed above said casing when the device is open and capable of placement within the device when it is in closed position.

In a cosmetic container, in combination, a casing, a cover for said casing, a plate spaced from the bottom of said casing and a resilient brush holder carried by said plate and adapted to retain and partially inclose the bristle portion of a brush while allowing the brush handle to extend therefrom, said brush handle being normally extended above said casing when the device is open and capable of placement within the device when it is in closed position.

In a cosmetic container, in combination, a casing, a cover for said casing, a plate spaced from the bottom of said casing and having an opening therein and a resilient brush holder car ried by said plate and adapted to retain and par tially inclose the bristle portion of a brush while allowing the brush handle to extend therefrom, said brush handle being normally extended above said casing when the device is open and capable of placement within the device when it is in closed position.

A compact case comprising an upper cover portion, a lower body portion in hinged connection therewith, an intermediate base plate with the peripheral edges thereof turned down perpendicularly and engaging frictionally with the walls and bottom of the said lower body portion, a holder suitably spaced and arranged and penetrating the said intermediate base plate and in. frictional engagement therewith, and casing means with limited rotatable vertical motion from the intermediate base plate, the said casing means serving as an enclosure for the head of an application brush.

10. In a compact case comprising an upper cover portion, a lower body portion in hinged connection therewith and an intermediate base plate in spaced position from the lower body portion, a casing for the head of an application brush to be contained within the compact, com prising a hollow member with an opening at the inner end for insertion of the brush and a tongue member secured to the lower edge of the outer end of the said hollow member, the tongue member penetrating the intermediate base plate through a transverse slit and being adapted to offer limited vertical angular movement for the casing to make insertion and removal of the application brush from the lower body portion more convenient.
