This invention relates to a dovetail for an automotive vehicle body. This invention more particularly relates to an improvement in a type of dovetail such as shown in the co-pending application of Howard B. Haskins and Emory Glenn Simpson, Serial No. 549,448, filed July 8, 1931. The type of dovetail shown in the above co-pending application has proved highly satisfactory both as a registering device for properly aligning the door in the door opening, and as a bumper for throwing the door open when the latch bolt is retracted. In this form the dovetail cushions the door and functions silently in its in and out movement and in its upward and downward movement as it adj usts itself to the relative movement between the door and the door opening, .but it has been found that the relative edgewise movement between the door and the door opening causes a rattle between the dovetail socket and its casing. This rattle arises by virtue of the'commercial tolerances permitted between the side faces of the dovetail socket and its casing. Hence, it is an object of this invention to eliminate this rattle.

In the drawing the vehicle body pillar 1 is provided with a recess 2 which receives the dovetailcasihg 3, provided'with the cover plate 4. The casing 3 is adapted toreceive the female member 5 which has a dovetail socket 6 for the reception of the wedge mem: ber 7 which is carried by the door pillar 8. The socket member 5, as described in the above mentioned co-pending. application, is cushioned above and below by the rubber blocks 10, and is spring .loaded by the coil Serial No. 582,237.
springs 11 which are mounted between the back of the casing 3, and which engage the socket member 5 in the openings 12.
In fabricating this type of dovetail, it is commercially impractical to obtain a nice rattle or noise proof fit between the side face of the socket member}; and the front plate 4, and the side face of the socket member and the back of the casing 3, consequently, when the wedge member 7 interengages the member 5 in the socket 6, the body weaves and other movements incident to the operation of an automotive vehicle, will cause relative movement in an edgewise direction between the door 8 and the door opening. This movement will be transmitted through the wedge member 7 to the socket 5, thereby causing the socket 5 to move sidewise, or to the left and to the right as viewed in Figure 2. This sidewise movement, owing to the clearance 13, i. e., commercial clearance and tolerance, between the female member -5 and the front plate 4 and the back 20 of the casing 3, will set up a rattle or noise unless the clearance is taken up. .To prevent a this rattle or noise it is proposed to mount suitable anti-rattling inserts between both the back 20 and the front plate 4 of the casing and the shoe 5.
To-this end the socket member 5 is provided with a plurality of recesses 14 on the side faces which are each adapted to receive a suitable insert 15. As shown the side face of the socket -member 5 is provided with a pair of inserts 15, one on either side of the socket 6, and the side face is provided with three inserts as shown in Figure 4. These inserts may be of any suitable resilient or sound deadening material such as felt, cork, or rubber.
As shown in Figures 1 to 4, the inserts are felt and preferably soaked in oil prior to their insertion in the recesses 14. .It will be noted, particularly in Figure2, that the inserts 15'project outwardly from the side faces of the socket member 5 into engagement with the front plate 4 and the back 20 of the cas- 'ing 3, thus to effectively eliminate relative V In Figures 5 and 6 there is shown a modified form of dovetail socket and insert. In this form the socket member 50 is provided with suitable recesses 16 for reception of the headed rubber buttons 17. These rubber buttons 17 are preferably of molded rubber, sufficiently hard so that they will permit relative sliding movement between the socket member 50 and the casing 3, and yet effectively cushion the side faces of the socket 50 against clashing with the front and back of the casing I claim:
1. In a dovetail for an automotive vehicle of the type having interengaging male and female members adapted to be mounted on fixed and movable parts of the vehicle body, a casing adapted to receive the female member the side faces of the female member having a small clearance with the casing, and antirattlmg means positioned between one of the side faces of the female member and the casing.

7. In a dovetail of the type having relatively self-adjusting male and female members one of which is movably mounted within a casing, a resilient member mounted between the casing and the said movable member at one of the side faces of the said movable member for preventing rattles between the side faces of the said member and its casing.

In a dovetail of the type having inter-- engaging male and female members adapted to be mounted on fixed and movable parts of the body, the combination with said female member, of a casing, the side faces of said female member having a small clearance with the casing, and inserts of a resilient material positioned between the said female member and casing, and adapted to slidably engage one of the side faces of the female member and casing to prevent'rattling.
5. In a dovetail of the type having interengaging male and female members adapted to be mounted upon fixed and movable parts of the vehicle body, a casing adapted to movably receive the female member, and at least one felt insert carried by one of the side faces of the female member for slidably engaging the said casing to prevent rattling between the side faces of the female member and the casing.
