Description

PRACTICE BOMB Filed Jan. 4; 1932 Patented Aug. 1, 1933 lUNITED s'r-.xrizsv PATENT OFFICE 1 claim,
v(Granted under the Act of Marchv 3, 1883, as amended April 30, 1928; 370 O. G. 757) My invention relates to a practice bomb for aviators and others engagingin training or practicing for actual service.
An object of the invention is to provide an 5 inexpensive substitute for the regular or war time bomb heretofore used while training or practicing for'actual service.
Another object of the invention is to provide a practice bomb` composed of a material that will fragment on impact of the bomb withou causing damage to'the object hit.
AA further object of the invention is'to provide a bomb that will leave a visual indication of its place of hit on a target.
With the above and other objects 'in view the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be described more fully hereinafter.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying 20 drawing forming a part of this specification in which like reference.I characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views, and
in which Fig. 1 is a view, partly in section, of a practice bomb constructed in accordance with the present invention, and
Fig.2 is a similar view of a slightly modified construction.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, the body 5 of the practice bomb is of a streamline tubular configuration and is composed o f a frangible mate'ial, such as celluloid or a suitable composition that will fragment upon impact of the bomb with water` or any solid object. Suitable vanes 6, forming the tail portion of the bomb, are secured Vto the body in any desirable manner.
In the form illustrated in Fig. l, the nose, that is preferably made of the same material as the body, consists of a ball-shaped member 'I that is partially inserted in the hollow body and secured therein by a suitable adhesive 8. The nose is lled through an opening 9, that is closeable r by a shield 10, with water, a coloring matter,
or a smoke-prdducing composition 11.
When the bomb impacts with a deck of a ship or other solid object, the nose becomes ruptured` releasing its contentswhich spread over the object hit leaving a visual indication at the place where the bomb struck. Ifl the nose is lled with water, awet spot is formed, and if'fllled with a coloring matter, a stain is left on the object. Should tle bomb fail to hit the object in- 60 tended, but instead fall into water, it will make a splash, permitting itspoint of impact being raked by observers. Ifa smoke producing composition is used in the bomb, it will cause smoke when it lands in\water.
Fig. 2 shows a vslightly modied form of bomb in which the-water, coloring matter, or smoke producing composition is contained in a compartment withinthe bomb body adjacent to the nose.
In this instance the nose is semi-spherical inl 70,
shape and is secured to the body in such a mann er that they will overlap, as may be seen in Fig. 2, .and are secured together by a suitable ad- .hesive 8. In Athis case, as in the preferred form,
the nose is ruptured upon impact and pulls free of the body allowing the wall thereof to spread releasing the contents of the compartment over the objecthit.
It will be understood that the above descrip, tion and accompanying drawing comprehend only the general and preferred embodiment of my invention and that various changes in construction, proportion and arrangement o f parts may be made within the scope of the appended .claim without sacrificing any of the advantages of my invention. v
The invention described herein'may be manufactured and usedby or for the Government of the United States of America fo`r governmental purposes without the payment of any royalties thereon or therefor.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
A practice bomb including a fragile body, a fragile nose member overlapping and secured to the'body to normally restrain the same from spreading, said nose being adapted to -become torn asunder from the body solely by externalv Aforce dueto impact, and a reservoir within the body adapted to be ruptured when the nose is freed from the body.
