Description

B. JONES.
CRANE.
No. 191,437. Patented May 29,1877.
, UNITED STATES PATENT QFFIoE.
BYRON JONES, OF KENDALLVILLE, INDIANA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF HIS RIGHT TO THOS. L. GRAVES, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN CRANES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 191,437. dated May 29, 1877; application filed May 3, 1877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BYRON JONES, of Kendallville, in the county of Noble and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cranes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Fignre l is a perspective view of my improved crane, and Fig. 2 is a detached sectional view thereof.
Corresponding parts in the two figures are denoted by like letters.
This invention relates to a certain improvement in cranes; and it consists of a weighted serrated pawl suspended directly above the elevating or hoisting rope pulley, and having an arm or handle provided with a rope or other suitable medium for releasing the pawl, substantially as hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the annexed drawing, A refers to a rotating upright or post, suitably braced in position by the braces or stays ac. B is a horizontal beam fastened to and extending outwardly from the post A, and also braced by the diagonal brace b. Upon the beam B,
at its extreme outer end, is a pulley, 0, around which passes the elevating or hoisting rope d. Upon the beam B is firmly fastened a bow or frame, 6, disposed directly over the pulley 0. Within this bow or frame is hung a weighted toothed pawl, O, which, by its own gravity and the weight on the elevating or hoisting rope d, is caused to engage and clamp said rope down upon the pulley c, to hold the block of ice or other weight in an elevated or suspended position. To an arm or handle, f, of the pawl O is attached a cord or rope, 9, extending down within convenient reach of the operator, for releasing the pawl and liberating the hoisting or elevating rope.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
The weighted serrated pawl 0, having the arm or handle f, provided with a cord or rope, or other suitable medium, g, for releasing it, in combination with and suspended directly above the hoisting-rope pulley, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I hereunto affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
BYRON JONES.
