applicable to either a straight-way valve or angle valve, both forms being shown'to illustrate the applicability of my improvement.
My present invention is an improvement over the construction shown and described in my prior Letters Patent of the United States dated October 10, 1905, and numbered 801,648, and discloses a structure wherein certain defects which, in practice, are found to be objectionable to it's satisfactory operation, are remedied. y
In the drawings forming part of this application, Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view through the operative parts of the valve and its casing on line l-1 of Fig. 2. r Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view on line 22, Fig. 1, showing the position of the operative pin in the bottom part of the casing lookinv in the direction of the arrow. Fig. '3 is a detail perspective view of the plug. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal vertical sectional view on the line 44 of Fig. 5, and Fig. 5 is a horizontal sectional view on line 5-5 of Fig. 4. Fig. 6 is a detailed perspective view of the plug as used in this form of straight-way valve; while the plug shown in F1 3 is for an an le valve.

It will be noticed that the lower end of the plug g is milled back from its outer surface so as to form a web portion 9, and also a web q on the part of the plug towards the center thereof.
The operation of the valve is as follows: Referring to Fig. l (which shows the valveplug in its closed or seated position), the operator rotates the valve-stem by means of the usual hand-wheel in a left-handed movement which causes the left-handed thread f to elevate the plug 9 from its seat in the casing and draw the same firmly a ainst the portion 1- 0f the stem until the friction between the plug and stem is great enough to rotate the plug and bring the'opening IL in the plug into register with the opening j of the casing. The shoulder portion 11. at one extremity of the helical surface 7; will then strike the threaded stem 0 and limit the rotary movement of the plug to 90 degrees. In order toolose the valve, the operator rotates the hand-wheel right-handedly causing the plug g to descend, and as it descends it is forced against the pin 0. The

One advantage in making the p1n 0 adjustable is thatit readily. permits its removal and allows the plug 9 to be accurately ground into the casing 11, and after this grinding is finished, the pin 0 is inserted the proper distance and firmly locked by means of the set-nut s.

In both of the forms herein described, the use of the removable pins not only cheapens the construction over that shown and described'in my prior patent above referred to, wherein ribs are employed for causing the rotation of the valve-plug, but it also results in greateraccuracy and adjustment of the parts, since it is found to be a difficult matter to make a good fit between the ribs and the lower end of the plug. Furthern'iore, this construction permits an anglevalve to be made; but in my prior patent the ribs would not permit the construction of such a'kind of valve. The pins 0 and 4 also serve the purpose of properly maintaining the vertical movements of the plug during the rising and falling movements of the same.
What I claim, is
1. As an improvement in valves, a casing,
a plug, the lower end of which is provided with a helical surface, limitingv means projecting into the casing and engaging said surface, the plug being formed with limiting stops at the extremities of said surface, whereby rotary movement is imparted to the plug and the extent of rotation is limited, and means for imparting a vertical movement to the plug. v
2. A valve having in combination a casing, a conical shaped plug, the lower portion of .which is provided with a groove having a helical surface, a-web element between thehelical surface and the outer surface of the plug, the groove having abutments at its extreme ends, and means mounted on the easing and projecting into the groove, engaging the helical surface, whereby when a vertical movement is imparted to the plug the same will be rotated by the en agement of the projecting means, and the imit of rotation will be determined by the abutments.
3. A plug with the casing thereof, an adjustable mem- "ber secured to the casing and projecting into the interior thereof and parallel with the axis of the plug, the with a helical surface or engaging the adjustable member whereby when a vertical movement is given to the plug the same will be rotated.
4. A valve havin in combination a plug,
the lower portion-of which isformed with a groove having a helical surface and limiting stops at its end portion, an adjustable pin 'mounted in the casing and engaging the surface, means for operating the plug comor en v prising a valve-stem, threads thereon gaging threads in the plug, a shouldered portion onthe stem, whereby when the stem 1s operated in one direction the plug is unseated and brought against the shouldered portion permitting the plug and stem to rotate together to open the valve, as devalve having in combination lug being provided v scribed, and whereby when the stem is rotated in the opposite direction rotary movement is imparted to the plug to close the same.
