Description
W. W. SPEER.
PLOW-STANDARD.
Patented Oct. 31.1876.
WITNESSES INVENTOR (pi 4M )l WAS W.
ATTORNEY6 a; lvrrnn STATES WILLIAM W. SPEER, OF PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN PLOW-STANDARDS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 183,823, dated October 31, 1876 application filed September 29, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM W. SPEER, of Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Plow-Standards; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
My invention relates to plows, and more especially to that part or piece of same known as the standard or support connecting the plow with the beam. My object is to construct such a standard that a less quantity and weight of metal than has been incorporated may be so disposed in the construction of same that an equally strong and good result may follow, as in the old instance. A lighter, cheaper, and more durable standard is thus obtained, and the same may be connected with any plow or analogous agricultural implement.
My invention consists in providing the standard with a corrugated or grooved body, the corrugations or grooves of which shall run concentric with the curve of the cutting-edge of the plow; and a standard is thus constructed having a body peculiarly adapted to resist the strain force brought in an angular line of direction against the same.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 represents my improvement detached from connecting parts, in perspective view, and Fig. 2 is a transverse section through same.
A is the standard complete, which may be of any desired outline as concerns the dip of its forward curve and the general incline of its angle. Any material suitable may be used, whether wrought, or cast, or malleable iron, or any other substance. 0. represents the different corrugations or projecting ribs formed in the body of the standard and giving the latter its peculiar construction, which forms the spirit of my invention.
The corrugated face of the standard of course details into bulging'out ribs and depressing grooves, both of which are in the same curved conformation and angular (lip with the extreme forward or cutting edge of the standard-that is, they form curves concentric with front edge of the standard.
A standard thus constructed may be made as an article of manufacture, and put upon the trade as a separate mechanical piece or it may be formed in the same piece with one or more adjacent parts of a plow. My design, however, is to make it as an independent piece, to which the mold-hoard, share, and land-side are secured by bolts or other en gaging device, and thus constructed relatively together and aggregately to the plow-beam.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The standard of a plow, constructed with corrugations or grooves, curved concentric with its cutting-edge, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 25th day of September, 1876.
WILLIAM W. SPEER.
