Description
Oct. 13, 1931. J. M GAVIN AHUSEHEN'I' AND EIXERCISING DEVICE Filed Nov. 12. 1929 BY 5. ATTORNEYS.
Patented Oct. 13, 1931 UNITED STATES JAMES MCGAVIN, F SPRINGFIELD, ILLINOIS AMUSEMENT AND EXERCISING DEVICE Application filed November 12, 1929.
My invention relates to devices for amuselnent and exercising purposes; an object being in this device to provide a simple and convenient as well as inexpensive little device for furnishing added attraction in jumping exercises and adding amusement to such exercise.
A. particular object of my device is to provide a simple and easily manufactured little exerciser that afiords the user a means of developing skill in balancing and jumping exercises as well as to use it as an amusement device alone.
I attain the objects of my invention in the device described in the annexed specification, recited in the claims and illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which like reference numerals indicate like parts in the several figures.
Referring to the figures:
Fig. 1 is a perspective disclosing one of my devices as when in normal use as a foot and leg exerciser or an amusement device.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail of my device showing the ball in section and the string fastened in the end recess thereof.
Fig. 3 is an assembled view of my device shown as when folded up not in use.
Fig. i is an elevation of the handle of my device and shown as it normally appears when not in use.
Referring in detail to the construction of my device and the preferred manner of operating the same, I provide a handle member 1 to one end of which is secured a cup member 2- provided with an end opening 3 through which a string '1 is placed and clamped against end 12 of handle --1 by cup 2- when slipped over the end of handle 1.
The other end of string 4- is secured to a ball 7 by a staple 8 or other suitable holding means of substantial character.
As a matter of convenience in packing and carrying-my device, I provide a recess 9 in ball 7 of suitable size to snugly accommodate end 11- of handle 1--.
for light use and durable for exercising and amusement purposes.
The individual using my device for the purpose stated should stand approximately as is illustrated in Fig. 1 and twirl the handle in a manner to make ball -7 revolve about a circle in a horizontal plane near the floor as he or she jumps over string 4 while ball 7 revolves as indicated by the arrows. It does not matter which direction the ball revolves, that being a matter of convenience to the user.
Having thus described the nature of my invention what I claim is:
1. An amusement and exercising device comprising an elongated handle, a ball, a string connected at one end with the ball, and a cup member establishing connection between the other end of the string and said handle; said cup adapted to slip over the end of said handle and hold said string on; said ball provided with a recess adapted to accommodate the free end of said handle when not in use.
2. As a new article of manufacture, an amusement device comprising in combination, an elongated handle, astring, a cup provided with an end openingand a ball having a recess to accommodate one end of said handle; said string extending through said opening of said cup and secured to said handle by engaging the end of said handle by said cup; said string secured to said ball by the other end within said recess of the ball.
In witness whereof, I hereunto set my hand this 8 day of November 1929.
JAMES MGGAVIN.
