UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ROLLIN G. BROWN, OF DE WIT'I, IOWA.
IMPROVEMENT IN BARBED FENCE-WIRES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 182,351, dated September 19, 1876; application filed August 14, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:'
Be it known that I, ROLLIN GUSTAVUS BROWN, of De Witt, in the county of Clinton and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Barbed Fence-Wire, of which the following is aspecification:
Figure 1 is a detail view of one of the sections of my improved barbed fence-wire. Fig. 2 is a side-view of a portion of the wire, showing three sections interlocked with each other. Fig. 3 is a detail view, showing two sections Fig. 4 is a view showing the interlocking completed.
'Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The object of this invention is to furnish an improved barbed fence-wire, strong and durable, and so formed that the barbs cannot become detached, being formed upon the fence wire itself.
The invention consists in an improved fence wire, formed by interlocking with each other sections, having loops and barbs formed upon their ends, as hereinafter fully described.
A are the sections, which are made of ordinary fence-wire, or of wire a little smaller than ordinary fence-wire, and which I prefer to make about nine inches long. Upon the end parts of the sections A are formed U-loops a projecting at right angles with the length of the sections, and the arms a of which are extended to a proper length for a barb, and have their ends sharpened.
In putting the sections A together the adjacent ends of the sections are overlapped with the loop a of each end over the body of the wire of the other section, and "are then turned in opposite directions, bringing the barbs a parallel with each other, as shown in Fig. 3, and the said barbs are then turned so as to project in opposite directions, as shown in Fig. 4.
I prefer to form'the loops a in such a way that each succeeding pair of barbs a may project at right angles with the preceding pair.
By this construction the barbs are a solid part of the fence-wire and cannot be knocked off, and the sections are so firmly interlocked that they are not liable to be drawn apart, however much they may be strained.
Havingth us described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patcnt- An improved barbed fence-wire formed by interlocking with each other the sections A, having loops a and barbs a formed upon their ends, substantially as herein shown and described.
