Description

March 21, 1933. H. v. BRYAN 1,901,866
TOOTHBRUSH Filed Oct. 28, 1931 'INVENTOR 4 ATTORNEY Patented Mar. 21, 1933 UNITED STATES HAMILTON V. BRYAN, OF THE UNITED STATES NAVY TOOTHBRUSH Application filed October 28, 1931. Serial No. 571,618.
Qumran mmrn THE ACT or macn 51883451321112]: nan. so. 1928; 370 o. o. 751) This invention relates to a tooth brush and has for an object to provide an improved tooth brush and handle that may be used to brush the teeth in a more efficient manner than is possible with present known types of toothbrushes.
A further object of this invention is to provide a tooth brush wherein the handle is twisted and bent at an angle to the .plane of the bristle holding portion.
A further object is to provide a tooth brush wherein the plane of the handle is at an angle both horizontally and vertically to the plane of the bristle holding portion.
A further object is to provide a tooth brush whose handle is twisted and bent or curved in a manner that produces by the present usual motion of the hand a new relative motion between the bristles and the surfaces of the teeth and gums, so that the bristles more efficiently reach all the recesses of the teeth and gums and without awkwardness.
With the above and other objects in view,
the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be described more full hereinafter.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, in which like reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which:
Fig. 1 is a top plane view of the tooth brush embodying this invention, looking down on the bristle holding portion;
Fig. 2 is a view at right angles to Fig. 1.
There is shown at 10 a tooth brush comprising the handle portion 11 and the bristle 4 holding portion 12 wherein are provided the bristles 13. The bristles 13 may be of any conventional shape such as shown or otherwise. The handle 11 is bent at an angle as at 14 to the bristle holding portion 12, it
being observed that the plane of the bristle holding portion 12 is at an angle to the plane of the handle portion 11; that is, this brush differs from the conventional brush in that the handle 11 is twisted or curved both vertically and horizontally out o; the plane of the bristle holding portion 1 It will be further noted that the bristles 13 extend at right angles to the bristle holding portion 12 and that the plane of the handle 11 is also at right angles to the plane of the bristle holding portion 12 and in arallelism with the bristles 13. Also, the an dle 11 is at least of the same width as the bristle holding portion 12 and the connect-- 5o ing joint 14 is likewise of this same width. As a result of this construction, the handle 11 holds the bristle holding portion 12 with much greater rigidity durin use than it would were it in the same pfiine, or if the joint 14 were of extreme narrowness. When a brush of the type shown is used, the handle will point downwardly and away from the mouth while the bristles are brushing fhte teeth, thus making it easier to manipu- It will be understood that the above description and accompanying drawing comprehend only the general and preferred embodiment of my invention, and that various changes in construction, proportion and arrangement of parts may be made within the scope of the appended claim without sacrificing any of the advantages of my invention.
The herein described invention may be manufactured and used b or for the Government of the United tates for governmental purposes without the payment of any royalties thereon or therefor.
I claim:
A tooth brush, com rising a bristle holding portion in one at plane, bristles extending therefrom at right angles thereto, and a relatively wide handle portion in a flat plane in parallelism with said bristles, said handle portion bein at least substantially as wide as the brist e holding portion, the entire plane of the handle portion being at an oblique angle axially, vertically 95 and horizontally to the entire plane of the bristle holding portion whereby the handle portion serves to hold the bristle holding portion with substantial rigidity during use.
HAMILTON V. BRYAN.
