This invention aims to provide a very compact pumpwhichwill raise a large amount of water witha minimum length of stroke. 1 It iswithin theprovince of the disclosure to improve generally and to enhance the utility of; devices ofthat type to which the I invention appertains,

'A hollow piston rod 10 is mounted to slide second check valve 8. A downwardly closing fourth check valve 11 is carried by the lower end of-the piston rod 10, and controls the passage of liquid through the piston rod. 'Abottom piston 12'is mounted on the rod 10 and slides in the lowerpart 4 of the barrel B between the partition P and thesecond check valve 8 A top piston 14 is secured to the rod 10 and operates in the upper part I through the partition P, and it communicates Y at its lower end with the lower part 4 of the barrel B between the partition 1 and the 5 of the barrel BL "1 01428 15 in the upper end "of the lower part 4 of'the barrel B constitute means for establishing communication between the upperend of the lower member 2 of the cylinder C and the upper end'of thelower part 4' of the barrel B.
I Ports 16 constitute means for establishing communication between the upper part 5 of the barrel B and the interior of the hollow piston rod 10 at a point above the topipiston 14.:
' On the down stroke of the piston rod 10, the second valve 8 closes, the fourth valve 11 opens, liquid passes out through the ports 16, into the space within the upper part 5 of the .barrel'B, above the top piston 14. As the bottom piston 12 moves downwardly,' the first valve 7 closes, liquid is sucked through the portsgl'5 into thespace within the lower part 4 of-the barrel'B, above the bottom piston 12,

Passing to a more detailed description of the invention, the lower part 2 of the cylinder C is threaded into a base 17, having an inter- 'nal shoulder 18, and the inlet 3 being mount- 4 7 ed in the lower end of the bas'el'h .c
A valve cage is provided"andincludes a cap 19, provided at itstop a threaded opening 20. Into the lower end of the opening- 20, the upper "end of'a nipple 21' 1s threaded. The nipple 21 is providedwith an outstanding flange 22. Between the flange 22 and the lower end ofthe cap- 19, a packing 23 isbound. c This packing 23 fits closely within the lower part 4 of the barrel Band pre-r vents the liquid from'leaking downwardly on ctoth'epart 4 of the barrel 13 around the cap 19;,The third check valve '9 slides upand downonthe nipple 21 and rests on an upper plate 24-, threaded onrthe lower part of the ,nippl'e 21, a lower plate 25 being threaded on i [the nipple and resting on the shoulder 18.
Between the plates'24 and 25 is bounda pack ing; 26 that engages the base 17 to prevent leakage. The liquid finds its way upwardly through ports 27 in the plates 24 and 25, and
in the packing 26. Theports 27 are controlled by the downwardly closing third check valve 9. Thedownwardly closingsec- Iond check valve8 operates within the cap 19 and may be hinged at28 to'the upper end of the nipple 21,- the construction being such that the valve 8' will not close the hole 20, when-the valveS opens upwardly. The bottom piston 12, is a composite structure;- It includes a hollow foot 29, threaded on the l-ower'end of the rod 10, and a depending. neck 30. The neck 30 can be threaded into the: opening 20-, and in this "way, the
entire lower valve'structure can be lifted out,
. upon occasion. -The fourthcheck valve 11 may be hinged at 31 within the foot 29 of the bottom piston 12: A disk 32 is threaded on the neck 30',- and a packing33 is bound between the disk 32 and the lower surface of V '7 the foot 29, the packing cooperating with the lower part 4 of the barrel B. In this connection it may be stated that the showingof the packings, generally, is simple and more or less diagrammatic, thesbuilder being-left to" pick out the particular kind of th-at he wishes to use. 7 V 1 The partition P includes a coupling 34 that is threaded into the u-p-perend of the lower paclnng member 2- of the barrel B, the coupling having a depending apron35 into which the upper end of thelower part 4 of the barrel B is threaded. 1 The ports 15 are located partly in the apron 35, and partly in the upper end of the part 4 of the barrel B. A short nipple 36' is threaded into the lower end of the upper part 5015 the barrel, and it is on this nipple 36 that the firstcheck valve 7 slides. W'hatis claimed is i A' pump comprising an upper .tubular member, a-lower tubular member having an inlet, aflower barrel. in the lower. tubular member, a removablepartition separating the tubular members from each other, and separating the upper tubular member from the lower barrel, the partition being fixedly seated during the operation ofthe pump, a check valve'i'on the partition, second check valve structure in the lower barrel, aithird check valve structure in the inlet and connected to the second check valve structure, a hollow piston rod slidable inthe partition, a piston on'the piston rod. andslidable in the lower barrel,v between the partition and the second check valve structure,;interengageable elements on the pistonand on the second; check valve structure, whereby the second check valvestructure and the third check valve structure maybe pulled-out togethercthepiston being engaged with said removable but fixedly seated partition to remove the partition at the same time, a fourth check valve carried'by the piston, means for establishing communication- :between the lower tubular member and the. lower barrel at'a point ahove the piston, Weight means for holding the partition fixedly but removably seated during. the operation of the pump, as aforesaid, said weightmeans comprising a pipe surrounding the piston rod and conneeted to the partitiomthe piston rod having an opening establishing communication between the interior of the piston rod and the interior of the pipe, and a second piston carried by the piston rod and operating in the pipe, below the opening. 1 .e v In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own; I have hereto afiixed my signature.
