n This invention relates to an improvement in doll structures and has for an object to provide the upper body portion and the neck of relatively thin sheet metal.

Another object is to provide a relatively thin sheet metal upper body portion having means arranged to compress or pinch the upper end of the lower body portion of the doll for securing it thereto.

Another object is to provide a relatively thin sheet metal upper body portion having resilient contracted front and back portions provided with a series of inwardly .bent teeth for engaging the lower body portion of the doll for removably holding the same thereon.

Another object is to provide certain improvements in the form, construction and arrangement -of the several parts whereby the above named and other objects may eEectively be attained.

A practical embodiment of my invention is represented in the accompanying drawing, in which Fig. 1 represents a front elevation of a portion of a doll having my improved upper body portion applied to the upper end of the lower body portion and certain other parts being shown in dot and dash outline;

Fig. 2 represents a vertical central section through the upper body portion, certain of the parts connected therewith being shown in dot and dash outline;

Fig. 3 represents a modified form of the upper body portion, the lower body portion and portions of the arms being shown 1n dot and dash outline; and

Fig. 4 represents a side elevation of the upper body portion.

My invention is particularly adapted for use in connection with dolls having a soft yielding lower body portion which is secured to the upper body portion4 and capable of being readily and easily removed therefrom for purposes of repair or replacement of the parts contained in the head or the connecting means of the arms and head.

In the form shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the lower body portion of the doll denoted by 1 is preferably composed of an outer cover of fabric or other similar material which is filled with a compressible'substance, suchas cotton, kapok, eXcelsior, or like material. This lower body portion 1 is Itherefore relatively soft and springy and will be normally expanded so that it will yield by pressure or return to its normal size when released. The purpose of which will hereinafter be explained. i The upper body portion is preferably developed from a single sheet of relatively thin metal to form an upper body 2 and a neck 60 This upper body 2 comprises shoulders 4, 5V adjacent the neck 3, a breast 6 and a back 7. The shoulder 4 is bent downwardly at 8 and provided with a socket 9 having a central hole 10 therethrough. The shoulder 5 65 is similarly bent downwardly at 11 and provided with a socket 12 having a central hole 13. The socketsv 9 and 12 are arranged to receive the upper end of the arms 14, 15 of the doll, shown in dot and dash outline. 4The 70 arms are resiliently held in position in their sockets by an elastic means 16located within the upper body portion and secured to loops 17, 18 on the arms 14, 15, respectively.

The outer surface of the neck 3 is of convex '75 form and arranged to receive a head 19, shown in dot and dash outline. The head is also resiliently held in position on the neck by means of a link 20, or other suitablemeans,` having one end movably secured to the head at 21 and the other end extending downwardly through a hole 22 in the neck in position to engage the elastic means 16.

The lower end of the breast 6 is contracted at 23 and its edge 24 turned inwardly in posi- 85 tion to engage the soft yielding lower body 1. In the present instance, I have shown the edge 24 provided with a series of inwardly bent teeth 25, which are arranged to bite into the cover and filling of thelower body 1. The lower end of the back is similarly contracted and its edge provided with inwardly bent teeth 26 also arranged to engage the soft yielding lower body 1. The contracted portions ofl the breast and back are also arranged to yield i slightly, so that the soft yielding lower body 1 will be pinched therebetween and held in position in the.- upper body portion2 against unintentional displacement.

body from the upper body for purposes of repair or replacement, the lower body is compressed, in the vicinity of the teeth, so that the teeth will be withdrawn from the lower body, whereupon it may be then moved downwardly and away from the contracted portions of the breast and back.

In the form shown in Figs. 3 and 4, the upper body portion is also formed of relatively thin sheet metal and comprises a neck 27, shoulders 28, 29, a breast 30 contracted at 3l and a back 32 contracted at 33. The contracted portion 3l of the breast is provided with a series of inwardly bent teeth 34, while the contracted portion 33 of the back has a series of inwardly bent teeth 35. The shoulders 36, 37 of the lower body 38, shown in dot and dash outline in Fig. 3, are arranged to rest against the inner surfaces of the shoulders 28, 29 of the upper body portion, while the teeth 34, 35 engage the lower body 38 and hold it against displacement.

It will, therefore, be seen that the upper body portion will be removably secured to the lower body Without the use of glue, cement, or the like.

It is also to be pointed out that the relatively tliin sheet metal upper body portion may be easily and quickly decorated and finished completely before it is developed into shape, or it may be finished after it is formed, thereby materially reducing the time consumed in the manufacture.

Another advantageous feature of this invention is the fact that the construction and assembly ofthe doll does not require the use of skilled labor, thereby reducing the cost of manufacture.

It is obvious that various changes may be resorted to in the form, construction and arrangement of the several parts without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention; and hence I do not intend to be limited to the details herein shown and described, except as they may be included in the claims.

What I claim is:

l. A doll structure having a lower body portion, an upper body portion including a breast, a back and a neck formed of a single piece of relatively thin sheet metal, and means integral with the lower end of the breast and back for impinging upon and removably securing said upper body portion to said lower body portion.

2. A doll structure having a lower body portion, breast, a back and a neck formed of a single piece of relatively thin sheet metal, said breast and back being provided with inwardly disposed teeth on the lower end thereof for impinging upon and securing said upper body portion to said lower body portion.

3. A doll structure having a lower body portion, an upper body portion including a breast, a back and a neck formed of a single piece of relatively thin sheet metal, said breast and back being curved inwardly and provided with inwardly disposed teeth on the lower end thereof for impinging upon and securing said upper body portion to said lower body portion.
