)Wfi' UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
AUGUST IRMLER, on GARDENVILLE, YORK FIRE-ESCAPE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 355,451, datedJ'auuary 4, 1887.
Application filed August 18, 1886.
T0 aZZ'whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, AUGUST IRMLER, a citizen of the United States, residing in Gardenville, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fire-Escapes, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to produce at a comparatively small cost and of simple construction a strong and effective fire-escape, all of which will be fully and clearly hereinafter described, shown, and claimed by reference to the accompanying drawings,in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the whole device, showing its construction and the mode of operating it. Fig. 2 is an enlarged crosssection through one of the joints by which the.
poles or bars are secured together. Fig. 3 is an enlarged side elevation of a portion of the device; and Fig. 4 represents a longitudinal section through two of the joint-tubes in line X X,Fig.2,showingthree ol' the bars connected therewith. v
This invention, when complete and connected together, consists of a single pole or bar, made up of a series of smaller bars, 1. and 1, securely jointed together; The upper end is provided with a friction-roller, 2, so thatit may be run easily up against the side of the building. At the top end is one or more books, 3, for the purpose of grappling overa window-frame or other convenient place. A pulley, 4, is securely fastened to the upper end ofthe pole, over which one end of a rope, 5, passes, and is provided with a basket or car, 6, for raisingor lowering persons or property, and the other end, 7, is for the use of the firemen or person operating it. v The bars 1 and 1 are secured or jointed together by joints or small tubes 8 1112 13, rigidly secured thereto by bolts or rivets 9. The upper bar, 1, to which the rope, pulleys, and hooks are attached, is preferably made in one solid piece. Each of the bars 1 and 1 is provided' with the sleeve or square tube 8, &c., as above mentioned, which is located at or near the center of each bar, (see Figs. 3'and Selitll No. 211,150. (No model.)
4,) and is rigidly secured by the rivets orbolts 9, as above mentioned. v
10 represents the thumb-screws for securing the parts 1 and 1 rigidly together when in place.
The operation of the invention is as follows: The first portion, 1, is set with the frictionroller 2 resting against the building and is pushed upward, and a portion, 1, is put in place and rigidly, secured by the thumbscrew 10. The sleeve or tube 8 receiving the end 14 of the part 1, (shown by dotted lines in Fig 3,) and the tube 11 receiving the lower end, 15, of the part 1 also the upper end, 16, of the part 1, &c., (all shown by dotted lines in said Fig. 3,) these pieces 1 and 1 are thus put together one at a time until the required elevation is reached. Three or more guyropes, 17, 18, and 19, are used to steady the device as it is being extended upward, which ropes are handled by the operators, as shownin Fig. 1. The ropc'5 and 7 is also carried up at the same time. When the hooked portion 3 has reached the desired elevation, the .device is turned so as to enable the hook to grasp over a window-frame or any object adapted to hold it. The basket 6 is then drawn up and is ready for the work of rescuing persons or property.
The sections 1 and 1 may be made square,
as shown, or round, or of any other shape adapted for the purpose.
For small fire'escapes the friction-roller 2 may in some cases be dispensed with.
I claim as my invention A pole for a fire-escape, consisting of a series of sections, 1*, 1, and l, secured together by joint-sleeves 8 11 12 18 and thumb-screws, in combination with a grapplinghook, a frictionroller, 2, and a pulley for receiving a rope for raising 'or lowering a basket or car, substantially as and for the purposes described.
AUGUST lR-MLER.
