Patented Sept. 26, 1933 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 7 Claims.
This invention relates to a segmental grinding wheel of the ring, cup or cylinder type commonly used for plain surfacegrinding.
The chief object of this invention is to simplify the construction of a grinding wheel of the aforesaid general character and simultaneously incorporate all of the advantages of a so-called complete peripheral grinding structure with the advantages of the substantially complete or slotted peripheral grinding structure and omit the disadvantages of both types inherent therein by reason of their constructions. No claim is made to the broad combination of a grinding wheel base or segment supporting plate and a plurality of segments peripherally arranged and wedgingly anchored to said plate.
The invention is specifically directed to the particular structural arrangement of the beforementioned parts whereby certain advantages hereinafter pointed out more in detail, are obtained.
Another feature of the invention consists in the formation of an imperforate grinder wheel segment which has a base with a central angle other than the grinding portion whereby substantially segment to segment contact is obtained for anchorage and substantially slotted segmental arrangement is obtained for grinding, the latter permitting the wheel to free itself from the worn dust and metal ground by the wheel. As a result of this freeing action, the face of the wheel requires substantially no dressing but .will progressively wear down until the wearing face is positioned too close to the supporting portion of the wheel for grinding with safety.
Anotherfeature of the invention consists in forming the supporting base with but a single inclined face for wedging anchorage of the segments, forming the segments with buta single inclined face for wedging anchorage thereof and associating both inclined faces with wedging means having oppositely inclined faces, whereby a single anchorage of a single wedge is adapted to anchor a single segment. r
45 Another feature of the invention consists in the addition of a retaining counter-balanced segment engaging band. r v i The full nature of the invention will be more clearly understood from the accompanying drawing and the following description and claims:
In the drawing, Fig. 1 is a face view of the grinder wheel. Fig. 2 is a central sectional view taken on line 2-2 of Fig. 1 and in the direction 5 of the arrows. Fig. Sis a face view of one-of i the segments. Fig. 4 is a sectional view: taken on the segments together in peripheral relation.
line 4-4 of Fig. 3 and in the direction of the arrows. Fig. 5 is a side elevation of one of the segments.
In the drawing 10 indicates a base plate which 7 has a groove forming structure 11 rigid therewith 0 and herein shown integral. The groove forming structure includes a flange l2 and a flange 13, the two being concentrically arranged to provide a groove therebetween having the base or root face 14, an inner face 15, and an outer face In the present form of the invention, face 15 is shown inclined outwardly and face 16 is shown parallel to the axis. In other words, it is of cylindrical formation while face 15 is of conical formation.
Each segment includes a base portion 17 and a grinding portion 18 havingthe grinding face 19 remote from the base. The base portion 17, as appears clearly in Fig. 3, has a-central angle that is less than the central angle of the grinding portion 18. This is because the radial face 21 of the base 17 is parallel tothe face 20 of the grinding portion 18 although the base and grinding portions have one curved surface 22 with a common radius. The opposite surface of the grinding portion is curved as at 23 and in the present form of the invention but one curved portion of the base is flared outwardly away from the grinding portion. Herein the inner curved faces of the grinding segment base have concentric curvatures of dissimilar radii by reason of the conical formation of surface 24.
A suitable number of segments. are arranged end to end andrform a substantially cylindrical grinder of the ring or cup type and by reason of the lateral projection of the base beyond the grinding portion of the segment, the grinding portions are spaced from each other by the slots 30, thus permitting the wheel to free itself from debris that occurs in operation.
All of the segmentsare identical, thereby reducing the cost of production thereof to a minimum. A wedge member 25 is of arcuate character and has substantially the same central angle as the segment base. Each wedge includes inclined faces that are of partial conical character, one face 26, and herein the outer'face, being of substantially the same slope or inclination as face 24 of the segment while the opposite and herein inner face 27 of the wedge has sub- 105 stantially the same inclination as the adjacent inclined inner face 15 of the inner flange. Each wedge maybe suitably drawn into the groove for wedging each segment in position and looking all Herein the simplest form of such means is illustrated and includes a bolt 28 that passes through an opening 29 in the portion 11 of'the groove. Each wedge has a threaded opening 31 that receives the bolt.
While the invention is illustrated as having all of the inclined faces positioned within the inner peripheral outline of the grinding face, the structure maybe readily reversed Without departing from the invention. The advantage of having a clamping structure positioned within the inner peripheral outline of the clamping face is that the overall dimension of the supporting base is reduced to a minimum and since substantially the entire interior of the wheel is not uti lized for any purpose except for mounting the wheel on a rotating shaft, this space in the present form of the invention is utilized for the clamping or mounting of the segments upon the base.
When the segments are initially assembled and to prevent any tendency to wobble or wiggle, there is provided a clamping band, the same being indicated at 40. The band may be suitably formed but is of splitformation and includes the end anchoring elements 41 and 42. A fillister screw 43 extends through the end 41 and has threaded engagement as at 44 with the end clamp 42.
To maintain the dynamic balance of the wheel, the band supports in diametrical relation to the clamping structure, a counterweight 45 that herein is shown anchored by the rivets 46 to the band. Likewise, the wheel includes a plurality of spaced recesses 47 and suitable weighting is positioned therein as by pressing in a lead weight 48 or the like to dynamically'balance the wheel base.
To obtain the desired tensile strength at minimum cost the base is made of brass or bronze.
