Description
NIVIED STATES PATENT OFFICE. f
JOI-IN P. BRINKERHO'FF, OF: BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
MACHINE FOR MAKING SPOONS.
Speccaton'of Letters -Patent No. 22,060, dated November 16, 1858.
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, JOHN I). BRINKER- HOFF, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, h'aveinvented a new and improved machine for manufacturing spoons, knives, forks, and other articles that may be constructed by being swaged or struck up from metal plate; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the yannexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1,is a longitudinal central section of my invention. Fig. 2, is a plan or top view of dit-to, the top plate of the head in which the roller is placed being removed. Fig. 3, is a detached view of the rotating and reciprocating dies, the latter being bisected vertically and transversely. Fig. 4, is a detached longitudinal vertical and central section of the rotating and reciprocating dies. Fig. l5, is a detachable plan or top view of the reciprocating die.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
To enable those skilled in the art to fully understand and construct my invention I will proceed to describe it.
A, represents a framing on the upper part of which a b ed plate C, is placed. To the bed plate C, near one end two upright plates a, a, are secured, the upper ends of the plates a, being connected by a cross plate b. Between the upper parts of the plates a, a, la roller or shaft D, is placed, and on the shaft D, a projecting surface E, is formed, said surface corresponding in form to the article to be manufactured and having a circumferential position on the roller, the projection serving as a male die, see Figs. l, 2, 3 and 4. The edges or corners of the die E, are made as sharp or `angular as may be to form good cutting edges. In the drawings the die E, is in the form of a spoon and therefore is intended to assist in the manufacture of the same.
In each upright plate a, a bearing o, is placed, said bearings resting on the journals of the shaft D, a set screw (l, passes through the cross plate one near each end, said screws acting on the bearings c, c, see Fig. l.
On the bed plate C, two longitudinal ways e, e, are formed or secured, and f, f, are two grooved rollers that are placed on the ways e, e, and connected by longitudinal bars g, g.
a longitudinal opening z', in the block or bolster, see Figs. 1 rand 3.
I, is an arm which is attached to a shaft that passes transversely through the bolster F, below the bar H, and has a lever J, attached to one end.
K, is a screw shaft placed horizontally on the bed plate C, and having one end fitted in a nut 7c, attached to the bolster F. The opposite end of the screw shaft'has a bevel pinion Z, on it, which pinion gears into a corresponding pinion mi, on a shaft L, on the bed plate. The shaft L, is rotated from the driving shaft by proper gearing, and the roller or shaft D, is operated from the shaft L, through the medium of gearing 0.
The operation is as followsz. The spoons are formed from metal plate of a suitable thickness. Motion being given the driving shaft, the plate is allowed to pass between the roller D, and bolster F, and the edges of the die E, in connection with the edges of opening 7L, will as the shaft D, turns and the bolster F, is drawn along, cut a piece of metal from the plate corresponding of course, to the form of the die and opening. This piece of metal is swaged into the proper form by the dies F, G, and the die G, is adjusted in the opening h., of the block or bolster to a greater or less height according to the thickness of the plate from which the articles are out. IVhen the article has been formed or swaged and the die D, has passed out of the opening 71., of the bolster, the operator depresses the outer end of lever J, and the arm I, will throw up the die G, and the article will be thrown out the opening L. The bolster F, and shaft D, are then moved back to their original position by reversing the movement of the driving shaft, or by any proper means and the operation is repeated.
It will be understood of course that the dies are of hardened steel, as is usual in such eases. The bolster F, is also of the same material.
operation. I therefore do not claim broadly such operation, but 15 I do claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
The arrangement and combination of the rolling die E, die G, bolster F, opening (la) and bar ILI7 as and for the purposes herein 20 shown and described.
JOHN P. BRINKERHOFF.
