IMPROVEMENT IN WIRE-FENCE BARBS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 185,346, dated December 12, 1876; application filed July 1, 1876.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN NELSON, of Oreston, in the county of Ogle and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Barbs for Wire Fences, of which the following is a specification:

The object of this invention is to furnish an improved barb for fence-wires, which shall be simple in construction, will keep its place securely upon the fence wire, and may be ap plied to new wire and to old wire that has already been stretched upon posts to form a fence.
The invention consists in a barb for fencewires, made from a short piece of wire by forming loops at the ends of a straight middle part, at right angles therewith, or nearlyso, and upon the opposite sides of the wire, leaving the points projecting in opposite directions, as hereinafter fully described.
The barb is formed of a short piece of wire made sharp at both ends. The middle part A is straight for about an inch, more or less. At both ends of the middle part A, at right angles therewith, or nearly so, and upon the opposite sides of the wire, are formed loops B, of such a size as to be readily placed upon a fence-wire, D, leaving the points 0 projecting in opposite directions, as shown in the drawings.
In applying the barb it is placed upon the fence-wire, and the loops are drawn tightly around the fence-wire by holding a hammer or other suitable article below the loop B, and striking said loop with a hammer; or the barb may be secured to the fence-wire by any suitable implement or in any convenient Way.
