Nov. 1, 1932. J. R. BROWN GAUGE COCK Filed Oct. 30. 1926 g. 17,. 5 x E 4. i m |1ll y g m 9 75/212 50 ai/azza/ Brown A TTORNEYS Patented Nov. 1', 1932 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE JOHN ROWLAND BROWN, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO THE RELIANCE GAUGE COLUMN COMPANY, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO, A CORPORATION OF OHIO GAUGE COCK Application filed October 30, 1926. Serial No. 145,182.
This invention relates to valves, and more particularly to a construction suitable for gauge cocks, etc., operating under high pressures. Where high pressures, for instance over one thousand pounds, are involved, the requirements imposed on the valve are different and much more exacting than for the more customary low pressures; and it isamong the objects of the present invention to provide a construction which is reliable, and which allows of ready repairs and renewals. Other objects and advantages will appear as the description proceeds.
To the accomplishment of the foregoing and related ends, the invention, then, consists of the features hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims, the following description and the annexed drawing setting forth in detail but one of the various forms in which the principle of the invention may be used.
In said annexed drawing:
Fig.4 1 is a central longitudinal section showing an embodiment of the invention; Figs. 2, 3 and 4 are sections taken on planes indicated by the lines IIII, IIIIII, and IV1'V, respectively, Fig. 1; and Fig. 5 is a fragmentary side elevation.
The reference character 1 in the drawing designates a connection-member threaded at one end for securing into a gage column or I other part to which it is to be applied, and
slightly recessed at the other end to receive a valve seat member 2, a thin gasket being interposed at 3. The valve seat is preferably of tubular form, having a more or less well defined shoulder 4, and is held in position by the valve-casing 5 which is flanged at 6 and engaged by a union nut 7 threading onto the connection member. Within the bore of the valve-casing a valve-plunger 8 is arranged for movement to and from the valve seat. This plunger has a tapered end 9 to coact with the annular edges of the valve seat, and adjacent thereto a discharge nozzle 10 is tapped into the valve-casing. The nozzle 10 preferably has its outlet 11 somewhat deflected angularly so as to divert the discharge stream. The valve-plunger has an operating means in the form of swing levers or lever by a pin 18 set through the hub 13 across in the castellations of the plug 14. On the inner end of the hub 13, there are provided lugs or projections 19 extending in the general plane of the hub, and such as to strike against the nozzle 10 as an abutment when turned either way through the corresponding are left. In this manner the range of movement of the hub is limited to the arc of rotation determined by the lugs and there is no danger of the hub being inadvertently screwed entirely off when in use, but when repairs or renewals are required it is a simple matter to take out the abutment 10 and then the hub member may be removed.
The assembly and manner of use of the device will be clear from the foregoing. Movement of the lever 12 will by virtue of a screw-threaded mounting, advance or retract the hub 13 and with it the connecting-plug 14 and the valve-plunger 8. Only a relatively slight excursion of motion is required, and this may be determined accordingly by the are left between the lugs 19 as a path of motion rotarily. Accurate seating of the valve plunger may be secured by means of the adjustable plug 14, and by having the threaded connection of this into the hub on a finer pitch than that of the threading between the hub and the valve casing 5, a desired fineness of adjustment may be had.
It will thus be seen that the device as a construction, the wear which occurs in the threads soon allows of lost motion and faulty seating, and consequent leakage, and when it comes to repair,'the valve as a whole had to be discarded. lVith the present construction however, it will be seen that the valve-plunger is entirely independent of wear directly efiecting its engagement with the operating means and such wear as may occur may be readily compensated, while by arranging the operating screw threads on a larger external diameter instead of on the relatively small plunger, a large thread and quick action pitch is had, but at the same time with no direct danger of the pressure in front of the valve plunger occasionin g a release or direct blowback of the valve-plunger. Again the valve plunger is positively actuated by means of a connection (not shown) depending from the end of each of the swing levers both in opening and in closing and there is thus no danger of the valve sticking to its seat such as commonly occurs with valves of the type not positively actuated for opening. As a further safeguard also, it will be seen that the valve plunger is positively rotated at the same time that it is advanced or retracted and in this manner also the danger of sticking is further prevented, and accurate seating is insured.
Other modes of applying the principle of the invention may be employed, change being made as regards the details described, provided the means stated in any of the following claims or the equivalent of such be employed.
I therefore particularly point out and distinctly claim as my invention 1.
