Applicationmed Api-i1 14, 191e. sei-m1 No. 91,163.
To all whom-t may con-cern:
Be it knownthat 11,-, HENRY 13.3 lVAIKER',I a citizen of the United' States, and resident'of;
Lancaster, in the county of Fairfield andy State of @hioyhave invented a new and`= useful Improvement Pumps; andI dofhereby declareV the followingtofbe afull, clear', and exact description thereof.'v
My invention relates to pumps more especia-illy adapted` ,for oil and? like deep wells. The object of invention? is-to provide a punipv Vof this character of double-actingv Y ofthe'well, said casing. havingv the perforations 3l in tswall's and?` closed atA its lower end' by thecap 4;. The upper-fendi ofV thel casng or'barrel 2 is threaded into`l the' connection 5.l
Suspended within the connection onthe inclined .shoulder 6 in the inter-ier' thereof is the Working-barrer 7, said working barrer being; screwed into the-[head 85. said' head having the ground-seam); which reste uponV the ncli-neflslioulderA 65 Vformingfa tight joint therewith- The working-barrel 7 may be madeupfof several sectiensrcenneetedlby thel threaded sleeves: 10avi and lotgffhavnigf the bores' 115.
Suitable packing'materiar 12' engages the interiorshoulderspertiens.13er the werking'- barrelyand springe le are4 interposedbetweensaid packingA material` andi-the'- sleeves ica emi-1ro;v senr springe eeen-g te een: een
pac-king material l2" securely i-n-y place',A and! with suii'i'eient" force'- to expand saidj packing materialto form a tight joint betweensaid packing material and theeduct-iontube 155'v for the purpose: more fully hereinafter set forth. Y
This eductiontube throughthelbor'e'li oftheheadY 8,'- Said1 educ'- tion-pipebeing'formedl in sections1con`r`1`ectedl bysleeves.17 andleo.' rheinpperpmnping- 155 passesfy down piston 18v is of the ordinary type with the cups 19; and said piston surroundsthe eduction-pipe, being. located'v between the sleeve 1-7 .and the sleeve 20, said-f pumping-pistonhaving acertain amount of play between4 said sleeves,y such as the space' 2l.
Openings 22 are formed in the ed-uctionplpe at the space 21 between thev pumpingpiston and the lower sleeve20 to admit fluid to4 the, eduction-pipe when the upper pumping-piston is lowered, as will more fully hereinafter appear.
Between the pumping-piston and5 the con-A nectrng. sleeve 1'0a is the space 23 for the accumulation ofk fluid. In this spacey 23 is:
'locatedthe valve 24', said valve consisting of a split'-ring4 25', formed of leather or other suitable material, and secured to the worklngL-barrel by rivets 26.' .Within thev splitring 25' is the split spring-steel bandY 27, whichxis securedY to said split-ring 25 by the rivets 26 and the rivets 28. This spring' tends normally toforce the' split-ring 25 out against the inner walls of the working-'barrel 7, and` acts to close' the openings 29 formed' insaid working-barrel.
A valve 2@ of likey character is located farther down in the' Working-barrel' below the sleeve 10? in the space k23v"-,.and is adapted te controlE the` supply of fluid'y entering the openings' 29a.
rIhe lower end of the eduction-pipe 1'5 carries a pumping-piston 30,' which carries the' valve 81 restingcn the seat 32. Said pumping-piston also has the yopeninl'gS 33 for the admission of the` fluidV contained within the space 23a. y
The' lower end of the workin'g1-b'arrel-v isprovided with the perforated plug 34.
The upper end of the eduction-tube has the valve 35, and above said valv'e,the perforated cap 36.
The tube 37, is threaded intol the connection" 5;
In? the operation of my improved pump,y when the educti'on-'pipe is raised by the wire line or other Connection leading to the ordinary walking-beams or other reciprocating device at the topl ofV the Y well, the pumpingpistonsY are -raised and'y the fluid contained inl the space 23a is forced through the openings 381 of" the'- pumping pistonV 30' andl passesA up into the eduction-pipe 15. At the same time-,-by' the raising of the educ'tionpipe5 the upper pumping-piston being retarded in' its q the sleeve 20 to move up and engage the seat 19a on the lower end of the pumping-piston 18, thereby closing the openings 22. ls the pistons ascend, the vacuum created in the space 23, will act on lthe split-ring fso as tO'cpen'theopenings 29, and fluid passes from the outer casing or vbarrel 2 into said space 23, which increases in capacity as the pumping-piston rises; and said space becomes filled with the fluid, which is held therein due to the closing of the openings 22. In the meantime, the fluid, which has passed from the space 23a through the openings 33 and valve 31 to the eduction-pipe 15, is being lifted by the upward movement of the eduction-pipe to the top of the well;
On the descent of the pumping-pistons, thesleeve 20. will move away from the seat 19a of the upper pumping-piston 18; and as said pumping-piston descends, the fluid contained within the space 23, will be'forced through the openings 22 into the eductionpipe, the valve 25 havingv closed the openings 29 so that as the piston descends, the tluidvcontained within thespace 23 is forced through the .openings and up through the eduction-pipe to the top of the well. At the same. time, the piston 30 atthe lower end, in its descent, through the suction causes the valve 24a to open, admitting fluid by the openings 29a into the space 23a, until said space becomes iilled with fluid, which, upon the upward movement of the piston, passes as before described through the openings 33 and valve 31 into the education-pipe. In this manner,- I provide a double-acting pumpv for oil or.v like deep wells in which the -fluid is raised by both the upward and downward strokes of the pump, and in this way, the capacity of the pump isgreatly increased.
