J. S. FINGER SCARF o R E m M v N O 0 EF v 4 I 5 7 A N e. v "m w a,
Patented May 2, 1933 UNITED STATE-S PATENT OFFICE JULES s. FINGER, on NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR To" NUSBAUMVK'NITT'ERS 11m, A
CORPORATION or NEW YoItKf SCARF Application filed July 16, 1932. Serial No. 622,861.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements 1n a scarf-blouse.
The invention has for an Ob ect the construction of a scarf-blouse which is charac-- 5 terized by being constructed of sheet material adapted to readily stretch in the width so as to be engageable around the body of a person in a manner so that the material crosses under the arms.
As a further object of this invention it is proposed to construct the sheet material with various ornamental designs so that the scarf-blouse may match different wearing apparel. v p
Furthermore, as another object of this in vention it is proposed to construct the sides of the scarf-blouse straight calculated when worn to cause the material to cross under the arms and form a good fit around ones body.
Furthermore, it is proposed to construct the sheet material of a width so that the scarf-blouse extends slightly around the shoulders and when worn forms short sleeves.
A still further object of this invention is the provision of means for detachably securing the device upon a person.
Still further it is proposed to provide an arrangement whereby the securing of the device upon aperson may be varied or controlled in a manner so as to determine the point of crossing occurring under the arms and thus controlling the amount of exposure under the arms. I Still further, this invention has for an object the construction of an article as mentioned which is simple and durable and Which may be manufactured and sold at a reasonable cost.
For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference Will be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, and to the appended claims in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth. 1
In'the accompanying drawing forming a material part of this disclosure:
Fig. 1 is a plan view of a scarf-blouse constructed according to this invention.
Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken on the line 22 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a sectional View taken on the line 33 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4c is a perspective view showing the article partially engaged upon a wearer.
Fig. 5 shows the article upon. a wearer posed to particularly disclose the construction beneath the arms.
Fig. 6 shows the device upon a wearer in no different position than that shown in Fig. 5.
Fig. 7 is a fragmentary view similar to a portion of Fig. 1 illustrating a modification of the invention.
The scarf-blouse according to this inven- 65 tion comprises a sheet of material 10 adapted to stretch in the width and of a width adapted .for extending across the shoulders, and if so desired slightly down the arms, and the sides 11 of said sheet being finished off by a selvage or the like edge. The ends 12 of the sheet are finished off by selvage or by turning the ends upon the sheet and securing them down by stitches 13 or by any other means. The sheet 11 preferably should be of rectangular shape as shown in Fig. 1, and particularly it is a feature, that the sides 11 to be straight for, the purpose of proper drawing of these edges beneath the arms when the article is worn. The sheet 10 is formed with a central opening 14 adapted to allow the head of a person to pass so that the sheet may be engaged across ones shoulders as clearly shown in Fig. 4.. The edges of the opening 14 should be finished, preferably by a selvage edge construction or by any other method and may also be decorated with suit-- able trimming. The material 10 preferably should be knitted so that it is capable of readily stretching in the direction before pointed out. Preferably the material should be constructed with a knitted design shown in the drawing by a transverse central darkened area 15 and the triangular portions 16 on opposite sides of this area. While just this particular design has been shown various others may be constructed. If desired, printed material may .be used which of course reduces the manufacturing price 101 the fastening elements 18 and 19.
of the article. The sheet 1. may also be constructed of towelling material and when thus constructed is readily adapted for beach use.
A means is provided for holding the scarfblouse in place upon a wearer and comprises means for detachably securing the corners of the same ends together. In detail, this meanshasbeen shown to comprise eyes 18 secured upon one ofthe corners and engageable by hooks 19 secured upon other of the corners. Any other securing means such as snap fasteners, buttons etc. may also be used.
The use of the article may be readily understood by inspecting Figs. 46 inclusive.
To wear it, it is first necessary that the head be placed through the opening 14: and the ends 12 be located respectively at the front and the rear. The article is shown in this condition in Fig. 4. Then either the front or the back should be tied around the waist or secured around the waist by the aid of Thereafter the other side should be correspondingly engaged about the body.
In Fig. 5 the rear side of the garment has been shown tied at the front 21. The front side of the garment necessarily was tied around the back of the person. It should be noticed sides of the sheet crossed beneath the arms 22. It is advisable that the sides 11 be straight so that proper tension exists along their complete lengths and thus insures the garment from hanging loosely or portions thereof hanging loosely. In other words, the garment snuggly engages against the body beneath the arms.
In Fig. 6 the front of the garment is shown engaged around the back of the person and necessarily there tied or secured together by the fastening elements 18 and 19. It should be noticed that the sheet 10 is of sufiicient width so as to extend partially down the arms indicated by reference numeral 23 so that the blouse has short sleeves.
In Fig. 7 a variation of the invention has been disclosed in which provision is made for changing or controlling the crossing of the sides of the sheet beneath the arms at the points 22 in Fig. 5. Sometimes it is desirable according to the taste of the wearer that the crossing take place closer to the arm pits or further away. Non-elastic straps 25 are slidably engaged through the bent edges 12 of the material 10 and along their lengths are provided with fastening elements 26 and 26 adapted to co-act with complementary fastening elements 27 and 27 upon the ends of the material 10 in a manner so that the material 10 may be stretched to predetermined relations. \Vhen the article is worn it is the straps 25 which are tied around the body and the material 10 will be stretched only as controlled by the engagement of the fastening element 27, 27, and 26, 26'. In other words, the ends of the material 10 may assume various angles crossed beneath the arms and so obtain the object sought. To increase the angle of crossing the ends of the material 10 should be stretched further, from the position shown in Fig. 7 and thus maintained by proper engagement of the fastening means on the straps 25.
When it is so desired, the device may be constructed from towelling material and one of the ends engaged over the head so as to act as a head protector and be particularly adapted for beach use.
\Vhile I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise construction herein disclosed and the right is reserved to all changes and modifications coming within the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent is 1.
