Description

Patentd Dec. 26, 1 933 PATENT OFFICE- JAR Lawrence F. Cato and Walter-B. Repert, Dunki'k, N. Y., assignors of one-third to C. Walter Luce,
Dunkirk, N. Y.
Application November 9, 1932. Serial No. 641,&94
, 1 Claim.
The invention relates to a jar and more especially to .a lid clamp for jars or the like.
The primary object of the invention is the pro: 'vision O a clamp of this character, wherein a pair of double armed bails are swingingly connected to the body of the jar so that these may be swung over the lid and by a latch will clamp such lid and rmly hold the same tight upon the mouth of the jar so as to assure a complete scaling thereof. p
Another object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character, wherein the lid of a jar will be gripped at four points thereof so that when the same is made secure it will be firmly made fast for the sealing of the jar, the device being of novel form and is susceptible of use with' varying sizes and kinds of jars.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a device of this 'character which is extremely simple in construction, thoroughly reliable and eficient in its purpose, readily and easily applied to a jar, strong, durable,'and inexpensive to manufacture.
With these and other objects in View, the invention consists in the features of Construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described in detail, illustrated in the accompanying drawing which 'discloses the preferred embodiment of the invention, and pointed out in the claim hereunto appended.
In the accompanying'drawing:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a jar with its lid thereon showing the device constructed in accordance with the invention applied thereto and making fast the lid upon the jar.
Figure 2 is a fragmentary elevation looking to-' ward one end of the device.
Figure 3 is a top plan View.
Figure 4 is a fragmentary vertical -sectional vew. I i
Similar reference characters indicate corre sponding parts throughout the several views in the drawing. r
Referring to the drawing in detail, A designates generally a jar preferably constructed from glass although it may be made from any other suitable material and its body. 10 forms a container for fruit, preserves or the like. Thebody at its upper end is formed with a contracted neck 11 having a marginally fianged mouthend 12 closed by a removable lid 13. The lid when in closing position upon the mouth end 12 rests 'upon a gasket 14, in this instance rubberand of circular formation in cross section so that when pressure is applied against'the lid 13 the gasket 14 held (Cl. 215-89) A in the seat 15 in the mouth edge will effectually seal the jar as will be obvious.
Engaged about the' contracted neck 11 next to the flange 12 and underlying ,the latter is a neck wire 16,the same being tied in place. Connected'with the wire 16 at diametrically opposite points with relation to 'the jar A are bail-like clamps 17, each formed from a single length of wire bent on itself to provide the spaced arms 18, these having eye ends 19 loosely en- 'gaged about the wire 16. The arms 18 are further bent to form the clamping jaws 20 which impinge against the outer sideof the lid 13 and by reason of the inherent resiliency when the said bails 17 are fastened in clamping position the lid will be forced downwardly to have the gasket 14 -seal the mouth end of the jar. It will be obvious that by reason of the spacing ;of the arms 18 of each bail the' pair of the latter will 'have a four-point contact with the lid 13 as is disclosed in Figures 2 and 3 of the drawing.
One of the bails has swingingly connected therewith a. latch 21, the same being formed from a single length 'of wire having the terminal eyes 22 loosely embracing the bail 17 with which it is y connected. This latch 21 has the' bights 23 and 24 therein and a finger extension 25 respectively, the bight 23 being adapted to receive and funcj tion asva keeper for the other bail when'the latchis swung into a position to engage said bail as is apparent 'from Figures 1 to 4 inclusive of the drawing. The extension 25 permits the;
,manual manipulation of such latch 21 while the bight 24 *of said latch permits loose. engagement of the latter when bridging the lid 13 and attach- '90 ing suchlatch with the said other bail. It should be obvious that when the extension 25 is pulled upwardly the latch 21 can be released and the !bails swung outwardly and downwardly to free the lid 13 for its removal from the jar A.
v What is claimed is: [The combination with a jar having a, separable lid and a flanged neck, of. a wire engaged about the neck beneath its fiange, double arm clamping with the other bail'and terminating in a gri extending beyond said bights.
