Description

A, E. GAY;
PIPE-TONGS. No.187,Z6 5. Patented Feb. 13, 1877.
INVENTOR ITNESSES 792Z2 ATTORNEYS UNITE STATES PATENT OFFIoE.
ARTHUR E. GAY, OF NASHUA, NEW HAMPSHIRE.
IMPROVEMENT IN PlPE-TONGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 187,265, dated February 13, 1877; application filed October 10, 1874.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ARTHUR E. GAY, of Nashua, in the county of Hillsborough and State of New Hampshire, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Pipe-Tongs; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawing is a representation of a plan view of my pipe-tongs, and Figs. 2 and 3 are detail views of the same.
This invention has relation to instruments which are known as pipe-tongs, and which have one hooked embracing-jaw and one straight jaw formed on pivoted handles.
The nature of myinvention and improvement on pipe-tongs of the kind above named consists in the employment of a rectangular reversible jaw'block adapted to the straight jaw of the tongs, and so applied to such jaw that eight angular wearing-surfaces can be adjusted in position for use at pleasure, as will be understood from the following description.
In the annexed drawings, A designates the hooked grasping-jaw, which may be of the usual well-known form, with a point, a, for giving the bite. B designates the straight jaw of the tongs, the end of which has a recess formed in it adapted to receive a square block, 0, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. This block is secured to the jaw B by means of a screw, b, the hole for which is made centrally through the block, so that it will have a bearing on the shoulder e, whichever edge is presented for use. The four edges of the block 0 are angularly grooved, which grooves leave eight acute working-edges, c, any one of which can be adj usted in a position to co-operate with the hook A in turning a pipe. When one edge has been dulled another edge can be brought into play, and when the eight edges have been dulled the block 0 can be readily removed from its jaw and a new one substituted at small cost.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The block 0, provided with angular recesses c and female screw-thread d, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The perforated block 0, provided with angular recesses c and female screw-thread d,
in combination with recessed jaw B and curved grasping-arm A, provided with biting-point a, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
ARTHUR E. GAY. Witnesses:
WALTON S. EMERSON, L. S. BRAGKETT.
