liatented Sept. 1, 1931 lili" GUIDE FOR Application led April 25,
This invention relates to an improved guide for lettering, sign making or Awriting of music and the like. v
rlhe invention has for its object the provision of an improved guide including a guiding trame and cooperating teinplet parts which may be readily handled by an `unskilled person to enable such person to form letters or write music and to guide the user as to letter sp cing and also to serve as a guide for the conformation of the various letters or music characters or symbols.
By the use of the devices herein disclosed, sign lettering or music writing maybe readily effected with .the ultimate production of accurate and sightly work.
@ther objects andadvantages willbe hereinafter set forth in the accompanying'specification and claims and shown in the drawings7 which by way of illustration showwhat l now consider to be a prefeired embodiment of the invention.
Figure l is a top plan view of my improved guide.
Fig. 2 is a detail section taken on line 2-,2 of Fig. 1.V i
Fig. 3 is a letail section taken on lineof VFig. l.
Figs. 4l to 6 show the manner of using the guide for ruling certain illustrative letter examples.
Fig. 7 is a view showing various lkinds of lettering which may be made with my iniproved guide. r Y
Fi 8 shows a Supplemental guiding frame which is adapted for guiding the ruling of slant lettering.
Fig. 9 shows a templ-et construction for guiding the making of music scores. s
ln more detail the guide comprises a suitable main guiding framework with side mem- Ybers,20 and horizontal connecting pieces 2l suitably connected together in any desired way. The members 2l are provided with recessed portions 22 adapted toserve asa sliding guide way for a. displac-eable supple mental guide frame or templet generallydesignated 23. This displaceable frame has cooperating guiding parts 24. Tolguide' the user in the location of the frame 23 graduated by graduatioirs 27.
LETTERING 1928. Serial No.' 272,620.
scale marks 25 are provided upon the upper surface of the lower stepped parts of members 21. The templet frame 23 also is provided with vertical guiding rabbeted portions Y or slideways 26, which serve asa guide or slideway for certain templet parts adapted to be placed in the frame. The upper faces of the lower step of such guide ways are likewise provided with graduated scales 2,7.
Certain tem'plet parts are adaptedto vertically slide in the guides 26.l Such part-s com-y prise a rectangular plate 28provided with an oval shaped ruling guiding aperture `29, adapted to receive an open oval ring-shaped membergSO, which is` provided with a suitable flange 81 to lit the recesses or aperture 29. The plate 28 is also provided with a number of round holes 32.y -The various edgesof `frame 23 upon their upper surfaces are provided with a number lof markings preferably in the form of grooves 33., Some of lthese are horizontally disposed, others are vertically disposed and others slope as shown in Fig. l. These various grooves are marked with indicia to designate the letterornumeral or component' of such Vcharacter which may be ruled when a rule is placedin juxtaposition therewith. Another templet part` comprises a long straight member orrule 34 havt.
ing a branched handle portion 35 connected therewith. f
It will be understood that the frame 23 can be slid horizontally to any point inthe main framework 2l and its position canvbe t located and directed by the graduations 25. rlhe inner templet parts can be slid vertically to any desired verticalposition in frame 23 and the relative vertical position of such parts may'be'indicated, directed and guided The teinplet partsprovided serve for making all letters andthe manner of use is shown for certain letters in Figs. l to 6. The usual ruling pens are employed which are run along'the edges of the temp-let parts. y'In Fig. 4 the part 35i ris shown as aligned with lthe proper grooves 33 to permit the ruling of the cross-bar of the letter A. The' same templet 34; was previously employed for ruling the sloping components of the letter andl such ruling was directed by the indicia on frame or templet 23. For guiding the ruling of such sloping components the rule 34: was placed upon the sloping grooves marked for A. After a letter is ruled the spacing to the next letter may be obtained by sliding frame 23 to the sight and gauging the extent of sliding movement by the graduated scales 25.
In forming letters or numerals with oval components the oval apertured plate is used as indicated in Figs. 5 and 6. It will be understood that this plate can be slid to upper position or lower position depending upon whether upper or. lower curves yare to be formed. Inany case the vertical position ot' the plate may be gauged by the'scales 27. The round apertures 32 in the plate serve as guides in making small flleted corners as shown at 36 in Fig. 7. It will be understood that the plate 28 can also be used as a templet rule for ruling horizontal lines in which case the plate can be lifted up at the bottom ant then slid back or forth to the desired vertical point as indicated by the scales 27.
When slant lettering is to be effected the Vframe 23 can be removed from the main frame `and a frame 23a (Fig. 8) substituted in lieu thereof, which has its guideways inclined with respect to lthe horizontal guides in the main frame 20-21 instead of being vertical with respect thereto as is the case with frame 23. Y
Vhen music symbols are to be written, a music symbol templet plate 28a (Fig. 9) can be employed, which plate has in it the proper guiding apertures for the various music symbols or components thereof.
It will be understood that letters or numerals of any desired vertical height can be ruled by using the vertical height scale 27, and that smaller curved component lines may be ruled by using the plate 28 with the inner plate 30 in place. The indications graduated upon 25 can be likewise ruled across upon plates 28 and 30 as shown atV 25a and 256.
By the use of the above mentioned guides and templet parts the various letters of the alphabet, numerals or music symbols may be readily formed upon a paper sheet or card placed below the main frame. The indications and graduations serve as guides and directions for ruling' Vand the sloping graduations in particular with indicia which is related therewith, afford great aid in making letters or numerals having sloping component parts such as A, Y, W, M, N. In each case with sloping letters the ruling is to the right of the ruler 34. The ruling of such sloping components has heretofore been rquite diliicult in sign lettering and has usually required individual templets for each of a variety of letters. By the present construction the number of templet parts is greatly reduced.
It will be understood that the guiding of ruling for purely horizontal lines may be made from either the edges of members 2l or from an edge of the templet plate 28 or from the rule 34. Vertical rulings can be made under the guidance of the inner or outer edges of the frame 23 or from the edge of rule 34. Straight sloping components may be ruled under the guidance of rule 34 and its disposition for such ruling is suitably designated in each case.
The aperture 29 in plate 28 or the aperture in the oval ring 30 serve as guides for ruling oval letters or characters or oval components of characters. Vfhatever component is ruled the graduations and indicia serve to direct and guide the ruling.
Ey the term lettering as herein used I include the forming of alphabetical characters, numeral characters or musical symbols.
Various forms of letters can be ruled. Broad or narrow letters can be ruled and the breadth of such letters and proper and equal symmetry for the various letters can be obtained by merely displacing the frame 23 horizontally for certain components or displacing the templet parts to the desired vertical position. The graduations 25 and 27 permit the user to observe accurately the relative displacement of the parts either horizontally or vertically and enable uniformity of width of ruling to be readily obtained for a number of letters. rl`he graduations also facilitate the proper spacing of various letters from each other.
That I claim is:
l. A guide for lettering and the like, comprising a main frame, a supplemental frame horizontally slidable therein, said supplemental frame having angularly related guiding markings and associated character-des ignating indicia thereon to direct the locating of a rule member with respect thereto and a rule member freely movable over said main and supplemental frames to cooperate with said guiding markings.
2. A lettering guide comprising a main supporting frame, a supplemental templet frame slidable horizontally upon the main frame, templet parts slidable in the supplemental frame and a rule member adapted to freely slide upon the top of the supplemental frame, said main frame carrying graduations to indicate and guide the disposition of the supplemental frame With respect thereto, said supplemental frame also carrying graduations to guide the disposition of the templet parts which are slidable thereon and said supplemental frame also carrying angularly related guiding markings having associated character-indicating indicia to direct the disposition of the rule member with respect thereto for various characters whereby all of the characters may be ruled under the direct;
led guidance of the various frames, templet partsand rule member in various relativev positions With respect to each other.
3. A lettering guide comprising a centrally open main frame Within which lettering may be effected, a centrally open supplemental frame horizontally slidable Within and upon the main frame, a templet part slidable upon and within the supplemental frame and a rule part for ruling certain components of letters which rule part is freely movable over v the supplemental frame and freely adjustable with respect thereto, said main trame having graduations 25 thereon for directing the relative disposition of the supplemental frame With respect thereto, said supplemental frame having graduations 27 thereon for directing and guiding the relative disposition of the templet parts with respect thereto when said templet parts are used for ruling horizontal components of letter characters, said supplemental frame also provided With angularly related guiding markings 33 having character-designating indicia associated therewith for guiding the disposition of the rule part With respect thereto when the rule part is to be used for the ruling of sloping character components, said supplemental frame having Y further graduations thereon With correlated charac, ter-designating indicia :for guiding the ruling of curved letter components. Y
In testimony vvhereo` I hereto affix my signature.
