SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 3&8,652 dated September 7, 1886,

I?) all whom it may concern: Be it known that I, CHARLES ANDERsoN, of South Bend, in the county of St. Joseph and State of Indiana, have invented certain new 5 and useful Improvements in Flows; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improvement in plows.
In my applications for Letters Patent entitled Sulky-Plows, filed on June 5, 1886, and June 7, 1886, Serial No. 204,223 and No. 204,434, a plow was described as well adapted for use in combination with a sulky-plow, but it possessed features which were of general application to plows, either hand or wheel, and said features were reserved as the subj ectmatter of the present application.
The object is to provide a plow which shall consist of few parts capable ofbeing combined by the use of few bolts, and so combined that there will be no tendency to work loose, forming a compact, strong, and durable plow for general use.
\Vith these ends in view my invention consists in certain features of construction and combination of parts, as will be hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a view of the plowin perspective. Fig. 2 is an inverted perspective. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section; and Fig. 4 is a detached view of the casting to which the mold-board, landsidc, point, and standard are attached.
The plow-beam N is of the channel type, and at its rear end,where it forms the plow-standard n, it is formed nearly or quite straight, extending downwardly to the foot of the plow, and there bending forwardly with a sharp turn, as shown at a.
For securing the mold-board, landside, and point to the standard, a peculiar-shaped casting, 0, is provided, as follows: The side of the casting is shaped to conform to the curve of the mold-board I and furnishes an extended seat for the same. It also extends low enough to form an extended bearing for the 50 plow-point and wingp.
The side 0 of the casting extends rearwardly at the same angle with the side 0 as the landsidep makes with the n1old-board and forms an'extended seat for the landside. The sides 0 and 0 of the casting are firmly united by a horizontal web, 5 o, a short distance above the foot, and by the increased thickness of metal at the upper end 0 The lowerend of the plow-beam N or standard a fits snugly beneath the web 0 and a rib, 0, at the rear edge of the side 0 of the casting, is adapted to lit snugly in the groove in the side of the beam or standard. The beam is locked in its adjustment by means of one or more bolts, Q, (one is snfficient,) which extends transversely through the beam and the side 0 of the casting, and by a long bolt,
g, which extends upwardly through the foot of the standard a, web 0", and re-enforced top 0 of the casting. This latter-named bolt is not, however, absolutely necessary to secure the beam to the plow, but it tends to materially strengthen the attachment and prevent any possible play between beam or standard and plow. The distance of the web 0 above the foot of the plow is naturally determined by the depth of the end of the standard a, the object being to allow the latter sufficient room I to keep it above the foot-bearing of the plow and yet not reduce its depth enough to weaken it.
The attachment on the end of the plowbeam for applying the draft at different points to the right and left of the beam center con sists of a transverse perforated bar, It, projecting farther on the furrow side than on the land side of the beam, to the rear edge of which are secured a pair of rearwardly-extending jaws or branches, 1', adapted to embrace the opposite sides of the plow-beam, to which they are secured by bolts 0-, extending through the jaws or branches and the beam. A strengthening-brace, r", extends from the furrow end of the bar It to the jaw or branch 0', near its rear end.
The clevis S consists of an upright perforated bar terminating rearwardly in a pair of jaws, s, which snugly fit the upper and lower sides of the bar B and lip over the front of said bar, as shown at 8. By sliding the clevis along the bar B and looking it in different po- I00 sitions thereon by a draw-bolt, 8 the plow may be made to take more or less land as desired, and may be held up to its work in sidehill plowing, where the tendency is to 0011- stantly work away from the land.
' The plow, when used as a hand-plow, may be provided with one or a pair of handles for guiding it, and they may be attached to the mold-board or to the casting or to the beam or standard in any well-known or approved manner to suit the size and weight of the plow or the purposes for which it is to be employed.
It is evident that the shape of the casting 0 may be modified in many respects, and that the plow-beam maybe varied from a straight upright at the standard end a, and that other slight changes may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of my in vention; hence I do not wish to limit myself strictly to the construction herein set forth; but,
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new,and desire to seem re by Letters Patent, is
1. In a plow, the combination,with a plow beam and standard, of a casting adapted to form a seat for the several wearing parts of a plow, the said casting having a web located between and integral with the sides of the casting, and a landside-rib forming a seat for the lower end of the standard.
2. In a plow, the combination, with a casting adapted to form a seat for the several wearing parts of the plow, and having a web integral with the sides thereof, and a rib integral with one side thereof, of a plow-standard having a channeled face adapted to be engaged by the rib, and a forwardly-projecting end section adapted to engage the web, substantiallyas set forth.
3. In a plow, the combination, with the plow beam and blade, of ahorizontal barhaving perforations and provided with rearwardly-extending jaws for securing it to the beam, the said bar being braced at the furrow end by a rigid brace extending from it to the jaw, and a clevis consisting of an upright perforated bar provided with a pair of jaws adapted to rest against the opposite faces of the horizontal bar and be secured to the transverse bar in the desired lateral adjustment, substantially as set forth.
