JAR CAP TIGHTENER Filed Sept. 9, 1931 Zajeze afierzob,
INVENIOR o ATTORNEY Patented Dec. 19, 1933 JAR CAP TIGHTENER Eugene 0. French, Norway, Mai ne Application September 9, 1981. Serial No. 561,949
1 Claim.
This invention relates to means for fastening the covers on fruit jars of all kinds that are used for packing or storing fruit, preserves, meats, vegetables and the like and the object of the invention is to provide a fastening device which while being simple in constructionis efficient in operation.
With this object in view the structure consistsof a covercast in a usualmanner except that at the center of the outer surface thereof there are provided two semi-circular ridges which are zoncentrically arranged upon the cover and abut each other at their ends. The upper edges otthe ridges are inclined and each inclined edge is provided with three notches. One notch is located at the lower end of the ridge, a notch is located midway between the ends of the ridge and a notch is located at the upper end of the ridge. A bail is pivotally mounted upon the body of the jar in a usual manner and its intermediate portion may be engaged in the said notches so that when the handle of the bail is swung the cover is drawn down in close contact with the mouth of the jar or with the packing which is interposed between the mouth of the jar and the edge of the cover. In the event that the cover does not fit properly upon the jar when the bail is in one set of notches the cover may be turned so that the bail may be brought into another set of notches and may be drawn down as hereinbefore indicated to effectually close the mouth of the jar and retain the contents thereof in air tight condition.
In the accompanying drawing:--
Figure 1 is a side elevational view showing the cover applied to the mouth of a jar.
Figure 2 is a similar view taken at a right angle to the view shown in Figure 1. a
Figure 3 is a transverse sectional view of the same.
Figure 4 is a top plan view of the cover.
Figure 5 is a detailed side elevational view of the intermediate portion of the cover.
Figure 6 is a diagrammatic view showing the of the jar 1. Said cover is of circular form and is cast in a single body. The cover 4 is dome shaped and provided around its center with two upstanding circular flanges 5. Said flanges are concentrically arranged upon the cover and joined with each other at their ends. Each flange 5 is provided with an inclined upper edge 6 and each edge is provided with onelower notch '7, an intermediate notch 8 and an upper notch 9.
'Said notches are located at equal distances apart along the inclined edges 6 of the flanges. The notches 7 of the two flanges are diametrically opposite each other and at the same level. The notches 8 are diametrically opposite each other and at the same level along the inclined edges of the flanges and the notches 9 are similarly located with relation to each other When tightening the cover 4 upon the mouth of the jar the intermediate portion of the bail 3 is seated in one of the sets of notches of the flanges 5. The handle 2 is then swung down whereby the bail 3 is moved in a downward direction and the cover 4 is drawn toward the mouth of the jar. Should the cover fail to seat tightly upon the mouth of the jar the handle 2 30 is swung in an upward direction whereby the bail 3 is lifted out of said notches and then the cover 4 may be turned so that another set of the notches may be brought under the intermediate portion of the bail. After this adjustment has 5 been made the bail and handle may be moved in a downward direction as hereinbefore explained and the cover is drawn to seating position upon the mouth of the jar. This manipulation may be repeated until such time as the cover effectually seals the mouth of the jar.
Having described the invention what is claimed is:
A jar cover and fastener of which the former comprises a convex lid having an annular up- 5 standing flange positionedon the top face thereof and concentric therewith, said flange having its upper edge inclined upwardly inopposite directions from diametrically opposite points with notches formed at the peaks of the inclinations
