T his invention reintes lo warded lock meehanism espeeiaily adapted for use in padlochs. The object oi" this invention is to devise a warded mechanism which will allow for a number of hey changes and which wili *e security against picking. A. common We ness ot Warded mechanism resides in the rect that the key may be cut away to avoid ail of the Wards and thus directly operate the lool; ing mechanism. My invention provides tor 'ieans designed to prevent operation ot a Warded mechanism by any ley other than that for -which the wards and other mechas nism Were designed.
rilhe invention is clearly di lowing speeiiication and i wherein Fi" sed in the tolthe drawing il .section oi s parts therel of e. e 3 ,s a too and n. i
si(v view of my spcial n gore 1 is a 'ieivoi the i position. Figure 91s a top, side an view orp the loch operating c m.
Reterringmore particularly to te dran ing,l have shown a oas' 10 having mounttherein a shackle 11 rsh is controiled by rotary boit This rot ry boit 12 is operb e by cani 13 shown more speciiicaliy in Figure 9, This cam 13 has an opstanding portion 141 ivhicl is adapted to operate in a groove orn tho'cain '10 to operate 'he same 1.2/ against the pressure of spring' 15. Y All tleis mechanism is crescrhed and claimed in an application of Charles Ledin, Serial Number 360,495 tion.
The cam 13 rests at the top ot the Ward box 16 shown more particularly in Figure 8, Mounted below this cam in the bor: 16 are a series of Wards 17, spacers 18 and a single oamming Ward 19, shown more particularly in Figure 4.
and forms no part or mv inven-v Serial No. 388,101.
The Ward box 16 is equipped With a pair of lower lugs 20 which are adapted to iit in the slots 21 ot the bottom assembly plate 22. This plate 22 holds the Wards in position and is itself held Within the lock casing by the spun-over portion 23a of the padlock casing V10. r1`his bottom plate 22 is also equipped With a pair of lugs 23 which are adapted to holdin position the deadloclring spring 24, as shown in Figure 2.
rihe various Wards 17 and likewise the spacers 18 are equipped with cut-away portions 25, which cooperate With the indented portion 26 ot the Ward box 16 to hold the Wards securely in xed relation. The single Ward 19 is cut away at the point 27, so that it is movable with relation to the box 16 and the other vmrds.r Similarly this Ward 19 is equipped with a camming portion 28 which i s adapted to operate the deadlocking spring ,24 in a manner to be described presently.
' rThis deadlocking spring, as may be noted from Figure 1, lies normally in a vertical position and has its end portion 29 normally resting in a groove 8O of the operating cam 13., it iviil thus be seen that While the deadlocking portion 29 is held Within this groove 30, it will be impossible to rotate the cam by any tool inserted through the key/Way and designed to avoid the Wards. he movable Ward 19, on the other hand, when actuated by the proper key, will act through its camminq portion 28 to cam the spring 24 into the position of Figure 2, so that 29 will be outside of the groove 30 and operation of the cam 13is possible.
The operating cam 13 is equipped with a bottom groove 31 into which the key 32 is adapted to enter for the purpose ot directly oivierating this cam in the usual manner. In order to prev-ent the entrance into this groove of a screw-driver or other tool surreptiously used, a hump 33 is placed in this groove and the key is designed with a cut-away portion 34 to avoid this hump. f
From the above speciiication, the operation of the padlock should be perfectly clear, but in order to more fully disclose the same, a brief summary of the operation Will novv be given.
The entrance of the key 32 into the operating groove 31 of the cam 13 is possible because the key 32 is cut away to avoid the hump 33. Rotation of the key 32 Will be possible since this key is cut away to avoid the wards 17. The key is equipped, however, with one portion adapted to operate the movable ward 19 so that the camming section 28 of that Ward, Will operate the spring 29 and Withdraw it from the groove 30 of the cam 13. Further rotation of the key will then operate the cam 13 to rotate the bolt 12 againstthe spring 15 and permit the ejection of the shackle.
While this invention has been described in itsV relation to a padlock, it should be understood that other uses of the same in all types of locks are possible, and applicant does not wish to be limited to the particular means described since modifications within the scope of the claims will be apparent to one skilled in the art. i
I claim:
1. In a lock, a warded mechanism comprising a tubular casing, a series of Wards mounted in said casing and secured against movement relatively thereto, a cam mounted for rotation in said casing, and having an upstanding and protruding lug portion, a spring member carried by said casing and adapted to deadlock said cam member, a movable ward in said series of wards, said ward being operable by the proper key to move said spring member out of deadlocking ition, said tubular casing and its contents ing insertable as a unit into the particular lock for which it is intended.
2. In a lock, a warded mechanism comprising a tubular casing, a series of Wards mounted in said casing and secured against movement relatively thereto, a cam mounted for rotation in said casing and having a bolt actuating portion, a spring member secured at one end to said casing and adapted to deadlock said cam member, said spring member being in contact with said series of wards, a movable ward in said ward series, said movable ward being key operable to rotate said movable ward to move said spring out of cam deadlocking osition.
Signed at tamford, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, this twentythird day of August, A. D. 1929. i
