BENNETT, JR, OF HIGHLAND PARIuL,

JERSEY, A CORPORATION TAPE HOLDER Application filed April 5,
The invention relates to holders for storing and dispensing adhesive tape factory wound upon reels or spools and its primary object is to provide a simple and inexpensive holder mainly intended for hospital and industrial uses. Another object is to provide a cutting blade disposed at an oblique angle to the gate through which the tape is drawn from the spool. Other objects are to provide a detachable head or cover plate which may be enpeditiously applied and removed and which may be availed of in conjunction with a friction plate to put desired resistance on the spool against pulling strain on the tape; to provide means which will insure the tape be ing delivered to the cutting blade in a flat state; to provide the cutting blade mounting with endwise disposed wings constituting guards to protect the fingers of the operative and. also serving-as guides to direct the tape against the cutting blade; and to provide a holder which shall be substantially dustproof and otherwise generally aseptic.
The nature, characteristic features and scope of the invention more readily will be understood from the following detailed description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings forming a part hereof, wherein Figure 1 is a perspective view of a holder constructed in accordance with the invention, the cover plate being removed to disclose the spool of tape.
Fig. 2 is a top View with the casing broken away and parts in section.
Fig. 3 is an end view showing the cover plate in position.
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the friction plate.
Fig. 5 is a sectional view embodying a gate closure.
Referring to the drawings, the holder embodies a main casing element comprising a circular head 5 formed or provided with a marginal cylindrical extension 6 having an open slot '7 which constitutes a gate. The head 5 is also formed or provided with a cen' tral extension or boss 8 adapted rotatively to receive a factory wound reel or spool 9 of surgical adhesive tape, and there are legs or of a modification 1930. Serial No. 441,991.
standards 10 properly to support the holder. A central boss or extension 8 carries a pair of screws or other headed elements 11 which ooact with a pair of keyhole slots 12 in a cover plate 13 having a bail or handle 14:; it being understood that by proper manipulation of the cover plate the larger areas of the keyhole slots will pass the heads of the screws and then by slight angular adjustment of the cover plate, the smaller areas of the slots will take under the heads of the screws and thus lock the cover plate in position.
In order to secure the spool or reel against undesirable motion on the boss 8, use is made of a friction member consisting of a metal washer 15 having offset corners l6 and it will be understood that when the cover plate is applied, it puts desired thrust on the spool or reel through the intervention of the friction element, the central body of the latter bearing against the spool while the offset edges impinge upon the head of the casing.
It is a merit of the invention that it includes a cuttingielement useful in severing the tape to desirable lengths and operating in conjunction with means for delivering the tape in a flat state and within the limits of the cutting blade. In the attainment of this, there is provided, at or in the region of the gate 7, a bracket 17 embodying a double armed structure whereof one arm is secured to the holder and terminates in a curl 18 which overlies the gate and whereof the other arm is directed forwardly and laterally to provide for the oblique mounting of a cutting blade 19. The latter may take the form of a wafer-like blade, for example, a conventional safet razor blade, and is secured in proper positlon by a clamping plate 20. The blade carrying arm has endwise disposed wings or lugs 21 whose oflice it is to guide the tape coming flatwise from the curl 18, and thus effectively serve to protect the hands and fingers of the operative. The curl 18 has the merit that it facilitates delivery of the tape and also functions not unlike a fairlead in that when the tape 22, under pulling strain, is delivered through the gate, it is put or maintained in fiat state by its frictional engagement with the curl.
The structure, Fig. 5, has the merit that it provides for substantial dustproot and other wise aseptic conditions in that it embodies a. closure for the gate. lhis may be accomplished by dropping the curl 23 so that its lower portion just contacts with the lower edge of the gate.
Having described the invention, what is claimed is:
1. A holder for a rotative spool of tape, comprising casing elements, including one formed with a peripheral gate, and a cutting blade mounted on said element at an oblique angle to the gate, the blade mounting having wings disposed endwise ot the blade and serving as guides for the tape.
2. A holder for a rotative spool of tape, comprising casing elements, one of which is formed with a gate, a menu or carried by the said element immediately beyond the gate,
- one part of the member being formed as a curl overlying and beyond the gate, and another part of the member providing for the reception of a cutting element.
3. A holder for a rotative spool of tape, comprising casing elements, one of which is formed to provide an annular wall slotted to provide a gate, a cutting element supported by said wall outwardly from and beyond the gate, and a curl arranged on said wall beyond the gate and between the gate and cutter.
4. A holder for a rotative spool of tape, comprising casing elements, one of which is formed with a gate, a tape guiding curl carried by said element wholly beyond the gate, and a cutting element carried by said element above and beyond the curl, the cutting element being arranged at an oblique angle to the gate.
In testimony whereof we have affixed our signatures.
