Description

SLEEVE HOLDER Filed May 4, 1929 INVENTOR.
Patented Mar. 8, 1932 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE ALBERT'K AGI, OF SYRACUSE, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO THE PROSPERITY COMPANY INC OF SYRACUSE, NEW YORK, A CORPORATION OF NEW YORK SLEEVE HOLDER Application filed May 4,
This invention relates to garment and laundry presses and has for its object a particularly simple and efficient means for holding one article on the buck or lower pressing element of the machine from disarrangement after being laid by the operator, while another article is being laid. The articles may be entirely different articles or parts of the same garment as the sleeves of a shirt or other garment.
The invention consists in the novel features and in the combinations and constructions hereinafter set forth and claimed.
In describing this invention, reference is had to the accompanying drawings, in which like characters designate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a pressing machine embodying my invention.
Figure 2 is an enlarged fragmentary perspective view.
Figure 3 is a plan view-of the buck and the work holder.
Figure 4 is a fragmentary detail view of the mounting for the work holder.
1 designates the buck or lower pressing element of a modern press. 2 is the head cooperating with the buck. The buck is mounted on the frame 3 of the machine in the usual manner, and the head is supported to move toward andfrom the buck in any well known manner. The head is here shown as carried at the front end of a yoke lever or frame lever 4 pivoted between its ends at 5 to a standard 6 rising from the frame. It is actuated in any well known manner through mechanism connected to the rear arm of the yoke lever. It is here illustrated as actuated by a motor comprising a cylinder 6 having a piston therein, the rod 7 of which is connected by an angle lever 8 and link 8 to the rear arm of the lever 4... The piston is single acting and the press is opened, when the pressure in the cylinder is released, by countersprings 9, 10. The flow of motive fluid, as air, to and from the cylinder is controlled by valves operated by a push button 11 and trip lever12. The actuating mechanism forms no part of this invention. De-
pression of the push button 11 closes the press 1929. Serial No. 860,515.
and operation of the lever 12 opens the press.
The work holder comprises a clamping member 14 having a jaw 15, the working face of which' extends lengthwise of the rear )ortion of the buck 1. The pressing face 0 the buck is convex and of the head concave. The clamping member 14 is located so that its jaw swings down on the buck.
The jaw 15 is here shown as carried at the front ends of overhanging arms 16. The clamping member is pivoted at 17 at a point below the rear edge of the buck or in therear of the vertical plane of the lengthwise zone or locality of the buck with which the jaw coacts, so that the jaw comes down on the work on the buck.
The pivot shaft 17 is'mounted in suitable bearings 18 on the frame. The clamping member is actuated by a pedal 19 pivoted at 20 to the machine frame and connected by a link 21 to a rock arm 22 on the pivot shaft 17.
The actuation of the pedal 19 is against the action of a returning spring 23.
In operation, the operator first stretches and lays .one article, as the sleeve 24 of a shirt, on the rear part of the buck 1 (see Figure 3) and then while holding it stretched, depresses the pedal 19 to bring the jaw 15 over onto the article to holdit from disarranging. He then lays the other article or sleeve on the buck and depresses the push button 11 to close the press and at the same time releases the pedal 19 so that the sprin 23 reacts and moves the jaw to its norma position.
Owing to the relative arrangement of the pivot 17 and the jaw 15, the jaw moves rearwardly out of the path of the head and does not encounter the head while the head is closing, if the push button 11 is operated, aid the pedal 19 released at approximately the same time. During the closing of the press, there is not time for either article to become disarranged. These artcles are damp but adhere to the padding on the buck, and when stretched out on the buck preparatory to become disarranged while the other article operative or sleeve was being laid.
By my work holder, the article first laid is held temporarily from disarranging while the other article is being laid.
What I claim is:
1. In a pressing machine comprising upper and lower cooperating pressing elements, one of which is mounted on a pivoted lever for movement toward and from the other; the combination of a clamping member for holding one article in laid position on the lower pressing element while another article is being positioned thereon, means behind the lower pressing element on which the clamping member is mounted for forward move-- ment transverse to the path of the movable ressing element into operative position adacent the rear edge of the lower pressing element, and rearward movement out of the path of the movable pressing element; and
means for operating the clampingmember,
2. In a pressing machine comprlsing upper and lower cooperating pressing elements, one of which is movable toward and from the other, the combination of a clamping member for holding one article in laid position on the lower pressing element while another article is being laid thereon, said clamping member being long and relatively narrow, means mounting said clamping member in the rear of the lower pressing e e into clamping position with its long dimension extending lengthwise of the lower pressing element adjacent the rear edge thereof.
3. In a pressing machine comprising upper and lower cooperating pressing elements, one of 'which is movable toward and from the other, the combination of a long and relatively narrow clamping member for holding one article in laid position on the lower pressin element while another article is being lai thereon, a pedal for moving said member into position with its long dimension extending along the length of the buck adjacent its rear edge, and a spring ,Eor moving said member out of operative position and out of the path of the movable pressing element.
4. In a pressing machine in combination cooperative pressing elements ione of which is movable toward'and from the other; a clamping device for holding one article in laid position on the fixed pressing element while another article is being laid and positioned thereon, said clamping device including a long and relatively narrow holder for contacting with the article adjacent the rear edge of the fixed pressing element an arm carrying said holder, a mounting behind and below the rear edge of the fixed movable pressing element, with the long dimension of the holder extending along the length of the fixed pressing element, a pivotal connection ment for movement the arm to swing to move the holder forward day of May, 1929.
