Operation of the push button 20 permits air to enter the cylinder and actuate the piston. The valves are held in their operated position as long as desired to hold the press closed by mechanism not pertinent to this invention. To open the press, the lever 21 is operated to release the valve holding means so that the press will open up under the influenceof the countersprings 16 and 17.
The construction thus far described forms no part of this invention.

There are various typesof neck band holders. `In some types of neck bands, a movable clamp member or loop 24 is yused to press the neck band against the base or block of the neck band holder.v In another type, the neck band is merely buttoned around the block. This block may also .have the usual expanding clamp. As the operation of the various types of neck band holders is well known and as the construction of a neck band holder is not pertinent to this invention, further description'is thought to be unnecessary. v
In the illustrated embodiment of my invention, the yoke lever 5 is bifurcated or double and the head 2 has ears 25 and 26 at its ends in which is xed,.as by keys 27, a shaft 28, this shaft extending lengthwise of the head along the median line thereof, and the yoke is provided with brackets 29 and 30 at the ends of the bifurcations, these brackets being loosely mounted on the shaft 28 to permit the shaft and the headto move endwise and also to have a slight compensating rocking movement. Such rocking movement of the head is desirable to permit the head to move relatively to the yoke and compensate for different thicknesses of the work overlying dierent portions of the buck so that the head presses uniformly throughout the pressing face of the buck.
The rocking or compensating movements of the head are resisted by spring connections between the brackets 29 and 30 and the head.

The stud 33 is connected at its lower end by apivoted joint as a ball and socket joint 33a and is likewise connected to the bracket 29 or 30hy a similar joint 29a, the latter being provided by aspherical boss 296, Figure 7, on the seat 31a for the spring 31 or 32. The means formoving the head laterally is here illustrated as cam members 36 and 37, the cam member`36 ybeing fixed to the shaft 28 as by a key 38 and the cam member "37 being mounted to rock about the shaft 28 and being heid from endwise movement by a spacing sleeve 39 surrounding the shaft 28 and interposed between the cam member v37 and the bracket 29. The cam members have coacting cam faces or lifts on their opposing sides. The cam member 37 is provided with a rock arm 40 and when vthis arm 40 isl rocked, the Y. cam face of the member 37 will thrust against and ride up the cam face of the member 36 thus shifting the head laterally. rThis lateral movement is against the returning action of a spring 41 interposed between the cam member 36 and the bracket 30.
The rock arm 40 is actuated during the closing ofthe press by a link 42eXtending lengthwise of the lever 5 or between vthe bi` furcations thereof, and pivoted at its'frontV end at 43 to thel arm 40 and near its rear end at 44 to a bracket 45 rising from the bearing 5a in which the pivot pin 6 of the yoke lever is mounted. The length of the linkV 42 is different, preferably less than thel length of the front arm of the yoke 5 so thatfduring the movement of the press head, the arm 40 will be rocked dueto the differential movement of the link 42 and the yoke lever 5. Preferably, the link 42 is not pivoted directly to the bracket 45 but slides endwise in a sleeve 46 which is pivoted between the bifurcations of the bracket 45, and the endwise movement of the link 442 during the elosin0r of the press is resisted by a spring 47 interposed between the rear end of the sleeve 46 and adjustable abutment or nut 48 on the rear end of the link 42. Also the linkl42 is acted on by a. spring 49 weaker than the spring 47 and acting in opposition thereto, the spring' 49 being interposed between a cross bar 50 which lconnects the bifurcations of the yoke lever 5, and shoulder 51 on the rod 42 in front of this cross bar 50. c
In order to facilitate the ironing or pressing of the shirt close up to the neck band, especially when the-neck band clamp is used embodying aloop which overhangs thekportion of the shirt adj oiningy the neck band,the head is provided with a lip 52 along the lower` side of the wall of the cut-out 23, this lip tucking under the loop 24 Vor pressingthe Leonesa vthe link 42 ini its forwardlposition so` that the arm 404 is in such position that the high points of the cam 37 rest ont-he low points of the cam 36. As the press head close'sthe pivotal connection 431d'escrilbes; a -d-itierent arc Y than does the shaft 28. y 4This difference in the arcsx described' is d-ue to the fact thatthe lever 5-and link42are different lengths and are pivoted to rotate about diierent-centers. The movement ofV the lever 5,`as the pressl closes, Will cause the link 42' to rotate the arm 40 Vandcam 37 so that'the cam 361Wil1 be thrust tothe right, in Figure, to slide the head laterally toward the neck *band-t holder.V The force With-'Which the l-ink 42 rotates the arm 401 and earn-'37 will depend on the amount of compression of the spring 47Av during the endwise movementl of' the link 42.- The nut 48 provides means for adjusting the tenslonfof the spring 47, and this spring 47 renders the means which thrust thehead laterally yieldable so that no damage willv result if the lip 52 contacts with the neck bandv holder before thev pressing jaws are together under final heavy pressure. As thehead approaches vthe buck, it moves successively into positionsA, B, CgD and E Where it is closel` to the Work on the buck and under littleor `no pressure. Dur-ing the iinal movement of. th'e'rhead from position- DI toposition-E,the 11p 5v2-moves close up to the neck bandi.

In a shirt pressing machine, the combination of a buck having a neck band clamp at one end projecting above the pressing surface of said buck, a head movable toward and from the buck and also laterally endwise of the buck toward and from the neck band clamp, kthe head having a cut-out complemental to the clamp, a movable carrier for the head, the head being movable laterally relatively to theY carrier to carry the wall of the cut-out toward and from the neck band clamp, means operable during the closing movement of the head to move the head laterally at the end of the closing movement, said means comprising cams movable up and down with the head, one cam being fixed relatively to the head to move endwise therewith, and the yother being fixed relatively to the carrier, and yieldable means for moving the latter as the head approaches closed position, and spring means for returning the head laterally to itsoriginal position when the press opens.

In a shirt pressing machine, the combination of a supporting frame, a buck on the frame having a neck band clamp at one end, a head movable toward and from the buck and also laterally endwise of the buck, the head having a cut-out complemental to the clamp, a carrier pivoted to the frame for' the head, the head being movable laterally relatively to the carrier, means for moving the head laterally comprisinga rocking cam member associated with the carrier, and a cam member associated with the head and coacting with the rocking cam member to shift the head laterally during the movement of the rockingcam member, a link pivoted at one end to saidrocking cam member and extending toward the pivot of the carrier and being pivoted to the frame at a point spaced apart from the pivot of the carrier, so that the link rotates about a different center than the carrier whereby Vduring the movement of the carrier, said rocking cam member is actuated by the differential movement of the carrier and the link.
8. In a shirt pressing machine, the combination of a buck having a neck band clamp at one end, a head movable toward andfrom the buck and also laterally endwise of the buck, the head having a cut-out complemental to the clamp, -a pivoted carrier for the head, the head being movable laterally relatively to the carrier, means for moving the head laterally comprising a rocking cam member associated with the carrier and means associated with the head and coacting with the rocking cam member to shift the head laterally during the movement of the rocking cam member, a link pivoted at one end to said ment 'of the link during the closing movement of the head. v Y

In a shirt pressing. machine., the combination of a supporting frame,a buck carried by the frame and having a neck band clampy at one end, a head movable toward andv from the buck and also laterallyrendwise of the buck, the lhead having a cut-out complemental to the clamp, a carrier pivoted to the frame for the head, the head being ,movable laterally relatively to the carrier, means for moving the head laterally comprising a rocking cam m'emberassociated with the carrier anda cam member associated with the head and coacting with the rockingcam memberto shift the head laterally during the movement of the rocking cam member, a link pivoted at one end to said rocking cam member and extending toward the pivot ofthe carrier and being slidably lpivoted to the frame at apoint spaced apart from the pivot of the carrier whereby the link rotates about a different center than the carriera-nd said rocking cam member is actuated by the diferential pivotal movement of the carrier and the link, a spring for resisting the'sliding endwise movement of the link during the closing movement of the head, and an ,additional spring acting on the link in opposition tothe first spring and being weaker than th-e first spring. f f

In a shirt pressing machine, the combi,- nation of a supporting frame, a buck carried by the frame and having a neck band clamp at one end, a head movable towardv and from the buck and also laterally endwiseof the buck toward and from the neckband clamp, the head rhaving a cut-out complemental vto the clamp, a lever carrying the head, a shaft eX- tending transversely ofthe lever and slidably mounted therein, the head having ears fixed to the shaft, a cam on the shaft, a second cam rotatably mounted on the shaft and coacting with the first cam, the second cam having'a rock arm, means 'for holding the second cam from axial movement and a link extending lengthwise of the'lever and pivoted at one end to the rock arm and at its other end to the frame at a point spaced from the axis of the lever. i Y

head having atout-out complemental to the clamp, a lever carrying the head, a shaft extending transversely of the lever and slidably mounted therein, the head having ears fixed to the shaft, a cam Iixed on the shaft, a second cam rotatably mounted on the shaft and coacting with the `iirst cam, means for holding the second cam from axial movement, a link extending lengthwise of the lever and pivoted at one end to the rotatable cam and at its other end slidably pivoted to the frame at a point spaced from the pivot of the lever, so that Vthe link rotates about a dierent lcenter than the lever, the link being slidably mounted relatively to the pivot, and spring means for resisting the sliding movement.

In a shirt pressing machine, the combination of a buck having a neck band clamp at one end projecting above the pressing surface of said buck, a head movable toward and from the buck and also laterally endwise of the buck toward and from the neck band clamp, the head having a cut-out complemental to the clamp and also having' a laterally extending lip along the lower edgeof the cut-out and projecting into the cut-out for pressing the shirt close up to the neck band, the lip having a pressing face forming an extension of the pressing face of the head, and means for actuating the head and moving it laterally toward the neck band clamp during the closing operation of the head.V

A shirt pressing machine including cooperative pressing elements; a neck band holder adjacent one end of one of the pressing elements, the other pressing element being formed with a cut-out portion complemental to the neck band holder; means for moving one of said pressing elements toward and from the other to close and open therpress; Y
and automatic, yieldable'means for moving one of said pressing elements laterally with respect to the other to vbring the edge of the cut-out portion of the upper pressing element close to the neck band clamp.
14. A shirt pressing machine including cooperative pressing elements; a neck band holder adjacent one end vof one of the pressing elements, the other pressing element being p formed with a cut-out portion complemental to the neck band holder; means for moving oneV of said pressing elements toward and from the other to closeand open the press; automatic mechanism for moving one of the pressing elements laterally as the elements come together under heavy pressure; and .adjustable means to control the force exerted by said mechanism.

In a garment or laundry pressing machine cooperative pressing elements one of which is movable with respect to the other to open and close the press; operating mechanism for the movable pressing element; mea-ns for moving the pressing elements laterally with respect to one another as they come into final pressing contact, including a cam rotatable with respect to the laterally movable element; means operated bytheV opening and closing movement of the mo-vable element to impart such rotary movement to the cam and a cam follower connected to the laterally movable element.
